____
"Vogue" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Madonna for her second soundtrack album, I'm Breathless (1990). It was released as the first single from the album on March 27, 1990, by Sire Records. Madonna was inspired by vogue dancers and choreographers Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza from the Harlem "House Ball" community, the origin of the dance form, and they introduced "vogueing" to her at the Sound Factory club in New York City. "Vogue" is a house song which set trends in dance music in the 1990s with strong influences of 1970s disco within its composition. "Vogue" also contains a spoken section, in which Madonna name-checks various "Golden Age" Hollywood stars. Lyrically, the song is about enjoying oneself on the dance floor no matter who one is and it contains a theme of escapism. "Vogue" has appeared in a remixed form on two of Madonna's greatest hits compilations: The Immaculate Collection (1990) and Celebration (2009).
Critically, "Vogue" has been met with appreciation ever since its release; reviewers have praised its anthemic nature and listed it as one of Madonna's career highlights. Commercially, the song remains one of Madonna's biggest international hits, topping the charts in over 30 countries, including Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. It became the world's best-selling single of 1990, selling over six million copies.
The accompanying music video for "Vogue", directed by David Fincher, was shot in black-and-white and takes stylistic inspiration from the 1920s and 1930s. Madonna and her dancers can be seen vogueing to different choreographed moves. The video has been ranked as one of the greatest of all time in different critic lists and polls, and won three awards at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards out of a total of nine nominations.
Madonna has performed the song on six of her world tours, at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards and at her performance during the halftime show of Super Bowl XLVI. The song has also been featured on the soundtrack of The Devil Wears Prada (2006), as well as in "The Power of Madonna" episode of the Fox show Glee. Writers and critics have noted the video and the song's influence in bringing an underground subculture into mainstream popular culture through the postmodern nature of her power and influence, as well as the way in which it followed a new trend in which dance music enjoyed widespread popularity.

I just remember that at the time this blew people’s minds. Not saying Madonna invented the idea of a theatrical pop music performance, but she most definitely elevated it, and pushed future pop performers to up the ante. The snapping fans alone make this 🔥

Man this brings back so many memories. I was in the TV room in the basement watching the VMA’s. I was really excited because Madonna and Janet were performing that year. Janet did a fine performance of Black Cat but this was pretty much the only performance that people were talking about that night. I remember she released it on VHS and I bought a copy. It’s absolutely timeless. If someone were to do it today I think it would still feel fresh. That was a great time for pop music. Nice reaction as always! Also when you watch Truth or Dare you’ll get to know the dancer’s personalities really well and it sort of gives this performance even more depth.

Great reaction, Empress! I never tire of watching this performance. I remember, at the time, some entertainment commentators making a fuss that she was lip-syncing - having ZERO understanding that lip-syncing is central to ballroom culture, the whole basis for Vogue. Now, after 14 seasons of Rupaul, the mainstream finally gets that playing at a performance is itself a performance, an art form. Shit, half the time people are mic-ed in these MTV performances, you're still mostly hearing backing track. Here she was actually being true to the art form she was giving the spotlight to. It's exquisite.

😍The comeuppance is off the charts. She was so huge before this but, goes into another stratosphere here. I also love that dance move where they all move at once, in a close group, across the stage. It's so bad a$$!!! My mind was blown the first time I saw it on the tour during Like A Prayer. I will never ever tire of watching this performance. It's simply one of her best. That fan move, where the girls throw the fans in the air and catch them, they practiced it all day and never got it right until right then. You can see on M's face that she was very pleased about how the performance was going. I miss this crew. Most were with her for a long time. Btw, I think you mean The Blond Ambition Tour. 😘

At the time, I was glued to the tv awaiting this performance. Vince Patterson, who choreographed Blond Ambition, was asked to do something different with Vogue for the VMA's. One of the things I admire ab her was how she truly saw talent and wanted the best of the best dancers. Back then those Black boys and Asian guy would prob been turned away at auditions bc they weren’t what the world was used to looking at in media. She saw how those dancers pushed her game up that high. A lot of pop girls have dancers but they aren’t as picky as Madonna. She doesn’t see them as just props or extras; their individuality makes the show.

Ugh. My internet and WiFi are down tonight and it took almost 20 minutes to watch this video. I hate to wait to optimize! ( I almost forgot that word) I believe this performance was shown on tv after we had watched the Truth or Dare documentary as I remember knowing all the dancers names and relationships with M and each other. Jose and Luis Xtravaganza from the NYC Ballroon scene. Salam and Carlton. ( he is in the JJ Love Will Never Do video) Kevin and Gabriel and finally Oliver who goes under her dress. They had a supposed fling during the tour. The costumes were based on the 1988 film Dangerous Liasons ( Very good and star studded cast) I would say this was French Renaissance and not Victorian Age. Great Reaction, Empress ❤ Truth or Dare should be next!!
@graphiquejack
@graphiquejack 2 года назад
French Baroque or Rococo... the Renaissance (da Vinci, Borgias, Medici, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I) was earlier. (the main period we think of as the renaissance was around the 1450s to 1570s or so, but technically it was from around 1300-1600) Marie Antoinette was Queen of France (1774 to 1793) during the late baroque/rococo era (1600-1750) or perhaps the early French Neoclassical era, but I think of that more as happening after the Revolution and with Napoleon and Josephine.
