This was the era I liked best of Madonna. When she was in her 40’s. The Ray of Light, Music, American Life and Confessions on a Dance Floor albums. Her kids were children at the time and she was married. Maybe all of that gave her some groundedness.
I agree, I've been following her since the eighties and the early 2000s she looked and sounded gorgeous 🔥 I watch the confessions concert at least once every couple of months 😁
I lucky enough to get tickets to Letterman this particular night. I was on vacation in New York City to see the Rocky horror picture show live on Broadway! Starring Joan. Chad and Dick cavett and a fantastic troop of players. And I just happened to manage to nail tickets to Letterman which they record at 6:00 p.m. or they did at that time and it left just enough time to grab a drink afterward and make my way to the theater. It was the spectacular evening. I didn't know at the time that Madonna was going to be on Letterman that night. I just booked tickets because I was able to get in and I thought it would be fun. During the commercial breaks she was hilarious. Her and David went back and forth and it was just so much fun that entire evening was busy and just absolutely as much fun as you could have in your life seeing Madonna and then Rocky horror live on Broadway and then going out to a few bars. What a wonderful night!
@@imho2278 You're in a tiny minority so are probably deaf. The Guinness World Records acknowledged her as the bestselling female music artist of all time. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is the bestselling female rock artist of the 20th century and the third highest-certified female albums artist in the United States, with 65.5 million certified album units. She has the most RIAA multi-platinum albums by a female artist, with 12 releases (tying with Barbra Streisand).
@capps ginny you don’t even know what you’re talking about. Madonna writes her music along with other another writer or 2 and she’s a co producer on every track??? So yes she does craft her music. Where did you get the idea that she didn’t? Lmao
No back up? There’s literally a guy playing the guitar right next to her backing her up. And honestly, I love Madonna but let’s be honest, her guitar playing is elementary school at best.
@@Kick_Rocks_ she did say she just learned, and I play guitar myself it's very hard to sing and play at the same time, it doesnt come natrually.. and yes I see the guy next to her, she has no band, no guy on a keyboard controlling everything
This performance must have been nerve wrecking for Madonna... She obviously felt vulnerable and insecure, albeit she did it! Pure and uncut, I love and miss this Madonna
I’ve never heard this acoustic version - just raw talent: Voice, guitar playing, songwriting - impressive and simple at the same time. Great lyrics, too ✨
Watching Madonna on the David Letterman Show over the years has always been fascinating. The back and forth banter and interaction between them is full of wit and is really funny. Letterman likes to bait her to talk about personal stuff and controversies but she’s learned from previous experience how to parry them and turn the questions back at him. But through it all, they appear to have developed a genuine respect and appreciation of each other. No nastiness or crudeness here, just two intelligent people entertaining their audience. Madonna was gracious and Letterman obliged her.
At the time this was absolutely one of the most discussed and loved performances that she ever gave. Her Drowned World tour began a bit later in 2001. The twin towers can be seen during one of the commercials. Sad. Her most creative tour and tremendously successful. 911 happened when she was performing in LA. All flights were halted. She had to cancel a show then reschedule later in the week. Her guitar teacher is Monte Pitman. His first tour with her as lead guitarist. He continues to perform with her to this day. She was very happy here. Married Guy Ritchie not long after this. She and Dave have always had great chemistry. It was a lovely performance. Her guitar playing in concerts continues. She is now 60. She has six children. She walked the talk with respect to Malawi. She has now adopted four children from there. New album coming this year followed by her 11th tour. It was fun to see this again. I’m a longtime fan. Seen all of her tours. 17 performances. She always brings her A game. She’s incredibly wealthy. The work is very hard. She doesn’t have to work. But clearly she still loves what she does. I, like all of her fans have remained curious all these years. From the eighties till now. How great is that?
She had to change the video for Love Profusion because of the Twin Towers. It makes me wonder what it would have been like, if it was never altered. Perhaps there was more destruction - buildings falling, planes crashing etc. The video is great, regardless. I love the contrast between paradise / utopia & the dark, busy, stormy streets with lightning. Very reflective of how people think of Hollywood stardom (The American Dream) & the harsh realities of it, that she faced.
I wish I had stayed a fan, but I barely recognize her now, physically or mentally. I feel really sad because I went to see all the tours since "Drowned World", but she went too far in mediocrity and desperation now. She seemed determined to be recognized by the young crowd, which she'll never achieve, since age IS a primary factor for a youth idols.
@@louloutre I never understood why she had so much cosmetic work done. I figured she would have a little maintenance through the years but not what she has had done. I think she is caught up in her own celebrity now. She used to call her life a fishbowl but now she lives in a bubble. Her last concert tour was overproduced in my opinion. I couldn't watch it from start to finish and I have been a big fan of hers through the years. All the staging was too "busy" and claustrophobic. I could tell that she relies more and more on her dancers. She dances less and less and when she does dance, there is barely any choreography.
Around this time she was aging gracefully, then did those weird things to her face, and the butt implants.. Oh dear. Come on Madonna, you are not Nicki Minaj. Don't envy her silliness.
@Julian P I actually thought she would age gracefully. She has too much money. She does look very bloated- stretching out as many wrinkles as she can. I recently saw her, and was very disappointed.
I've watched this interview so many times over the years. I still think it is one of the best she's done. Madonna went from here to Ray of Light to Confessions. She looked and dressed fantastically. She was living in London with Guy and her style became more subdued and European chic. Far and away my favourite Madonna period.
No... this shows that she's really a poor interview when someone else is pushing HER buttons. She used to try and rock Dave with controversy and conflict early on. Here Dave made her uncomfortable and she couldn't deal with it. She seems embarrassed the entire time.
@@jackaction23 yes, she did. After her brother-in-law wrote the song originally she wrote the vocal melody, and her and her collaborator redid the music and production. All of that is writing.
@@ginasousabranco5637 well... she ruined the AL era herself .. in part... it was the complete wrong decision to release the titel track as the first single... a lot of people got a completely wrong impression about the album..
I wish more of these artists would do acoustic stuff. I Once heard Jon bon Jovi do a Mellow acoustic version of their songs without all the loud guitars. It was so amazingly beautiful, I had to stop and rewind and replay... couldn't believe what I just heard thinking 'hmm. I would buy that Jon bon Jovi rendition if it t were a record." It never was put on a record.
In this interview she seems so humbled. Children will change a person so fast. I totally appreciate how calm, cool, and collective she is here. It makes her that much more sexier and attractive to me. And I was that guy in the 80s that would not listen to any of her music at all.
This woman literally changed AND saved people's lives, including mine back in the 80's, and I don't think she realize how big an impact she has on people... 👑💋❤️
@@griff404 who said she didn’t save anyone or had any impact on people are their lives? You? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😇😅😅😅😑 leave. Why are you here anyway, you had to have searched for this video cause ain’t no way it’s popping up in your recommended.
Her voice isn't spectacular like other singers but it's massively iconic. I hear it and it's unmistakable and conjures up my time as a young person in the 80s and how iconic she was to the Era and for women.
WTF are you talking about isn't spectacular??? She is one of very few who are super talented because she is the top vocalist of all time. She didn't have a band here and she pulled off playing a guitar and sang beautifully.
Everybody got sassy with you but you're not completely wrong lol. I think people forget her ballads though. She hardly makes them anymore so I think we all have a tendency to think of her as only making top tier pop and dance music when she actually has a great collection of ballads where her voice is spectacular.
Madonna was her most beautiful from 1999 to 2006. She looks so gorgeous here. I wish she would have just aged natural. She would have looked SOOO amazing just aging normal. But I love her song "tell me love isn't true" and also "musicccc". I can't remember the names to those songs but late 90s and early 2000s Madonna was the best! She looks beautiful with minimal make up and blonde hair.
@@Jenniforest I think plastic surgery is like a lot of rackets. They claim they're fixing you but they mess something up every time they touch you. Then they claim you have to keep coming back so that they can eventually get you all fixed, which never happens.
She is so Full of Innocence, Wits , Creativity and Life! Gosh!! I only knew her through her song "Frozen" and nothing before or after that song! But looks like missed such Diva!!! Mind Blowing!!!
And that right there is why people either love her and idolise her or why they get irritated and are intimidated by her... she brakes all rules in my opinion but in a fun art controversial and thought provoking way
What a genuine and inspiring person she really is. Her musical diversity is genius really. Always fresh and innovative. Have nothing but love and respect for this incredible lady...Why because she deserves it and has definitely earned it. Luv you Madonna long live our real universal queen.
@@imho2278 I'm betting there aren't as many teenagers who co write and perform a top ten song on television after 6 lessons than there are ho's that troll around looking for problems.
Absolutely. "Ray of Light" was the version of an older, wiser Madonna we deserve. If only she'd kept on that path. But somehow, dressing as a cheerleader and desperately trying to kiss the next big pop stars (be them of either sex) and trying to pin down the next fad before it's out of date appeals to her more. Madonna will always be the Queen of Pop - there are just so many of us out there that hope she can actually regain her throne again before she completes her transformation into Norma Desmond. No - wait! Maybe Baby Jane Hudson is a better fit.
@@giggles7179 Madonna quite literally has 39 million active listeners on Spotify and 84 arena concerts starting next month. Do you have any idea how stupid comments like this make you look?
Wow Madonna can sing! I LOVE HER!! Didn't care how she pulled it off. This is one of my favorite songs of hers. Adore this version. Now I have to go watch the video, which is awesome probably why I love the song so much. Was living in Vegas, had a break 💔 up. Seeing her kick up dirt and men worshipping her(when I had TONS of attention too) I loved her fighting for love. Best interview with her I've ever seen.
She’s fed up of being asked questions that people ask her just because she’s a woman. She has a career and that’s why she’s there, so she wants to be asked about that, rather than motherhood and patronising questions that people don’t ask men.
21:00 she plays acoustic wonderfully and her singing on this is way better than the recording!! So new and fresh if you haven’t heard her sing this tempo! ❤❤❤❤
I love Madonna in all the era’s she has gone through. Through her worse times to good time. I guess I am just a fan. She is a music legend, one of a kind.
I always regarded Madonna work as silly and frivolous till the day I watched the videoclip of 'Frozen' on MTV Brasil. I also noticed she irradiated a different glow, the kind only real stars are capable of. And all of this is confirmed on this interview.
She was on the right track to get older in style: Look, outfit, hair and makeup, body and most importantly the music was on point. And then Hard Candy and 5 other albums and surgeries happened!
He’s trying so hard to break her into the younger M he knows, but she’s so settled, self aware of her past/but made peace with it. He doesn’t ask her any questions of depth bc it would show her true intelligence that he can’t handle - and would compromise his dominance. Real 90’s #bro energy.
It is not really hard to sing and play an instrument at the same time. Almost every famous musician of the 20th century was able to do it no problem. In point of fact her singing and playing was average at best.
Madonna is a boss. Intelligent, beautiful and energetic. She helped define the 80s ..much better example for young women than Britney Spears was at her peak. Lady Gaga has used Madonna as a model for career building.
Without a doubt, of the few interviews I've seen Madonna on with David, she is by far the most attractive here than any other interview I've seen. I was truly "wowed"!!
Madonna has 39 million active listeners on Spotify and 84 arena concerts starting next month. 40 years into her career. 22 years after this episode aired.
@@cody7378 meh she seems super rude and desperate for approval now. She doesn't come across as happy at all. More like aging and hating it. But I could be wrong.
Madonna is an Icon. Love her work. This was married Madonna. You can't hold her spirirt. She is a free spirit. I wish her the best on her Celebration Tour 2023. She will do well.
So she is playing the rhythm guitar and he is playing the melody guitar?? She has got some amazing skills... sings, writes, acts, directs, produces, choreographs, publishes, markets, dances her ass off, plays drums, plays guitar, humanitarian, mother-- no wonder she is so rich..
@@riannadohertyy7246 Bitch what the fuck does that have to do with dancing or writing? 😂😂 Being a hit isn't the same as being talented. Tekashi69 has a bunch of hit records, he's still a terrible musician. Asshat
She's actually cool here I don't understand why she is arrogant and difficult in other interviews.. I've noticed she's more relaxed and cool with people she knows
Madonna is a Queen! I've loved her, music, dance, creativity, and her messages since I was a little girl, the first song I loved of hers was Lucky Star when I was 7 years old in 3rd grade and still love her today at 44 years old. She puts out great music and she is a true entertainer!! And just to think she never thought she was a singer or actress but just a dancer.
These are the moments when I forget why I fell in love with her....and I have so many moments where I absolutely loathe her....it’s a love hate with Madonna ❤️💔
Although she tries to distance herself from being from Michigan, as a resident of Michigan I can plainly see she's definitely a Michigander. And that's a compliment.
Her roots are from my dad's hometown in Abruzzo, Italy... so what's your point? Her being an artist has nothing to do with "being from Michigan" ... doesn't mean she "distances" herself from ANYTHING... come back to the light, dear... !
I agree with Hugh. She's been a proud New Yorker for so long... it would be nice to see her show some more love to Michigan. EVERYTHING started for her THERE... NOT in NYC. If you research her ancestry, her great-great-grandparents were Michiganders who emigrated from Quebec. Lots of history there. Anyway, much love to Michigan, NYC & Italy! 🇮🇹🇺🇲💪💯
