I've recently bought a 1988 Maestro City X which had been off the road since 2008. I'm looking forward to having my first drive in it tomorrow after it surprisingly passed it's first MOT in 14 years last week.

Good for you Tom, you’re just right. The simplicity is a pleasant change and certainly makes journeys interesting! Agree that it’s frustrating those that belittle anything other than an escort. The classic scene is about so much more, and I think us young drivers of classic cars are able to appreciate these lesser known cars.

I had a friend who did the similar thing nearly 40 years ago, he had a Morris Traveller and a Morris Van "Minor" when people were driving Ford Escorts and MK1 Vauxhall Astras. It's nothing new, and he had the same reaction in the 1980's. Great to see you still don't have to follow the crowd.

My Kia Rio MK2 is considered a cheap crap modern car. Much unloved like the Maestro of it time. When I got my first Rio I thought it would be cheap and nasty as a runabout. I was pleasantly surprised how good it was. I went on to owning four of them, like I did with the Maestro's. Rio won't win any awards for being the best car, it sure is one of the most simplistic and reliable little cars I've owned a long side my love for the maestro.

Your videos are getting really good now. The cut away editing is classy and your insights are really interesting. Started watching your channel as a rover 800 owner but now want a Maestro!

Yep, Maestros are just great at being A Car. Nowt fancy, just enough to do a job and do it right. Like yourself, I've found the Maestro/Montego community to be very supportive and welcoming, especially so recently. That grille on your car was in my very hands, and it's great to see it on a car that deserves it. Really happy to see you got some proper wheel trims too, you did right binning those aftermarket ones it came to you on. Keep up the good work!

I loved my Maestro. It was a dark green MG and I ende dup being given a vanden plas which i swapped the interior over for as my MG seats were pretty raggy. I know you had to sell her but the guy is now restoring her and doing a good job of it.

The Maestro was always the underdog and was often overlooked. I had a lot of underdog cars in my youth (they were cheaper) and my second car was a talking MG Maestro 1600. I loved it! Still think the MG looked way sharper than a Mk3 escort XR3, but even a less posh one looks a cleaner design to me than an Escort from the same era, especially the front. And they are bigger and more practical too, and did I say mine talked and had a digital speedo! What's not to love?

It was the Allegro that set the path for the negative comments! After the success of the ADO16 in the 60's and 70's the Allegro was disappointing to many!

Had a few Maestros and Montego's over the last 10years and what great underrated cars they are. Your Maestro looks very clean and as you say a great retro classic. Sadly i have found the opposite with the Austin rover community and it rather spoiled my ownership experience.

I'd say the Starlet community is also similar, bought one last year just to get to work etc and they're extremely reliable, cheap and easy to repair and the community on forums and facebook groups is good

I have to admit I nearly avoided buying my P38 due to the horrendous reputation. My 1996 4.6 V8 is the most reliable car I have ever owned. I take her off road, up the motorway, and often use her as my daily drive. The air works perfect, the aircon is fine, the engine gives me 18mpg....

I’ve heard a lot of bad things about those but it still hasn’t put me off possibly getting one in the future. I think if it’s treated right, it’ll go right

I bought mine as an MOT failure that had been sat in a field for 2 years. I'm by no means a mechanic, but with some help from a friend I replaced all the ball joints, drop links, panhard and other bushes, plus new brake lines, pads and discs.. cost £300 in parts, 4 weekends to fit.. then a clean MOT pass. If I can do it, anybody can. That was a year ago, and Pauline has been faultless since. She drives beautifully, and is simply amazing green laning. I love her.

My 'highly unreliable' P38 has been in daily service for four years now. Prior to that I had a Rover 75, one of the best daily drivers I have ever owned. Also had my parents old Meastro 1.3 HL (I think) for a couple of years in the late 90's early 2000's. It had the earlier dash (which I preferred to be honest) and was hanging and very unfashionable. I gave it death and it kept coming back for more. One of the cars from my past that sticks out in the memory banks.

@@Auto-TaT I've got my P38 V8, a ZT cdti, and a Disco 2 TD5 and I have to say the worst in the fleet is the ZT, but that is down to rattles inside, reliability she is fine. The most unreliable car I've had was a ST Mondeo...

You have a Fiat Coupe 20v? You have a good taste in cars sir. The thing is, the Maestro something different, you don't see many of them on the roads anymore so those that are driving about, are looked after, they're driven because the owners love them and want to keep them on the road. Take that Porsche for example, "ooh look at that" would be exactly my disinterested reaction, it's a Porsche, it looks like every other Porsche and in my eyes utterly unremarkable, if you have the money you can go out and buy a brand new one, so what. The Maestro takes love and work to keep on the road. Sometimes you can be happier with less. I drive old cars, some of which quite a lot of people would look down on, like my Citroen XM. I don't care though, it's a quirky little 80's angular wedge of nostalgia with the smoothest ride of any car and a million little "quirks and features" Ignore the haters, one day they might understand.

yes I've had a Fiat Coupe for a while, first "project" I ever took on, it's sat in my garage now had new paint etc the works, amazing car. I agree with you, also the XM is a very underrated car, love it.

If this vehicle was as bad as people say, why did this example survive? People today are stupid: this car brings a smile to your face, you like it, a lot! The hell what people think! And I must say the countryside is stunning, like our of Emmerdale!
