I cannot stress enough how fantastic the blonde ambition tour was there will never be anything like it. They will things that will come close but Madonna live in the 80s and 90s is like something you’ve never seen.

I actually saw this live back in 1990 from the 6th row at the meadowlands in NJ. This was the opening number and she would start out speaking live to the audience and then she sang against a backing track for the rest, so that while she danced you didn’t hear the breaths and gaps. So it was a mix of live and prerecorded. Some of the songs she sang fully live, like the ballads and the songs that didn’t have really strenuous dancing. It was a phenomenal concert. One of the best I’ve ever been to. Super exciting with so many celebrities in the audience. It felt like everybody was there since it was right outside NYC. This version you’re watching is from the concert film “Truth or Dare” and it’s probably super mixed to get rid of any off notes or anything so that it practically sounds like a studio quality recording. In the movie they show clips of her performing around the world and this is when she comes from Japan where the tour opened outdoors during the rainy season and they performed in jackets and she says she was glad to get back to America so she could perform the show as it was meant to be seen. The “Alright America” is probably faked because she always said hello to the city she was in not to the country.

First and foremost, this was history in the making. Nobody was doing concerts like this back then. It was a big deal. When I went to this concert, my mouth was on the floor most of the time. My mind was blown. When younger people watch her, they do not understand how groundbreaking this was. They are used to seeing big spectacles now days, so its no big deal to them. I always wish they could experience what we did of seeing something like this for the very first time. Watching it now still gives me that feeling. Like, not only did this woman change music history, and pop history but she changed woman's history as well. Also, if im not mistaken, this clip is from her Truth Or Dare documentary (which also changed television history and was the catalyst for reality tv) which a lot of the stage perfomances where from her stop in Detroit.

yes this was lipsynced. some nights she sang live over the track... most nights she completely lipped it, including here. all of the audio in this version is sweetened since its from her movie Truth or Dare. The audiences reactions were amplified, especially during her most controversial 'moves'. ...and that explains the whole Paris/"All right America!"thing... this is actually a performance featured in the film. Leading into this performance, she talks about finally getting to perform in America after a horrible time in japan performing in freezing cold & pouring rain at an outdoor stadium for weeks to kick off the tour. she thought her European (specifically her Paris shows) were her strongest so they were the performances used in the movie. But for this scene she had to overdub the "all right America" to make it fit the scene/plot. yall should watch the film (AFTER the concert!). its AMAZINGLY entertaining & a classic just like this tour. this was Madonna at her most powerful.. the most famous woman on the planet. it was really good times!!

She sounds great on this because this number was lipsynced and it is completely fine. It's high energy dance number. She performed similar choreography during her 1989 MTV VMA and there she was singing live.

My first ever Madonna tour as a then 16 year old. Wembley Stadium. She absolutely blew me away with this show. I remember as she rises up out of the stage I started to cry 😂 the atmosphere was like nothing else I’ve ever witnessed before or since. She was absolutely on fire. This show changed how others did live shows. After this, live performances were never the same. She made history with this tour. The younger generation will never understand all that she did back in the early days. She was and still is HUGELY IMPORTANT in the history of music, without Madonna breaking so many boundaries, female artists wouldn’t be quite where they are today. There will never be another Madonna, she’s the last of the true legends IMO.

Madonna started co writing her music from DAY 1, in fact she was writing music before she was signed to a record deal and her first single she released in 1982 is Everybody - it was written by her - yes Madonna is not like your average performer - She is unique in oh so many ways - A god one might say.

Really good analysis guys. There’s a few things to consider for this tour. One is she sings 90% of it live in the stadium as you see her in front of you. This tour also uses pre-recorded vocals like for this number you just watched. That’s because this is the most choreographed song in the show and it’s a high energy dance number so she opted for lip-synching the first number. If you watch the whole show, you’ll see that for the most part she sings live. Thing to consider is that they also recorded all the shows on the tour to put together a tour film so what you’re getting is perhaps the best shot from one dance routine from one city spliced in with a shot overhead maybe from another show, etc. It’s all put together from the entire tour. In Madonna’s case, she releases it to the public either on HBO or in physical media formats. But if you were to go to Madonna concert you would see her and hear her singing live on stage. Another thing to note is that this tour film was done twice. They put together a show in Japan and another show in Nice France I believe. This particular part of the tour with her curly hair is the latter half of the tour when she gave up wearing the iconic ponytail because it proved to be too problematic. Fans prefer the ponytail because of its iconic status, but you’ll see a fair amounts of the curly hair on RU-vid as well.

Actually (the Madonna nerd gets ready to shine his wisdom :D): the performance is recorded in Paris, France. They recorded, I believe, 3 dress rehearsals without an audience in addition to the 3 live actual concerts in Paris. The recording was made for her tour documentary "Truth of Dare" (or "In Bed With Madonna" in Europe) to have live segments in between the documented tour life and because "Express Yourself" was the first song of the set, Madonna opened the dress rehearsal shows recorded specifically for the document with this reference of being America, when in reality she was in Paris. So there. That´s the explanation :)

The "technicholor" video recording for the film "truth or dare" of her live performance for the 1990 Blond Ambition Tour was made during her concerts in Paris France, the one you guys just watched-reacted. The part when she says "all right america" was dubbed and added from one of the US dates during the editing process for the cinematic release of the documentary. And they added this "all right america" part because in the film to chronologically needed to make sense since the tour is starting the US leg, were she performed in its entirety with the famous ponytail and here she has the curls which she only performed during her European legof the tour. In the intro originally she said “Alright Paris” this has been dubbed over with ‘alright America’ to fit in with the film where she returned to America from the first leg in Japan. Madonna’s mic was live but in this song a vocal backtrack was used, mainly I think because of the heavy choreography. She kind of dipped in and out of the vocals during 3 different songs in the entire show, all of them were heavily choreographed songs . The rest of the show was totally live other than a duet where she blatantly said she was going to lip synch. Gotta love her lol

Madonna always puts on a great show. She shines onstage. Boundless energy. When the crowd was screaming, its loudest every time Madonna did something sexual, I think that was just the sound editors doing that. I was at this tour, in Toronto. The loudest screams, to my recollection, happened when she came up that elevator. When you hear Madonna‘s vocal performance being too perfect, there was some assistance involved. There was a backtrack playing,and Madonna, Donna De Lory, and Nikki Harris singing live as well. She often does this with heavily choreographed routines, where she can’t really sing and dance so strenuously at the same time. Also, the version from Nice France, she enters speaking French. I think this concert is actually from Houston, Texas.

I was there for Madonna’s show in 1991? It’s been so long I can’t remember. Her father’s birthday was that day. The Detroit Pistons had to play that day so the show had wait for the following day, her father was brought up on stage and sang Happy Birthday to him 🎊 🎉

There was so much dancing that it was a mix of live and recorded tracks. Her mic was live but she was singing over a track so it could be smoother, cause she's jumping all over the place. She does have moments in the concert where she only sings live. She sounded real good. Not Whitney Houston, but a very nice timber to her voice. This was one my favorite concerts. HBO has a special of the Blond Ambition Tour. I've seen it a gajillion times. ❤

Before this, concerts were a bit of dancing, minor costume changes and standing at a mic singing. The tour changed the trajectory of live concert performance. The Madonna mic, the sets, the costumes (by Jean Paul Gauthier), the themes, it changed to world literally. Vince Paterson who put this together for Madonna, has a fav review. It's from the Pope. He said, "with the Blond Ambition tour, Satan has been re released upon the world." No higher praise indeed. Madonna was threatened with arrest on this tour. Madonna was excommunicated from the Catholic Church for this tour. It is hard to describe how huge this was at the time.

MDNA TOUR!! Also this Tour truly changed the way pop stars did shows. She had set changes costumes, interludes, everything. And has since continued to be at her best on tour. I saw her Celebration Tour this year at the Kia Forum in LA, for my bday week, twice and she easily was in my top 3 shows I’ve seen live. And 4 decades in the game still being able to impress me so much is honestly incredible. The Celebration Tour was filmed in Mexico so hopefully that footage will be released soon for you guys to check out!

The show video was recorded in Paris Bercy Arena, but you saw the video from the movie Thru or Dare where the Director used for all the documentary movie the Paris show songs, so that is why the camera is far from her when she said America in that audio words are from the Houston show, the first show of the tour in America after Japan dates ... if you wnat to see the real live HBO transmision, search The Blond Ambition live in Nice France 1990. And you are so right , she was the first singer in use a record of her live best performance in just 2 songs of this show in the all the dates of the tour, Express Yourself and Vouge, all the rest of the show is totaly live ...

I was at the London Wembley Stadium show for this and can definitely confirm this being the opening number with a great deal of dancing and choreography, it was indeed lip synced. However, most of the show was performed with her singing live. And the title is correct because in Japan and the USA she had her famous pony-tail and when she came to Europe she went with the curls. You hear her say 'hello America' because that was dubbed for her documentary 'in bed with madonna' however the actual footage is from Paris.

I saw the Blonde Ambition World Tour in Paris twice in 1990. I still have my program book signed by J.P. Gaultier. As he draws a special picture on the back of Madonna from Express Yourself.

This video is from her tour documentary "Truth Or Dare." The video was recorded in Paris, but this song was shown during the part of the movie where they are in America, so they dubbed in the "Alright America" to fit with the movie. The audio was recorded live, but cleaned up later a bit to sound good for the movie. Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" is essentially this song with a slightly different melody and different lyrics. Madonna later made light of this on a later tour when she did a mashup of this song and the Gaga song and also added in her song called "She's Not Me."

The concert footage for the film, Truth Or Dare, was shot in Paris. The "Express Yourself" segment in the film was placed after her narration about beginning the Blond Ambition Tour in America, therefore they dubbed over her speaking French to "Alright, America! Do you believe in love?" Due to the choreography, Madonna was mostly singing over playback for "Express Yourself"

I love that we have normalized this but for the early 90s, specially during the AIDS Crisis, having openly gay dancers was a brave mood. Also, all of them are "race" mixed. Diversity was not in vogue in the early 90s. You can tell seeing concert videos from other artists of those years that unfortunately that wasn't the norm.

There has got to be a raw master roll of this complete Blond Ambition performance shot on anamorphic cameras lying somewhere on a storage, ready to be spliced together and mixed for a fantastic product like these clips from Truth or Dare. I mean the visual quality of these shots from a wide lens camera in 24fps is miles away from the ones taken with TV camera we got for the many versions of Blond Ambition Tour.

the title is incorrect. this was her Nice performance - the final stop for the BAT. The Nice show was bought by HBO and was broadcasting live in America. So she is aware of the US audience and speaks directly to them during the show. Subject of crotch grabbing also comes up. (Lighten' up, have a sense of humor.). The opening act I believe is lip-sync- she only did it live on the first few stops. The show is stunning the tour is Iconic. Very excited for this week:):)

The ‘all right America’ thing is purely dubbed in for the movie this is taken from. The tour was filmed with movie cameras in Paris for all the live performances interspersing the backstage documentary footage. But the thematic point in the movie when this song comes is when she talks about flying from Japan to America. So it would be daft to have her start the show ‘Bonjour Paris, est-ce que tu crois a l’amour’ (hello Paris, do you believe in love?) which is what she actually said at the show you are watching rather than ‘all right America’.

The thing that bothered me is in 84 the jacksons did a huge tour with massive production. Hydraulics theatrics etc and the critics slammed it as relying to heavy on high tech. Then she does it with this tour and the critics say they never saw anything like it. And a lot think that this tour was the benchmark even though the stairs coming from the floor at the beginning was directly taken from that show by vincent patterson.
