I love her, love this song so much. I saw her Madame X show last year, best show I have ever seen. Madonna sings so amazing live now, she doesn't sound so good here.

She found the mix later in the song, which was interesting because it’s higher consistently. She gets in trouble when she treads into her lower chest voice with a lot of volume. But she relaxed and mixed at the end and sounded better. But the beginning was so flat. I wonder if it had been half a step higher or lower, then it would have been easier
I love her vocals here. It's a different take on the song and she is the queen of reinvention. A male singer's voice can crack, can sing off key, struggle to sing beyond 2 octaves yet Dylan, Springsteen, Petty, Bono are praised for their vocals. when david bowie's voice cracks it adds so much to a song. Even the greatest vocalists (except the fake ones that lip-sync by the way) have terrible vocal performances. Madonna has proven countless times that when she wants and with the right song she can shine vocally as well. The problem in this, ironically, was the result of the vocal lessons that she had had to face the movie Evita. She nailed "Ray of Light" and "Little Star" at the Oprah Winfrey Show, both fantastic performances singing wise. However, it was hard for her to maintain that standard because she probably went a bit beyond her limits as a singer with this project, hence why the following performances related to the ROL era (this one included) weren't as exciting. In the American Life era her live vocals were better and the songs far less difficult, for instance she sounded great during the Re-Invention Tour.

The sound must have drown her out bc she sounds shrill and sounds unpleasant. She sounds pitchy with no breath support as if she doesn't know how to control her voice. It's hit or miss with her voice.

Talent shows like X factor or The Voice exclusively produce artists that are copies of copies of copies of already known artists. Those people lack individuality, they don't possess an actual artistic "personality". None of those people will end up in the book of the most legendary iconic and timeless music artists of all time. They're just "random singers". Madonna is a timeless legendary music artist because she is one of a kind, one in a billion. There's a reason why thousands and thousands of other female music artists attempted to copy Madonna to a T, trying to steal her style, music, performances, ideas, moves etc and they all failed eventually. There could be only one Madonna.
Well that god she wrote, sang and produced her debut album before she even got signed. Started drumming in a punk band etc. She did it her own way and did not need talent shows. She's an artist, that creates her own songs, that's more than can be said about people going on X Factor singing other peoples songs and then being judged for being pitch perfect. They are just singers, not artists. I doubt Bowie, Jagger, Dylan would win the X Factor either but they are the greatest artists.
