Your story about cooking for him was very sweet. I’ve been watching y’all for about a year now but I had no idea he was a trained chef. Some people are just natural born cooks.
I cook for my family and friends but it is so nice when I DON’T have to cook. Even if it’s a PBJ sandwich, it’s nice to be served instead of serving all the time. So I believe he really did love and appreciate those lunches cause when he speaks of chicken salad and bags of grapes so sweetly you know it was the thought as much as the food.
Everything looked amazing! Rachael, you don't give yourself enough credit. I think your meals look amazing! As do Todds. Honestly, I've been inspired by both of you for a lot of dishes I've made. Could be that I think our styles are similar, in that we aren't afraid to at least TRY something. A little of this and a dab of that goes a long way in the kitchen. Lol And please forgive me if I misspelled your name. Thank you both for being willing to share your knowledge and ideas, you're a beautiful couple and I appreciate all you do. God bless you both. ~Lisa
I have the midwinter-cabin fever - gardening withdrawal blues and you guys keep me going. You know when you just can't come up with any ideas of what to make for dinner? Well I'm there right now. I appreciate your dinner videos to help get me started again.
Thanks for taking the time to share your meals with us this week. Your salsa verde looks so lovely, that is on my list for this harvest season. Hope your week is wonderful. Take care.
Our meals around here are kind of ho-hum sometimes and I love watching these because they give me some ideas I may not use them all but just the germ of a thought in my head helps sometimes
I've been making homemade kefir for a few years now. I love it. And it is such a good thing to have on hand! I make a few different recipes with it. My two favorites are making ranch with it (substitute kefir for buttermilk) and making fruit yogurt.
Just saw a video by Grounded Haven Homestead Feb pantry challenge 2…..she takes the Cowboy candy juice and turns it into a BBQ sauce. My pantry challenge this week has been dehydrating veggies, chicken and ground hamburger….then vacuum sealing them and putting the meats back into the freezer…just for safety and they take so little storage this way…. I’ve taken bags of frozen veggies dehydrated them and combined some into soup mixes. Some I put Mac noodles in the mason jar with the veggies and vac sealed them…..it was so nice to cook a chuck roast in the instant pot then after it released I added bone broth and dehydrated veggies and your potato with peppers and onions that you showed on how to freeze without blanching…😘👏👏👏…thank you Rachel….so handy especially now that I am suffering carpal tunnel and a locked rotary cuff….I can’t peel potatoes very well….. I even baked banana bread in my bread machine so I didn’t have to carry a mixer to the counter…..I need to use some bananas up, lol bought a bunch when they were cheap now they are $ .65 lb……getting ready for summer outside chores and have prepped for when I don’t feel like cooking when coming in…I’m not blessed with a smoochy chef in my kitchen to help…😂 You haven’t gone to the cabin lately……it’d be hard for me to stay home on the weekends if I had a cabin…especially these few warm days we’ve had here in Ohio….with that note I’ve been dehydrating dinners to take camping that way I don’t have to worry about no room in the cooler or the small fridge…..I love the silence of the woods after a snowfall and the beauty……the ice storm we had had a beautiful coating of ice on all our trees and the sun made them glisten likes colored crystals. Sooo majestic…… I look forward to your videos ….home made bread and beef soup tonight ….. Have you ever froze your homemade bread or rolls. I put a paper towel around the loaf then seal mine and I’ve frozen the unbaked rolls….great for cold Sunday mornings with you frozen potato recipe and sausage gravy
Love watching and listening to your videos, gives me some great ideas and different meals. Down here in Louisiana we cook our steaks in a iron skillet, brown good on both sides and put in a broiler in my stove, so yummy, cut big rings of onions an put on the side of the meat right before going in the oven. Thank you both for sharing !!! ✝️💟
Hey y'all. I know it's too late to help now, but the next time you burn yourself, immediately coat the burn in plain yellow mustard. I know it sounds weird, but I promise it will take the burn out. Let the mustard dry completely and make sure it's a heavy coating. I have done this when I've spilled boiling water on my hand and there wasn't even a red spot left. Wash it off after the mustard is dry and cracked. It really works! Pam in South Carolina
I was watching this video today and I couldn’t believe Todd burnt his hand on the handle of the frying pan, I did the EXACT same thing last night!! I normally always place an oven mitt on the handle of anything hot and a simple slip of concentration and I forgot this vital step, and I am dearly paying the price! I’ve got blisters forming today, and the pain (although much better now) was next level last night! I hope you are ok Todd, that will teach us...until next time! 😩😊
I do not know how I haven't stumbled upon your videos before! Today an onion video came up from 2020 and I was intrigued and excited about what I learned. I looked at your video line up and holy moly, you have a lot to offer in experienced education. I look forward to going over your history and I shun youtube for denying me your feeds for this long!!! SHAME youtube! Seriously. Anyway. Happy homesteading!
I enjoy these videos. It inspires me to cook for two. It's just me and my elderly aunt for the most part. My husband is a truck driver so he's gone most of the time. I also enjoy your canning videos very much. Thank you for sharing your lives.
Some of the concern is due to those who are relying on the store etc and they see the shortages a d price hikes. It may be some of their own personal feelings being shared and honestly I wouldn't make a final decision on a year off until the end of that year/ season. This is my feelings and I am not you or them.ice watched your channel long enough to know you got this and I wish I could say the same with a garden anyway. I mam still learning how to purposely grow food rather than a hobby. I am so fortunate to have several Amish farm markets not too far from me that I can utilize to help me stock up on healthy fresh food and preserve. To Hanks for sharing you what's for dinner everything looks yummy and it's very inspiring.
I absolutely love your dinner videos! I love homesteading content even though I’m not a homesteader, but the dinner videos are very accessible for me and it’s nice to see how everything gets used day to day. 🥰
For minor / medium burns I use Foile. It is almost miraculous. It stops the burning very quickly and is not tender later on. Try it, you will like it. Love your channel.
So so glad you tube recommended your channel! You're both such a delight to watch and learn from. And omg that shrimp dinner and then the steak! Just the way we like it here. Wish we had taste-a-vision!
I buy mushrooms when they are on sale and I dehydrate them and make mushroom powder and it's delicious. I add to burgers, soups, etc...so good 😊 love the ideas and inspiration from you 2...
Hello Rachel &Todd. I love it when the two of you working together in the Kitchen. I am looking forward to seeing your jello making . Rachel, you are awesome and loved by all your viewers. God Bless you Rachel & Todd. Take care. Maria. 😇😇😇😇😇😇😇❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍👍💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Simple Living Alaska makes me want to figure out kefir grains and kefir cheese and whatnot, because it always looks so amazing when they utilize it. Hope you figure it out and I will be so excited to watch that video in the future, when you do! You guys are so sweet for and to each other. It's awesome to see!
What a fabulous story of you cooking for him! Y'all were both sweet! Oh my that first dish is to die for! The 2nd looks good too! I'm not a steak person, but it looks good, as well as the chili. Stay blessed!
Andrea is a jewel and a plethora of information!!! We live a town away from VWFamilyFarm! I have made kefir before and I love it. I always hated throwing away my grains when they multiplied though!!! You guys are the best!!
I'm addicted to your videos! The dynamic of you both, the style of videos, your sense of humor, the quality of content, and the genuineness of you guys! I've been watching your old and new videos for weeks. I'm a mama, homeschooler, and I work full time during the night. When I get off work I watch your videos while I clean or eat dinner and the kids and baby are asleep. ❤️ I'm learning so much. We may be buying our very humble and small homestead in a few months and I am so excited. You guys inspire me so much. Thank you!
Hi Rachael and Todd I love seeing you can and cook especially with your homegrown pantry food you canned. Have a great evening God Bless you and your family from a U Tube viewer in Toronto Ontario Canada
Love to watch your videos especially the cooking ones! So fun! You guys cook a good variety of things where I really don’t! It’s just mainly the same things I’ve cooked forever! So you really inspire me! Rachel, I think you cook really good but you really do an awesome job with all your canning and preserving skills! Great job to you both! 😊
New to the channel… I was wondering how he knew how to cook so well! That’s awesome. My husband knows how to cook also…. Something about a man that can cook! Thank you for sharing! I will share with my husband as some of these are new to us!
I actually wondered a time or two about the cooking skills I was seeing 😉. You do a great job too Rachel! I’m looking forward to seeing the video with your chili base.
Started watching your channel about 1month ago, love it! ❤ The way you live your life, I grew up lucky enough to live not only with my Mom, Dad, 2 sisters and a brother, but my grandmother and grandfather. They where the original homesteaders, lived on a farm, did everything. They did move off the farm at a point, built the house that their daughter added on to when she got married to my Dad, and had 4 kids. Your channel reminds me of my childhood, grandma did all the stuff, canning, baking everthing from scratch. I still do some baking and cooking the way that she taught me. If your wondering about any German recipes, just ask, I may know it,
So glad I found you guys. I love it that you watch Eric & Ariel @ Simple living Alaska. Like them your love for each other shines through. I started watching you guys last November. While I no longer live in Michigan both my husband and I were born & raised in Northern Lower Michigan. We still have lots of family there and visit at least once a year. We live in Nevada now but my love for gardening & canning continues. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
I just love mondays now because I get a new video from you guys! Love seeing all the things you’re making and doing all week. It makes me feel like part of the family 😁
Loved the story of you cooking for Todd Rachel then he cooked for you and blew you away. Everything this week looked amazing. I think my fav was the Shrimp Meal, that looked amazing. Thanks for sharing!
love all your stuff.. the cooking, the canning, especially the garden episodes. keep it all coming. Its nice to see you guys sitting down and sharing e meal together too. I think its the most important thing in my day when I sit down with my husband for dinner each night..
I love making cheese and yogurt the most from our milk kefir ....and my husband loves blueberry/ banana kefir smoothies for breakfast. I normally have 4 quarts on the go at a time....staggered so we never do without. I freeze my extra grains.
OMG! People that actually eat a whole steak each! Lol! All these shows on food network try to feed 6 people with like 2 steaks! Ridiculous, I’m a grown woman, give me my whole steak!!!! Love your videos!
Sour cream is so easy! Never go without ever again. Heavy cream in a quart jar with 2 big dollops of plain yogurt. Put lid on and wrap in a towel. Put in oven with oven light on....the longer it sits the more sour it becomes. Finish in fridge to thick up. I usually do this before bed time and then take it out late morning. We enjoy it so much more than store bought. It works with my homemade yogurt too. So 2 jars are always reserved to make more yogurt and a batch of sour cream
Rachel after I watched your video on canning the orange juice, out of curiosity, I canned one jar as a test. Like you ,I also heard others say the taste was bitter. I waited a week then tasted it. It tasted exactly the same as when I canned it. Thank You for the inspiration.
I think that red shelf came from home depot. I almost bought the same one but we don't have space. 😂 I love it! I make a shrimp pesto pizza that is sooo good! It's fun to watch you all BAM! Take it up a notch. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the pantry inventory video too!
You’ve sparked my interest in kefir.... 🧐 I have made kombucha several times from scratch and love it, but never jumped in the kefir bandwagon. But you said cheese and sour cream! 👍
Don't fret you can make Kefir. Kefir grains are hardy and very forgiving. It will take a couple of days to re-hydrate the grains. When I got mine I would strain the grains daily using a nylon mesh strainer and wooden spoon to stir with. After they are hydrated, just strain the grains out and put into a clean jar and add your milk. Do this daily, but if you need a break from making Kefir, just strain out the grains and put into a jar of fresh milk, then store in the fridge. They will keep for several months. Hopefully they sent you instructions to help you move along on your Kefir journey. To me the Kefir taste kind of like buttermilk. Some folks like to give Kefir a second ferment butI have not done that because I like it just the way it is. Thanks and take care, God Bless.
I binge watched you all day long today. Thank you for teaching us without all the marketing. It is so distracting sometimes. I thank you for all the time and effort you put into your vlogs. Not a one goes unappreciated by this old mare. You are the canning superwoman in my book. I continue to grow in knowledge the more I watch you.
Just tried the green Verde enchilada bake tonight! I tweaked it like you and used soy curls since I have shellfish allergy. Hubby hies "write this down its a keeper!" :)
I've been watching your channel a couple years now and the cooking has quickly become a huge favorite, my daughter and I try and guess what's in those jars. 😂 I would love some of your recipes and I bet I'm not the only one. Thanks for sharing with us and being so fun to watch. ❤
So funny, I was watching Three Rivers Homestead and stepped out of the room and this video came up on my autoplay. I came back and knew it was your channel by the kitchen and thought "Oh I wonder what Rachel's got going on" I need to get off RU-vid haha! Everything looks delicious.
Ha. A number of years ago we were regulars at a restaurant and the chef became our friend. He often lamented no one would cook for him! So I said, come on over, Kenny, we'll cook for you! So the 1st time he came by himself and was pleased. 2nd time (yes!) he brought the family. That one was an Indian feast with like 7 dishes. He was pleased again. Just put yourself into the service of the ingredients and you can't go wrong, Rachel 🙂 PS: he brought the good wine both times 🥳 Take care
We made some stuffed peppers Sunday and they was so good, hadn't had them in years. We used colored peppers for the first time and I will always use them now lol. It's been fun to try new recipes and use what you have. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you SO much for following up on the OJ. I have used many of your canning recipes and completely trust your word. Canning OJ will be the next canning project for me. As always, I appreciate your content!
I have some of those ball jelly jars too my best friend found them in her father’s things he passed away and gifted them to me I will treasure them forever
Non-recipe meals are what we mostly live on here too. It's great to see what you cook for a week because it does give me ideas even if I can't completely copy each dish. Good luck on your milk kefir, hope it works great for you.
