This is a great idea to interview composers. This should be picked up by others too.

Wait...powerhouse Texas band programs? I'm sorry, but powerhouse nothing. For all music people telling everyone "you can pick up an instrument any time in your life! You should do it!" When I moved here from CA and wanted to get back into music, playing Tuba, and tried to join a beginning instrument class in the community college (because while I know how, it's been a while so to not overly inconvenience an already-practiced group, I need to go back into it from the beginning and this would be the best way to do it)....much to my dismay I was told "oh, we don't have those here, if you want to learn an instrument, there are some private tutors we can refer you to." The floored me. Back in CA, I could go to just about any community college in SoCal (we didn't have "county residency" requirements like strangely so many Texas Community Colleges do here in D/FW) and join a beginning instruments class with my own instrument. But here in North Texas? If you didn't grow up here and weren't 'fortunate' enough to get into this supposedly, "powerhouse band program," you're flippin' screwed. Sufficed to say, I was so turned off by the utterly dismissive and flippant response I got from people who otherwise claim to promote learning music and instruments to everyone, not just children, I've not bothered to pick my instrument back up.
