In this video I pick up my new daily drive a 1986 Austin Maestro 1.3L leaking coolant all the way home and an exhaust held on with a shoe string (literally) will it get me home?
This is the start of a bangernomics/project series so enjoy, I'll be using this car daily so it better get me home.

That's in really decent shape for it's age, I used to see these around as a kid and most were worse than this 20 years ago!

My friend had a 2 litre EFI many moons ago, and it went like stink. I still think these cars still look great today. Considering how quickly they rot yours appears to be in really good condition and is worth saving. It's always great to see old cars like this still on the road👍👍👍

I might end up getting an MG eventually if I carry on liking this one as much as I do. Underneath of it is good too, not any “proper” rot at all

Nice car. Things that are bound to break: outer door handles, seat belt clasps, rest of car were very reliable and much better than people say.

I own a Maestro, I've owned a few in the past too. Great to see someone else recently show some love for these cars.

Thanks dude, I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I do but it’s a great car. Hopefully this series of videos educates people a bit better on them, my ownership has changed my opinion

@@tomdrives thats a very clean 1.3L you have there. Absolute bargain at the price you paid. So congratulations on your purchase. They are very reliable cars, with some character. The trusted A+ series engine is easy to work on. The only problem I find with my maestro is sourcing parts. Not sure where you might get a headlining board from. You might have to custom make one. They tend to sag, mine did but I removed it in original material. I am looking forward to your videos on this car, great to see what you do with it 😀

I regularly had 80 (allegedly) out of my Maestro Vanden Plas, and I regularly used to get overtaken on my way to work at 2am by a Maestro turbo diesel being driven like the hounds of hell were on his heels. They're really not desperately slow, and they used to be very popular with fleets back in the day...

Passed my driving test in of these in 1992. Really nice car to drive, nice airy interior and practical. The switch gear and the dash clocks look exactly the same as the one in my 84 Austin Metro 1 litre L, memories............

It's the car that replaced the ADO16 and Allegro. Your radio and rear spoiler are both non original but definitely from the 80's period. They were quite a reliable exceptable car in their day. The only thing I wasn't happy with, the brilliant A-series + engine was turned around from its normal position like in a classic Mini. It just made the engine hard to work on! I so much wanted it to be the other way!

I had a brief drive of the Vanden Plas version it was very smooth, refined and well made. It had lots of chrome and leather. M.

I had a Maestro 1.3 HLE in the late 1990s. Not a hugely dynamic car but I bought it cheap at an auction and it did what I needed it to. Good to see one still on the road.

Looks like a period aftermarket stereo fitted. Very similar to the one I put in my 1982 Morris Ital, back in 1988.

Looks in Great Condition for the year, as you say a few rusty bits but they will scrub up nice once treated. Great find to say you bought if for under a grand usually Maestros now are well into 4 Figures

Thats in amazing condition for a 35 year old car - let alone a Maestro. With some tlc it can returned in to an extremely tidy example. Heater matrix is a dash out job - not hugely complicated. 👍👍

That spoiler looks like the one that came on the MG variants as you said - the side strakes (but not the spoiler itself) were also standard on the HLE models I think.

Fantastic Maestro - they weren’t nearly as naff as history tends to make out, and at launch, although the design was already 5 years old, they were quite cutting edge - for a short while! They were however, quite well engineered cars, with good ride and handling, as reported in a Car magazine group test between a Maestro, a Renault 11, a Golf, Astra and mk3 Escort.

My Maestro, bought as a stopgap car in the early 2000s, simply dissolved. Masses of space, decent handling and economy. If only they'd been built from better quality materials, not tinfoil...

That's not the original stereo I'm afraid. I had a 1.6 Auto B reg back in 1990.. very practical and spacious cars. Great find in very good condition congrats

Lovely car! 🥰 I own a 1989 Maestro 1.6 Maestro and i’ve had it almost 5 years now. Its currently away having brand new rear wheel arches welded in then I need to replace the heater matrix coolant metal pipe as mines weeping coolant into the passengers footwell. Join up these two if you can on Facebook ☺️ Maestro,Metro,Montego appreciation page Maestro & Montego enthusiasts page All the best and enjoy! 😁
