Possibly a rare track on the internet. Came up in discussion as it was once used as TV close-down music by Granada Television back in the late '70's.
Written by John McKenna
Acoustic guitar Isaac Guillory
Electric Piano Ronnie Leahy
From the album Walk on water

Yes I remember it being one of two closing tunes on Granada. I almost bought the LP I saw it in a shop, and was going back after I done the shopping elsewhere but when I went back it had gone. This was in days before the internet. I've been looking for the song and any mention it till I found this video it, I had been looking for a May not a Mae. Thanks for posting it.

Well bloody hell, finally fount it, been looking forever. I grew up in the Granada area but i thought it was played during a tv strike in the 70's along with a badly miming Lonnie Donegan doing Rock Island Line. They were on instead of adverts at kids viewing after school, but i'm happy to be corrected if this wasn't the case. I knew the title but thought it was Catherine Howe singing which threw me off the scent for a decade or two!

Glad you are happy to have found it. I worked at Granada TV for many years and heard it when I worked in the Network Control Room, aka NCR, as it was played as the close down music sometimes. Remember the days when the TV went off the air just after midnight ? I enquired who the artist was and the track name and then went to various record shops in the centre of Manchester until I found the album for a cost of £2.25. The price sticker is still on it ! Life is so much easier nowadays with such apps as Shazam etc to find tracks.

It didn't help me. I knew some of the lyrics and put them in song finding apps but to no avail. I even emailed Catherine Howe but she'd never heard of it. I'm obviously rubbish at the computer thing, but still a happy bunny for finding it. I guess you have great memories of working at Granada.

@@briancollison5319 I prefered the version on Granada tbh, than this one, I actually bought the Album in the early 80’s but I was a bit disappointed when it was not that version with the electric piano on it, but this one instead.

@@jimmorley1091 I did the exact same thing... but my 'singer' was Annie MacDonald. I strangely enough got absolutely nowhere lol! I'm now trying to 'track' down the arrangement made for Granada. I have the LP and got it put onto CD.

Hi Brian, I left a few comments below ( all good) it was only then I read you used to work at Granada. I have been searching for this track for literally decades. I think it was played either every Friday (prob) or Saturday night. Anyway I managed to find out it was Mae. I had been searching for a lady singer with the surname McDonald... had the exact title... but not the Artist. all those years of searching lol. I finally got a hint on that discussion on FB ...I thought it was around 2016? Anyway, someone came up with Mae McKenna on there. I finally got the LP although it cost me far more than £2.50!!! Ha ha. I then was lucky enough to talk with Mae... extremely nice person. It was then I found out I'd had her brother and cousins in my record collection for almost 45 years...The Alex Harvey Band! She was very nice and explained that the tv track was an 'arrangement' by Mike Moran? He has the arrangement to this day. I hope someday he'll release it or upload it somewhere. Hearing this now puts goosebumps on my arms etc. My dad loved it...although he give me a glare when I told him to shhhh when it came on ...

Hi Garry, thanks for your comments. Yes I worked at Granada TV in the Network Control Room (NCR as it was known). I do not know how often it was played but as you know, TV closed down in those days. Our shift would finish as 1AM midweek and 2AM on Friday and Saturday. That would mean that transmission had to have ceased by quarter to 1 or 2 to allow us workers a quarter hour to switch every thing off, and then be able to be on our way out by the 1 AM or 2 AM, which was an absolute deadline. Any over-run by even 1 second would incur a penalty payment to all the staff still on duty of 1/4 hours pay but as it was after midnight that 1/4 hour would be multiplied by the enhanced hourly rate for working after midnight. It was 1/4 hours extra pay for 1 second up to 15 minutes not 1/4 hour pay per second !! An over-run was not a common occurrence unless it was election night when over-runs waiting for election results may cause an over-run. I do not think it was played as regular as you imply, as, if my memory serves, the tunes would be changed on a semi-regular basis. The presentation and record departments would have selected the records to be used. As an engineer I was only responsible for ensuring technical quality of any incoming and outgoing feeds or programmes. I loved this track and found the record is a local Manchester store at a bargain price at the time. It's great that you have spoken to Mae and I hope she is happy for the track to remain on RU-vid. RU-vid have not contacted me about any copyright problems, possibly because it is such an old track the the auto' system doesn't recognise it. I would be happy to upload the rest of the Album if Mae would like me to do so, if you are still in contact with her. All the best.

@@briancollison5319 Hi Brian...thanks for replying. I have no doubt in my mind now that you are correct about the frequency that this was played. I think it was pure chance then that I seem to hear it on a certain night. It was always after I had come home from my girlfriend's. It was the first time I ever seriously said to my dad to shh... my dad...ex soldier...took no cra+ at all lol. I realised as I said it...fortunately, even my sister looked a bit startled... but then grinned knowing I was in the mire and would likely cop for something. My dad did listen and nothing else was said. Oh don't get me wrong I did backchat my dad all the time...messing about... and usually paid the price...all fun. This time though I'd overstepped the mark and interrupted/shouted over him telling my mum something. Anyway, he seemed to understand why, and all was well and he also then had a song he thought was great! Yep, however, I still got a dig in my arm a few days later...my dad reminded me what it was for ha ha. He liked to let you think you were all clear and safe...then get you...as I say it was also a lot of fun... after all, winding up your dad is what teenagers are all about. 🤣 As for the finishing work and payments you mentioned... ha ha I remember something similar when I was working at Soreen. Bakers had a Union and if your shift broke into time and a half or double time...then ALL the hours you worked in that shift day were at the premium rate...not just those that went over into that extra time as it were. Anyway, I now have this version on my p.c., my phone, in my car and on thumb drives or whatever. So if RU-vid does get funny...I'm fine. Thanks for the offer about the LP... I have it, bought it from an LP company in Holland... and as I said it cost me far more than you paid for it. I also had it transposed(?) onto a cd too...that cost about £20 too. BUT WORTH IT LOL! I have contacted Mae to ask whether she did get in touch with Mr. Mike Moran, or found her recording of the TV arrangement Mike did of this. Hopefully, she will reply soon. I just do not want to be a pest. I may also try and contact Mr. Moran directly. I hope he doesn't think it rude or cheeky, and see if he's got/willing to let the track he arranged to go out as it were. Fingers crossed. I'll let you know if I get any success. Thanks again Brian for replying, it was genuinely nice of you. A rare thing on the internet. But much appreciated. All the best to you too.

It was at close down time. Not every night so possibly you just didn't happen to hear it. There was a conversation on the FB Granada TV Reunion page

I have to be honest, I much preferred the version that was used as a closing down song on Granada than this one, it was a much simpler arrangement, with just her voice and a beautiful electric piano accompanying her , I don’t suppose that version is out there somewhere is it ?

I spoke to Mae when searching for this. I too remember it from the closing music. Mike Moran did the arrangement for that. It is around...but I think there is an issue over releasing it/publishing it. Argument over rights? I don't want to pester them... I will try to find out if it is possible to get a copy of the recording/arrangment. But keep hoping...it does exist.
