Made to replicate 90s Citadel paints: NOSTALGIA 94 reviewed, still good?

Oldhammer fans rejoice, you can now paint like it’s 1994 again! Warcolours' Nostalgia 94 range is designed to recreate the retro colours and vintage feeling of the Citadel Colour paint range of the late 90s. Since then, miniature paints have made quite some progress, so I’m curious whether nostalgia paints can keep up with modern paint ranges like Vallejo Game Color, Pro Acryl, or AK Interactive 3rd Gen or not.

I would never deny anyone their nostalgia for what they might've missed. But speaking as a guy who lived through it, I think the paints we have today are infinitely better. Especially the shades. I wished I'd had them in the 90's!

Thank you Stahly for the honest review! As for the nostalgia'88, this range was available for 5 years+ and to be honest, when compared to nostalgia'94 you will find that many colours are the same, while others are just re-named. My plan is: to have all the colours left behind (e.g. Titillating pink) in the new range as bonus additions (named nostalgia 88 still). And also publish a conversion chart so people know how the colours have been developed.

Nostalgia 94 is only available from Warcolours directly: www.warcolours.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=215&tracking=646882f869ad4 Please note that Warcolours will discontinue the Nostalgia 88 range soon to make room for Nostalgia 94. From what I've heard a lot of colours with the same name are the same, but not all.

They just aren't opaque enough. The nostalgia feeling is nice though.

I had the late 90's paint set, so they had those "bolt shell" design. Still, better than the current pots. But they were the same colors. I can still smell them.

The screw top hex containers right?? I have those. I found the entire set new in box on ebay for $26 5 years ago. Some of them have dried to the point i couldnt reactivate them but i still have them up on my rack in order. Its very nostalgic. I still use them today. I use them for my axis and allies pieces for a my giant global 1940 but if this company makes the full set of original 90s colors i will buy it instantly

They finally released the whole set! I bought the 88 as my first set of paints a year ago and I've been pretty happy with them as a base set that I fill in here and there with Vallejo for the gaps like the lack of purples, but there's enough in it to mix any color needed especially with their nice inks. I think the 88 series was discontinued but will be added back in later. I haven't seen a conversion chart yet, so if you like the 88 colors, Elements games gets batches every now and then. I hope the new ones are the same or better. I just started painting a year ago so I can't really compare them to the originals but they work well with modern paints like the new reformulated Vallejo, AK, and Monument hobbies. I'd jump on the 94 set if I hadn't just bought the complete monument line.

When I was a child I did try to paint a rhino using the enchanted blue in that set. With a very small brush over white primer. It didn't go well. Nor did the hand-painted big white arrow I tried to paint on the top hatch.

Games Workshop should bring back the 90s Citadel starter paint kits with minis/brush. They should also bring back the 2nd edition 40k complete boxed set. They would sell out instantly!

I wonder how consistent Citadel was between batches of ghe same color and over the years. And how the paints have aged.

They're pretty dope, and as owner of quite a lot of the 90s hex pots, can't wait to try these out. The Gobbo is definitely missing the weird warmth of the original tbo.

@Stahly (Tale of Painters) Great review as always. On an unrelated topic, someone mentioned Army Speed Paints 2.0 had a cracking issue, I wondered about your experience / opinion with this was?
@stahly_taleofpainters
@stahly_taleofpainters Год назад
Haven't encountered that yet, but I'l keep an eye on it. I guess it might have been an issue with a non-acrylic based primer that hasn't fully cured yet.

Hi Stahly, wonderful little overview! I have a weirdly specific question: how do these paints compare (in terms of opacity and vibrancy) to their closest analogues in the Army Painter's Warpaints range?
@stahly_taleofpainters
@stahly_taleofpainters Год назад
I think Warpaints are a bit less satin and have better opacity overall. While they have a lot of vibrant colours as well, Nostalgia might be a bit more vibrant in direct comparison. And their consistency is smoother and slightly thinner than most Warpaints. Hope this helps :)

Jep. I startet with the same Paint Set back in the 90ies, when I got into the 40k hobby for the first time. Do you have an Opinion about Coat D'arms? As far as the mouth goes the colours are more or less the old original formula because the colours are mixed together by the old manufacturer, which worked for GW back in the 90ies.

I've read the Fauxhammer review: www.fauxhammer.com/reviews/coat-darms-paint-review-for-miniatures-wargames-models/ Since the colour match isn't that close and they are apparently more of a match to the 80s range, they weren't too interesting for me. Honestly, I prefer modern paint ranges.
@ThomasGallinari
@ThomasGallinari Год назад
Not sure a modern paint range that is as sh***y as a 30 yo range is such a good move. Same pigments yes, but with better properties would have been better, should be enough to experience nostalgia.

can you paint blood red on a chaos black undercoat?

Look at the video, stahly needs 5 coats of red over a white primed surface to get an even finish. In short, no.

I want to like them, but I invested in the 88 range to be my main range only to see now they’re being discontinued despite never being marketed as limited edition. Fool me once…. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to pass as I don’t trust this to not just be another gimmick short term release.
@stahly_taleofpainters
@stahly_taleofpainters Год назад
Yeah I understand, but wasn't the 88 range out for quite a few years? I think they're being retired to make space for the 94 range.

@MasterShake9000
@MasterShake9000 Год назад
@@christopherheintz2634 I’m aware of that, but if you’re not planning on making a product permanent, it should be openly and explicitly labeled as such. That’s my complaint. If 88 had been upfront labeled as a limited release to be replaced once the anniversary for the 94 range came up, I could have chosen not to invest in it. There was just no indication of this. I can’t afford to keep gambling on a paint range sticking around when the manufacturer has established they won’t be honest about its long-term plans. Put another way - what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. GW would have been crucified if they’d pulled a similar stunt. Being small or independent isn’t an excuse.
@Bog_Dog
@Bog_Dog Год назад
@MasterShake9000 honestly though whats your expectation for when someone says it's permanent or limited ? I'd say multiple years is far from limited. Gw paints changed multiple times across 2 decades
@MasterShake9000
@MasterShake9000 Год назад
@@Bog_Dog I'll just be blunt: It appears that Warcolours dropped 88 to make room for a chance to capitalize on the anniversary of the 94 range by "reformulating" the paints and launching the 94 range. If 88 had been selling poorly, they almost certainly wouldn't have wasted further effort with a 94 version - which in turn means the only reason to kill off the 88 range is solely to capitalize on a gimmick anniversary cash-in. If GW did a range change for that reason, they'd (rightly) be crucified. AFAIK, most of GW's paint changes over the years have been due to them changing distributors. IE - not an arbitrary decision to can a line. Otherwise their range changes have kept the existing range but added to it and/or removed less successful items. IE - not every GW change has been a cancelation of all existing paints. And again, there was no real announcement of this either. People (rightly) bag on GW for repeatedly out of the blue discontinuing models with no real warning. At least with paint changes they give alerts that certain items will be discontinued on a given date. There was not only never any indication that this was a limited release range, but the "announcement" is literally just going to their website of your own accord and realizing their entire 88 range is on clearance with a significant number of items already out of stock. Serpentbite Leather was already gone by the time I realized what was happening. So again, I'm not being unrealistic or too demanding here. If a paint range isn't intended to be a permanent part of the range, be up front about it. Once you terminate it, give forewarning about it. Warcolours did neither, clearly because they want to push a brand new range without anyone wondering how long this one will last. Which, again, GW would have been crucified for if they'd pulled such a tactic."Not being GW" isn't a blank check to act like or worse than GW.
