Madame de Montespan - AMBITION At Court: Madame de Montespan was the Second Mistress of Louis XIV. This video is a biography on Françoise-Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart, mme de Montespan. She was baptized on October 5, 1640 in Lussac-les-Châteaux and died on May 27, 1707 in Bourbon-l'Archambault. She also bears the name of Mademoiselle de Tonnay-Charente, but takes her most famous name from her marriage in 1663 to Louis-Henri de Pardaillan de Gondrin, which gives her the title of Marquise de Montespan. Present at the court of Versailles, she becomes the mistress of Louis XIV. Seven children were born from their relationship.

Wonderful as always. What a tragedy for the unfortunate, beautiful 17 year old girl, who caught the King's eye, made her pregnant with a baby who died, only to die herself after birth complications. Louis really was a bit of an old goat under all his sumptuous finery! I feel so fortunate that you have made these fascinating videos. I love them all.

There are no better examples of double standards that women had to live with than King Louie’s relationships. He did not even keep up a friendship with his sister in law,,,,,,which I might add would have enlightened him greatly……..mabey he was not broad minded enough to be comfortable with brilliant women,,,,,,I imagine it would have been so hard live under his thumb . Madame Montespond must wanted to throttle him ,,,😉 🤭

Thank you for your videos! About Montespan, I once read that she liked to throw money around so much, that whenever she had to go somewhere, she would use an escort of as much as 150 horses. So that whoever saw that entourage, they would always know at sight - "That's Montespan! Only her is this wasteful!" She and Louis XIV and many nobles of the time, were like the tacky noveau riche of nowadays, that suddenly got a ton of money, and now struggle to create new ways to flaunt them. I wonder if the concept of "tacky" existed at the time. It probably did, because I once read about some foreign nobleman visiting the Louvre, and making a comment like "Wherever you go - every corner, every wall, every painting, every statue - everywhere you look, there is the face of Louis XIV looking at you. Does the man not realize how laughable that is?" So the people of the time probably were thinking when they saw Montespan entourage "That poor overcompensating woman. Spending people's money like it's nothing." Both Montespan and Louis XIV remind me of modern internet moderators and community leaders, the narcissic schizofrenic sociopaths that create their own perfect world of absolutism, from which they expel anyone that says 1 wrong word. Without a shred of self awareness of how small and petty they are to outsiders, because in their own twisted minds, they are people of grandeur that matter more than anyone in the world, and get to decide anyone's fate, and nothing else exists outside their micro world. I wonder if people of the time saw Louis XIV and Montespan and other noble people that built themselves palaces of overwhelming luxury, for how pathetic they are.

I LOVE your presentations of these fascinating people who lived during fascinating times!!! THANKYOU ,I now look FORWARD to more,!!!🥰 😉 🙃 all of the King’s children of the Queen and his mistress,es are so beautiful!Compared to , any conformity of ‘ the day’from any timeline. Honestly though, the double standards that these women had endure were horrific ,,,,,,would any one say “slavery” or is that too extreme because of the age that they lived in ,,,,,,,,,, considering they were prepared for the double standard while growing up , did they consider this the norm??? I have my doubts because the mistresses tried to escape to a convent. The Queen seemed to accept the arrangements as if this was expected ?,,,,,,,,,,but these women were only human,,,,,,,,,🇨🇦 🌬 💨💨 🤍🕊🇫🇷. P.S. the artworks you use are fabulous,,,like snap shots from the past but done by the artists of the day!! The one thing brilliant about Athenais was her sense of humor. The Mortemart sisters were known to be tremendous fun. Athehais sister- Mme de Fontevrault was the cleverest and most beautiful of sisters-she later became a Nun-the Abbess of her convent. She used to take Athenais to a church in Paris to hear the sermon of a certain priest who looked like their brother, the Duc de Vivonne. The sisters would shriek with laughter at the priest who looked like their naughty brother dressed in a soutane delivering a holy sermon. Louis XIV used to say "You know, I like clever, amusing people" (le gens d' esprit)

I don't know if you are French so I will write in English 🙂 Since you seem to be interested in the relations between Louis XIV and Mme de Montespan, there is something quite funny : when they were having an argue (and they often had), Mme de Montespan used to put an end by saying to the king that, at least, in her family, there was no misalliance - referring to the Bank family of the Medicis. Nobody except her would have dared to speak that way to the king. She was really funny and fearless 😂

You are right. But there is something very, very odd that you must remember : officially, her children had no mother. Surprising, but true. On the contrary, they were officially sons and daughters of the king. When each was born, the name of the mother never appeared on the register. Only the name of the father : Louis. Of course, it was an open secret. But still : at this time, it was all about appearances. That is why, when Mme de Montespan died, her children could not officially mourn her.
