Love it! Will definitely be buying the 39mm option! I was holding off pulling the trigger on the 42mm because I was just hoping a 39mm version would be coming out. I have a larger wrist (19cm), but the historical accuracy of the 39mm makes it the obvious (imo) choice.
Thanks for the great review of this stunning watch Peter. I ordered mine from Peter at Define watches on Sunday and it arrived today. I have owned many watches but the 39mm hanhart 417ES 1954 it is truly an exceptional watch and possibly the best. I have to agree that Peter from Define watches provides the best buying experience of any dealer I have ever bought a watch from. An honest bloke who makes sure the buyer is always happy. I have purchased quite a few watches from Peter at Define watches, and I cannot rate Peter and the service he provides highly enough. The best online watch buying experience available. Thanks again for the excellent review. Kind regards, Darryl
This is why I love watching certain watch channels. Though not a fan of chronographs on the whole the enthusiasm exhibited on this channel would make a stick stuck in the ground on a sunny day seem to be a luxury item. Look forward to the next review 👍
Another cool feature of this piece reviewers seem to miss is that the width of the red mark on the bezel is the width of one minute on the minute track. Just a stunning amount of thought and engineering put into this.
I decided to treat myself to my 417 ES about 18 months ago. Waiting time was a couple of months, but it was really worth the wait. I love it. I was vaguely aware of the McQueen connection when I started checking out Hanhart, but that factor didn't influence my decision. It was Hanhart's history of being a manufacturer of great time pieces which was important. I have no connection to Hanhart other than being a happy customer.
I had the Revolution/Rake bronze 42mm 417 ES. The chronograph using a Sellita base hand wound movement enhanced by Hanhart is bullet proof and the build quality and finishing is excellent as is the bund strap. This is a watch that is punches well above its price and puts many more expensive chronographs to shame. The absence of a date complication and manual wind is a plus IMO.
I’ve had mine (flyback) for almost two months and I’ve only taken it off to wind it and to bathe. It’s my favorite watch of all time. I have the 39mm fly back custom with all black dial like the non fly back version shown here by Peter Kotsa. Made by Hanhart for Peter Petzold at Define. My wrist is 7.6” and the 39mm is perfect. Pure class. While it is the column wheel flyback chrono it doesn’t say flyback on the dial…just like the originals didn’t. I heard Hanhart will be making this custom non panda fly back version available to the general public eventually. EDIT: I love this watch not because of Steve McQueen, but because 1- it’s simply a beautiful watch, and 2- it’s the/a Bundeswehr watch. You can find this watch, and many others, in the standard reference work on German Military watches in the book: Militäruhren. Die Uhren der deutschen Streitkräfte 1870 bis 1990 - Konrad Knirim Also, a new English version is by the title: German Timepieces: 150 years watches and clocks of German Forces by the same author.
Awesome video, stunning watch. There is a reason why Steve worn this watch and the best part, he was not paid to wear it. It’s an absolute watch, definitely a keeper.
Love my Hanhart MK I. And the 417 is on my list. Just visited the company in Gütenberg in the Black Forest for a factory tour and tried the 39 mm on the wrist. Fits amazing. There is so much history in this brand and the people from Hanhart took all the time for me. They are pessioned. Small company with a big history. I love it.
Great looking watch 👍 I'm a big fan of Steve McQueen myself I was born in the 50s 1953 grew up watching his movies when i was young the Blob then-Bullet The magnificent 7- Papillon -The Thomas crown affair . I wanted to be him , Now i can at least wear a watch like his !
Really interesting seeing a 39 and 42 of the same watch side by side, it's amazing that a measly 3 mm makes so big a difference. Most of my watches are 44 and 45 mm divers, that's my comfort zone. Then I saw a 40 mm diver that I really liked and it works perfectly fine on my wrist. But the 38 mm watch I got recently just looks too small for me, I don't wear it much. As for the Hanhart's in this video I think the bund strap plays a trick, the 42 seems too big for the strap, while the strap helps the 39 look slightly bigger. The 42 should be a no brainer for my preferences but the 39 looks a bit leaner..
Have the TGV limited 39. It is very similar but has a red chrono reset pusher. Wish it had the red second markings on the dial that some 42’s have. But it’s great.
@@PeterKotsa I really did. The only thing I'm wondering about is the lume. You say that both versions use C3 SuperLuminova, but it looks like the shading is different? The 42mm looks more cream-colored. Did they use old-radium for that model? The difference is very clear at 8:18.
I was never a fan of Divers or Chronograph's yet in a matter of days I have found myself being really drawn to a Sinn Diver and now I have a similar appreciation of this Hanhart Chronograph, things are changing Peter, keep up the good work...stay safe
Amazing I can see why they chose you to highlight this Timepiece a great combination of great photography and your unbiased honest opinions it's always entertaining 👍 E
Thank you kindly Michael, appreciate the feedback To be honest, I actually wanted to handle these myself, so I tried my best to contain my excitement and be neutral 😊
The 39 speaks to me from the front but it looks so thicc... It looks thicker than the 11ish mm you mention. The 42 looks a little more proportional to the thickness. I'd love to see each on my wrist... It's a beautifully simple and clean dial. Very legible, very nice. Thanks for bringing it into the light!
Pretty cool. As u may know, TGV had a collaboration with Hahart to make a special limited edition version of this called the 417 ES Red Lion. The only thing different I could visually see is the red reset chronograph pusher, which is a nice touch. Other than that, not sure there's really much else different than that from this version. Very cool watch. I love me some excellent value and designed chronographs. Considering where this one sits in the market, it's quite a good one if you're in the market for this particular chronograph design with some great heritage and associations.
Hanhart has some great pilot watches, including this one. I wasn't aware of the Steve McQueen connection, great to know! I mir stly love the ones with a "lipstick" pusher due to the story behind it! Thanks!
I’m happy to say Peter I managed to secure one a couple of weeks ago! 😅 As you’re also a mad Steve McQueen NUT like me, you’d be aware, as most fans of Steve’s penchant for motorcycles, Triumph in particular & enduro riding/racing. Watch his movie “On Any Sunday”!🤤😍I’m not sure like yourself when Steve acquired his Hanhart but he did wear it in 1964 in East Germany in the ISDT, or International Six Days Trial, representing the USA. As mentioned, he chose the watch & wore it mostly during his life, contrary to his association with Rolex submariner or the Heuer Monaco. Apparently the watch at some point just disappeared. Imagine getting hold of that Grail?😱Anyway mate I’m waiting with bated breath for mine!🙏🏻👍🏼😎
Enjoy it mate. I'm envious! I'm saving for mine as of now! (I just received a pretty schmick UG Polerouter on Thursday - that was was fairly substantial purchase for me). I've wanted a Hanhart for *years* but always thought the sub dials were a little off on the 42mm. I was stoked to hear about the 39mm release. On Any Sunday is cracking film, hey? Mcqueen was a freak; his ability in the saddle *and* behind the wheel - as well as being one of the actors/icons of his generation? Like many men who grew up rough, he was no saint - but obviously had a good heart judging by his charity work etc. All this McQueen talk, think I might watch The Getaway tomorrow! 😁
I got mine a couple of weeks ago too. I also ordered the Pioneer short strap and it sits much lower on the wrist compared to the bund strap and still looks great.
The Pioneer Preventor 9 is on my wish list but I like the 39mm diameter 46mm lug to lug so much better on this. Too bad they didnt make it with the cathedral hands that the PP9 has. I love the design and size just not the hands. I really wish they would make the PP9 in a 38/ 39 with the 46mm lug to lug. These watches are still beautiful works of art and I love the handwind movements!
Beautiful watches my friend. One of the best pilot watches I have seen. I will be looking to add the 39mm to my collection after I get a Tudor FXD. Great video as usual 😊
Going to finally order the 417ES 39mm, my Mother is going to Germany next month and I'm going to have it shipped to her. I've lusted for the 417ES for years and it'll go nicely with my Bullitt Benrus!
Hanhart us at the top of my want list. I am still kicking myself that I did not buy the 39mm Red Lion, limited to 150 pieces. I was actually on their site when it was released and I was totally overwhelmed by the moment. Of course, it sold out in minutes.
@@PeterKotsa Yeah, it hurts. People always say that one shouldn’t ‘impulse buy’, but I guess that is not always true. Thanks for the great comparison video, by the way. It helped clarify that the 39mm is the way for me to go, despite my 19cm wrist.
Peter, you have quite the unique reviews channel. So beautifully brought together. Instant subscriber. Looking forward to even more reviews on brands and histories unbeknownst to me.
I've lusted after this one since I saw it on TGV's channel and I would pick the 39mm, no doubt about it. 39mm chronos are, to me, the ideal size. Yes, they look "small" on my 7" wrist, there is plenty of skin visible beyond the lugs but I don't care, it is what I like. And the manual winding - that's the whole idea, part of the charm. Makes living with the watch a very tactile experience. Not too sure about the bund though, I haven't liked any I've tried. I'd probably take that part off and wear it as a regular strap.
Said in the past too, this is one of the very few chronos i could get. That says a lot, if you know me and my relation with... chronos, in general (and the true meaning of Chronos in Greek...!). I've beat them... so far... 😋 Cheers Peter, be well mate.
Nice review Pete and nice piece. The first watch to excite me in a while. It’s a ripper. The only negative for me is the 13.5 plus the bund will make it sit a little too proud to slide under a cuff. Nice weekend watch for sure.
Gotta be the 39mm alovely watch. I need to try a watch on a bund strap on day. Thank you for a wonderful 10mins of escape Peter. I wonder if the 39mm actually makes it back.....
I know the 39 is the same size as McQueen's. But does it have the same thickness? Looks pretty tall, and I wonder if Steve McQueen's original is that way (I know vintage watches tend to be thinner than their modern counterparts)
Just exactly the video I was looking for ....a comparison between the 39mm and 42mm. Thanks Peter. Would like to see a video of the pioneer one in blue.
Been deliberating on this watch for 18 months or more. Then the 39MM came out and whilst I like bigger watches, I also like 'classics' to be as original or true as possible. So the 39mm was swaying, but now seeing one important points it's made up my mind. The 39mm is 20mm lug width, not the strap option killing 21mm of the 42. I will have to wait longer for the 39mm though.
Of all the loans for review you’ve shared on your channel, I imagine this 39mm beauty was one of the most difficult to return 😉 The McQueen connection, for me, is much cooler than say, a Newman, but that’s just me. I also have a soft spot for the green Mustang GT that McQueen drove into cinematic history. Imagine that pairing. Touring the hills of San Francisco in a Bullitt Mustang GT, wearing the 39mm Hanhart. One can dream.
I’m already regretting putting the watch back in a post box yesterday 😢😢😂 I think maybe in the near future I will re visit this watch 👍 Cheers brother 🙏
If you like this, but want a more interesting chronograph and a step up in quality, check out the Girard Perregaux 2598 in black. No longer produced, but available pre-owned.
Cheers Peter. Been keeping my eye on Hanhart for a while and the rumours of the 39mm have circulated for a couple of years. Funnily enough I was looking at their website just yesterday. It said Not Available for both models. So the problem is availability.
Haha, do any of us need another? Mate if we could answer that question honestly I'd have a lot more money in the bank and only one watch on my wrist, thats not gonna happen anytime soon 😂😂 Cheers Mal, stay well mate
That's my next purchase right there Pete. I reckon the sub-reg layout on the 42mm is a little...off. I was hoping for a 39mm. It's my understanding that McQueen got his during the filming of the Great Escape in Germany. Mate, that's gotta be the one to replace the Monaco, yeah?
That makes sense actually. He wore the it in 1964 in the ISDT racing enduro in East Germany! In The Great Escape he wore a Rolex Oyster Speedking. Obviously the 1954 Hanhart wasn’t around in WW2!🤣
I would like to say yes Anthony, but am in two minds unfortunately. I have a rule, one watch in, one watch out. In my previous video you saw that I returned the Monaco and purchased an Omega..so now I am stuck between a rock and a hard pace to keep the wife happy and not break my golden rule 😊😂
@@andrewd7586 I wonder if anyone knows where his one is? It could still be in the family I guess? Out of the ~ 1K made a number had white dials for medicos and/or navy personal + 500 were in Stainless (417ES) and 500 were chromed base metal (417). McQueens was an ES because it had the 2 lines of script above the 6 which was only on the Steel variants... That's gotta mean there's ꜰ☠︎︎☠︎︎ᴋ ᴀʟʟ original ES's out there. How would it be if someone had *His* Hanhart sitting in a drawer somewhere and didn't know it?
Hi, I wish Hanhart would have released the 39mm before the 42mm! I didn’t understand their explanation about a more modern re.issue of the 417es. As you said - everyone was waiting for a true re.issue of this watch! I’m afraid Hanhart isn’t going to swap my 42 for the 39… 😔 Best regards, Claus
Thanks for video. Wonderful looking watch. I’m apprehensive due to the yellowish lume. I’m not a fan of the vintage look. This model doesn’t appear to go that far but there’s no way to see one in person. Any owners care to share their thoughts on the lume color? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
I like it, i just wish It was a different color. I have enough black in my collection and it may be just my style of collecting watches, but I'm trying to have color variety. Sadly most vintage inspired / reissued watches are black.
Look i love watches and have a few , but 39mm is for the ladies only , please dont get me wrong , i love your channel and a few others . My wife agrees , she wears a 43mm watch min , sorry im on a rant , lovely watch , lovely channel , take care
All good, no offence taken about the smaller watch. Personally I like watches from 44mm down to 38mm. I think if your comfortable with a size that suits your wrist, then who am I to tell you what is right or wrong 🙏 As for ranting, fell free to express how you honestly feel 👍 Cheers
Like this watch a lot. Finally review of 39 mm version & compsrison with 42 on youtube. Thanks for review. Just wondering what is your favorite MсQueen movie?
The 42mm all the way for me as I prefer the extra real estate. Nice touch with the extra shots at the end but where was the Oompah music to go with it?
