When kids come back into your home, it can be heartbreaking. Usually when a child comes back into care, they will reach out to past foster parents to see if they are available.
Here is an example of the first day, getting to know each other again, and providing comfort and care. Even though you know the child, it may still feel like it’s a new child, with trying different things and figuring out what helps support them through this difficult time.
As always, patience and compassion goes a long way as we figure out our new normal together.
Have you had a child come back into your care? Please feel free to share your experiences in the comments ⬇️💛

My daughter has real issuea with eating around people she doesn't know, or whehnshe is stressed or anxious. She has been in preschool for a few months and still isn't eating at school. I appreciate you giving your foster kids a chance to eat in private.
@CamdenKaneakaNeptunesdaughter
Maybe ask if she can eat in a classroom with a teacher who regularly does that? I used to have that option back in middle school due to the sheer amount of noise. It was a lifesaver.
@stacey738

@@CamdenKaneakaNeptunesdaughter we are working on it, we have a social worker and other professionals involved. She is only 4 and so it is a different situation from an older kid. The school is working with us to figure out what will help her be more comfortable.

I have this issue as well and ate in peace while the nurse did paperwork :) Maybe call the school nurse about that option ? Hope she adjusts ❤ It’s amazing how you word things. Not “she won’t eat” because that’s all i got. Very compassionate

I love this. We have teenagers and I'm pretty sure they only ate McDonald's or pizza the first few days but it helped having familiar, reliable foods in the midst of all the changes. Choices, even small ones, help so much in giving them control when so much of their lives are fully out of control.

Yes I agree these videos model good self-care too including even for our younger "parts" (that's a parts work term referring to "inner child" and "inner caregiver" sort of parts we all have in us).

I love how you treat the kids around food, especially allowing them to eat privately. I struggle with eating different foods and get extremely anxious when someone is asking what I want to eat or pushing food on me. I love also how you show them the food cuz that’s happened to me before where things get mixed up and it never goes well. Thanks again for another great video Laura!

What can I do for my daughter. She seems a little uneasy around food at times and I think I've totally screwed up my approach. She's 11 and it isn't too severe but this comment resonated with me and who better to ask than someone who may be going through it?
@afairyist9981
@afairyist9981 Год назад
@@flowersforthedead5182 Be compassionet and know that she isn't just being picky or dramatic. Ask her about how she feels and be open yourself and apologise for past mistakes. Her knowing you believe her about what she is going through and you won't be angry at her can go a long way. Is she ND? My own issues primarily relate to me being autistic (though I wasn't diagnosed until I was 17). As well as severe insecurity from my my mother constantly making comments about how I would eat. Primarily that I sometimes hold cuttlery weirdly, also an autistic thing. Wether she's ND or not it's very important that you validate her expirience. What exactly does she struggle with? Unless it's something that activly harms her I wouldn't recommend trying to "fix" it. And if things do need to change talk to her about it and ask for her opinions and feelings. It's really wonderful that you are asking about this 😊 I wish you both the best ❤️
@katielear6570
@katielear6570 Год назад
@@flowersforthedead5182 I agree with @Afairyist and I think you should also try to gradually expose her to more foods without forcing them on her (i.e. keeping different foods around the house; going to different restaurants etc.). I also found for myself that the tactic of "the more you eat it the more you will like it" did not work for me but I also found ways to eat stuff that I may not eat while comfortable at home but can somewhat eat a little in public. I also know for myself that I like to have a little 'treat' after eating something I may not totally like, such as eating a little chocolate or mint. I think it's great that you're also noticing how she gets uneasy around food, and if she is getting all her nutritional values then I wouldn't worry too much about her feeling uneasy as long as her "safe" foods are somewhat healthy and nutritional.
@afairyist9981
@afairyist9981 Год назад

Giving them choices is so important and respecting them is even more important. Adults often dismiss children's voices, sometimes intentional, sometimes without noticing, but if you dismiss choices and wishes, a child may grow up thinking, that it doesnt matter what they say. But it does matter.

Laura, do you have any suggestions for situations where meeting outside is not appropriate? I live in Chicago, many people don't have much outdoor space, and even if a family does, the weather often doesn't cooperate. I imagine this can be a problem for a lot of the country, whether bad weather looks like rain, dangerous heat, or dangerous smoke.😞 I'm wondering if having sensory experiences visible from the entryway could help (of course not possible for every entryway!). Like a pile of soft squishy toys for a crash pad, maybe even an indoor swing depending on the space you have and the age of the child.

I love that you are showing how to be a good foster parent. There’s a family that comes to the Y here in my area where they have a child in their care. The little boy from my understanding has gone through a lot in his sort life. His foster mom brought him in to play with us and have him start trusting other adults like us teachers. He did great but would get upset if other kids were taking toys from him and was always looking for his foster mom. This boy had his foster siblings in with him and that made it some what easier to call one of them over to help calm him down. We all felt bad for this little boy but we reassured his foster mom just to keep trying with him and to have us be another trusted adult for him.

It’s so heartbreaking to see that kids are put back in foster care multiple times. I have a question. Isn’t there a point where a child’s biological family runs out of chances? Going back and forth over and over again seems cruel. Is reunification placed ahead of the child’s best interests? I’m genuinely interested in understanding the process, not bashing bio families at all. I’m just not familiar with how it works.

As a past parent I wish I had seen this type of parenting before I began my own. Really I mostly saw my own parents who weren't like this at all (1960s & 70s, so understandable since corporal punishment was still accepted back then; authoritarian style was usual) so my models weren't the best.
