I lived in Madrid for a short time when I was young. Worked at the Mine Shaft tavern, also worked at a general store. Met a lot of interesting people. I will always have fond memories of that place. The time was 1982 I believe.
I remember that from Wild Hogs. I love ghost towns. I share your interest in exploring. I'm in Arizona though. I rang the bell so I don't miss any of your new stuff. - Greg
If the truth were known, Madrid is really a tourist enclave full of resident crazies. That's what makes it fun. You just never know what strange birds you'll meet over a cup of Joe. Magnificent scenery, quirky lifestyles, and good coffee. Java Junction is sort of ground zero for locals. Cerrillos is even slower and just a couple of miles north.
I rode up there in 85 from Santa Fe and it was really cool at the time. It was like being in a 60's time capsule. The town was full of these old hippies. We were drinking at the Mine Shaft bar and meeting all kinds of people. I imagine that after the movies the place is probably screwed up and touristy now. It was genuine back then, but unfortunately nothing lasts anymore in this modern Life. Everything becomes a Disney theme park of one kind or the other.
