The terms “supper” and “dinner” can be used pretty interchangeably, but “dinner” is typically used more often. Regardless, if someone says one or the other, most people will know they’re referring to the last meal of the day. But we came across some shocking news: they’re not the same thing after all-and if your grandparents or parents used the term “supper,” there’s a good chance your ancestors were farmers. ♥
I say supper most of the time. My maternal grandmother was raised on a farm. My father was raised on a farm until he moved into town as a teen. So I guess I get supper from both sides of the family.
I looked this up once because it's always been dinner for me and I went to school in the Midwest and some people are breakfast, lunch, dinner, others had breakfast, lunch, supper, and still others had breakfast, dinner, supper. Super confusing when someone says to come over for dinner and you are told last-minute that is the meal in the middle of the day. So, after looking it up ... Dinner is the largest meal of the day--in many farming communities, this is in the middle of the day.
awwwww. I love that Todd has a soft heart. That's the mark of a good man. Dinner/Supper. Call it what you want. I just don't want to be late for it. :)
Todd I am just like you, I too cried when Frosty went away and I don’t like movies where the animals get killed. Your sausage dinner looked really good.
Rachael, you are a very lucky lady to have a man that takes such good care of animals and that has a tender heart. I cried at Frosty too. From Minnesota, supper for sure. Lunch was a sandwich but dinner was fancy lunch after church.
Love these videos. Loved watching Todd's face before he tasted the soup. Todd, never apologize or feel bad about being sensitive. It's great that you have the love in your heart for the animals and other things. We need more guys like that and that aren't afraid or ashamed to shed a tear. I know you already know it Rachel, but you got a good man there. Hope your shoulder won't cause you too many issues.
No doubt !! My husband and I are the same way and I always tell him "It takes a real man to cry". We won't watch anything either that involves animals, elderly or children being hurt or abused. I also hope your shoulder heals soon, if not please make sure you go get it checked.
I didn’t know they were any different. I am from Michigan and say “supper”. My ancestors were farmers. You guys really should do a cookbook! I would love most of your recipes! ❤️
We say Supper, we had Sunday Dinner, at lunch time at my grandparents house, they were farmers. I'm with you Todd, I do not watch anything that is abusive to anyone. I know it is out there but no need to go look for it. But, mostly, I just watch gardening, canning, self-sustainable types of videos. Rachel, I used to work for an automotive parts manufacturing plant and come August and September, things got crazy when the new cars came out. God Bless and stay safe. EDIT: Central Kentucky
Yes, my ancestors were farmers and yes my parents used ‘dinner’ as the noon meal and ‘supper’ as the evening meal. I rarely, if ever, use the term ‘supper’ anymore. Now it’s lunch’ for the noon meal and ‘dinner’ as the evening meal. Guess I ended the tradition.
We use "dinner" in California. However, my maternal grandparents were from Kentucky and Oklahoma and both used "supper" for the evening meal and "dinner" for what we now usually call "lunch." They did that even decades after moving to California. Great video and thank you for sharing with lucky us!
I always thought supper was early dinner. Like, you leave the field and immediately eat supper and then eat dinner just before bed? Family is also from OK. Sincerely, what the heck is thanksgiving then? Dinner, lunch or supper? 🤷🏼♀️
I love that Todd is sharing his sensitivity. My husband is also a rugged, masculine man and does the same thing! Thanks for sharing your meals! I love that you’re showing what you do with all your preserved foods. I think that is missing in a lot of channels. God bless ya!
Bang the jar upside down on counter and will open so easy! Yes, it does suck getting old. My shoulders are always aching. Take muscle relaxant for it just to have some peace. Love your dinner/suppers ! Giving me ideas.
I'm 31 now and growing up it was supper in Texas. However, we moved to California when I started middle school and we called it dinner. Nowadays I say dinner here in Arizona, but if I go home to Texas I say supper on Sunday with my family. I don't think it matters what we call it as long as the table is set and grandma isn't waiting. Thank you for another AMAZING video!! I can't wait to spend this year following your garden experience this year since it's my first time doing one myself.
Todd's reaction to the carrot soup is the same my husband would have too. My hubby would have his eyes wide open if I said no meat too and, 2-3 hours later, he'd be looking for some meat to eat thinking he is about to starve. He also doesn't think much of "soup" as a meal. I love soup and make soup about every week of some kind. Everything looked wonderful for your dinners. Also, it is always supper 'round these parts and, yes, my grandparents were farmers :)
A little of both. Supper is for weekdays and when we have lunches. Dinner is more formal, indicating more prep time, more offerings and typically is used to describe the after-church meal on Sundays.
In the North of England we call our evening meal 'tea' and our lunch is 'dinner'- as in 'breakfast, dinner and tea' - Supper would be classed as a small meal later in the evening, usually after having a large meal at lunch time and skipping a main evening meal. That being said, dinner, supper and tea can all be used interchangeably for an evening meal and lunch is also used for the mid day meal.
Here (Deep East Texas) there is breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I do hear some people say supper. Hey Todd, I think before all is said and done, you will enjoy spicy food! The more you eat, the more you become accustomed to the spice and can eat. In the past you would say things were a bit too spicy but I haven't heard that in a while...
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest saying supper…. Both parents from the country in New York… but now living in Texas we actually say both dinner or supper and they mean the same meal…. The evening meal…. Anyway i love watching and listening to y’all on your week and your meals together. Thank you for sharing your world with us.
Growing up in New Zealand we called the evening meal dinner and hot chocolate and cookies or snack before bed was called supper. Love your new glasses Rachel, very pretty

My Daddy used to say "This getting old thing isn't all it's cracked up to be... but it sure beats the alternative". Not sure how original this comment was, but it resonates with me these day as I'm heading to 60 in December. Great video you two. Hugs, Penny Sue
You could always through in ground turkey or sausage or some chicken into the carrot soup. I'm with you Todd on watching "stuff" where animals or little kids get hurt. Never heard of picklesmash. Thanks for sharing. God bless.
Awww, Todd, I am he same, I was raised on a farm, we raised Chickens, hogs, sheep, corn & soybeans. I got all the extra or runts of everything, including calves from my Uncle (if there were twins and Mom only took care of one etc) Dad wouldn’t get me a pony, so I rode my pigs and my calves. One of my calves, Jackson, rode just like a pony.I rode him to my Grandmas and some cousins that lived within 3 miles. Dad was always trying to teach me to “toughen up” On the farm, you can’t keep things that cost you money, you need to make money (but HE WAS the biggest softy too!) Anything hurting animal or kids, I can’t watch to this day. And I have rescued over 400 dogs and over 500 cats, including some chickens, goats & sheep. When married, I goats & all my own critters, horses included and everything dies of old age here. We are down to 6 dogs, 30 cats, 1 ram, now and I try to tell my husband No, I want to raise our own meat now, I THINK I can (I’m 63 now) but he doesn’t believe me, and maybe he is right🤣 I figure I will die broke, but with tons of love & memories of all our critters. God Bless you both♥️ Lori from Iowa🌽
Hi Rachel & Todd. I say dinner. Because dinner is the one meal my son always asks of me every day. Tonight, I am making beef strips, rice and a little salad for me. God Bless you and Todd. Stay safe and stay healthy. Maria. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕😇😇😇😇😇😇
Good evening! Tuna casserole was a staple when are kids were growing up. We have not had it for a long time, I may have to fix it this week. My husband does not like vegan foods either, he’s a meat and potatoes guy. Thank you for letting us into your world. You are a great couple to watch and learn from, not just homesteading stuff. Have a great week.
I knew just what Todd was making when I saw those peas and tuna cans! Yummy! I haven't had Tuna Casserole in ages! We call it supper when it's just family and dinner when it's more formal...no idea why! 😂
Rachael you sound like you are eating at a restaurant, your hubby done good. You both are so bless to have each other. We getting lots of rain for a few days. Got to try your recipe. And we still call it Supper. 😉😍🥰✝️💟
We say supper because my grandparents use to call lunch dinner and sometimes supper dinner also lol. So there's really no mistaking that supper is the last big meal of the day. And yes my ancestors were farmers 🚜.
It's very easy to integrate new chickens. Put the new ones in a pen that is only separated with chicken wire. They need to see each other. Feed them both at the chicken wire. Keep them separately like this for at least 2 weeks. After 2 weeks remove the wire. Done this for years and works extremely well.
when i first got married, i made a spaghetti marinara and salad for dinner. myhusband looked at me with that Where’s the beef?! look. he went out at 10pm and got a burger at a drive thru restaurant lol
Tuna casserole i bake and add salt and vinegar crushed potato chips on top. Its a game changer. Omit the bread crumbs and cheese. To Australians, dinner is the hot meal usually at night. So we have breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Supper here. The only time we used "dinner" was for Sunday noon meal, the biggest meal of the week. Otherwise, noon meal was lunch. We didn't farm, but grandparents did.
I'm in the UK where there's a bit of a north/south divide. In the north it would be breakfast, dinner and tea. In the south it's generally breakfast lunch and dinner. Some in the south would call dinner or tea, supper but in the north supper is a bedtime snack.
That pasta looked amazing! I’m making tuna casserole this week. I put onions and celery in mine, and then I top it with a layer of pepper jack cheese. Sooo good!
Rachel. I love the soup recipe and all I could think about was how wonderful your braised goat meat would be in this recipe. Add warm Naan bread and what a beautifully transformed soup. Ty for this show. Love it.
It decided to snow today, here in Oregon. Hahahaha.. It was 83 degrees 3 days ago! I was so hoping to be able to put up my winter garb. Supposed to snow on and off and lots of rain for the next 2 weeks!!!
Our family always called it supper on weeknights, and it was served around 5 pm. On Sunday it was called Dinner and served around 2 pm. More of a fancy meal, with a special dessert. During the week it was mostly fruit or pudding. No matter what though it was always homemade! Yep, my mother was a canner and also made bread. I don't ever remember having store bought bread, unless I was at someone's house. From Western, N.Y., Mother grew up in Pa. though. Always love your cooking. Keep up the good work, it can't be easy to film all of the things you do. It takes more time to film, and oh the editing! Thank you for taking all the time to do it.
My family and my husband's family use the term "dinner" for the mid-day meal and "supper" for the last meal of the day. My ancestors were farmers, and so are we lol. Blessings!
Growing up between Charleston and Columbia SC I said dinner and supper for noon and then evening meals. Still do when I am there. In Columbia it is lunch and dinner.
When my wife and I got married in 1979 she knew little about cooking and she didnt really like to cook. One thing she could make was tuna noodle casserole and as a new hubby I ate it 2 to 3 times a week for months until I said I need to teach you how to cook other meals like meatballs and sauce and lasagna. She told me you cook much better so I clean up and prep but you take over ths cooking. I loved to cook and I grew up poor so I could make a meal from little. My Mom always told me if you keep carrots, onions potatoes and celery you can make a meal with little meat or beans for protien. She was adopted my Italian immigrants that were very poor in Italy so we could make cheap meals with little ingredients. That soup reminded me of pasta Fagioli beans and pasta. We are it alot as kids it was cheap and filled the belly. With a loaf of bread, day old preferably, I still love this meal to this day !!!
Supper. If the kids are coming or if friends are joining us we call it a supper party. We're out of Southern Louisiana and we're in central Arkansas now. I love your videos!
I’m from Oregon, from a long line of farmers (dairy (brown Swiss) and black Angus specifically) ….. we say “Supper”….. and “Dinner” would mean the lunch time meal…. my husbands family says “Dinner” for the evening meal…. So our grown children say both ❤️💕🙏🏼 Just like my family says “drain board” (for counter top) and my husband says “counter top”….. so my children also say both for that as well…. There are a few more that I can think of…. But I’ll stop there ! 🤪 Much Love to all 💕❤️🙏🏼
Hey yawl, we have the same stove! LOL We really enjoy watching yawl cook. I need to start filming what we cook more often, just so tired after work and the end of the day. Our new GoPro 10 is amazing and we are now using Adobe to edit. Love the channel and enjoy watching yawl cook. God Bless, Mike
My grandparents in Detroit (from WV originally though!) did say supper. Here between Baltimore and DC, I’d call it supper if it’s an early “dinner”, especially a bigger, sit down meal with family. Otherwise, it’s dinner for us!
My husband is from Maryland and they call that red pepper stuff hots. It’s common there on deep fried beef dogs that are then made into chili dogs with hits on it. It might be good on your favorite chili dogs
In the South the noon meal is dinner and the evening meal is supper. Never new them to be called anything different till I went to school with a northern transplant who constantly corrected my use of dinner and supper.
