This is an analysis of Mafia which doesn't take a look at it's story - so outside of showing lategame gameplay, it doesn't have any story spoilers.
I didn't know what to call this video, so if anyone thinks of a better title leave it as a comment

Hey lads I'm getting a few "you're just blinded by nostalgia" comments lately so I just wanna say I first played this on Steam in December of 2010, after Mafia 2's release and over 8 years after the initial release. It's still one of my favourite games :)

I was 2 years old when this game released and I first played it when I was 17. So the "blinded by nostalgia" comments make no valid argument

The gunplay is only hard if you grew up with games that were made after 2007 or so. Games that are easy and hold your hand. It's challenging and really awesome. I never did that look around corner camera 'trick' because the game was alright as it was. It takes a little getting used to but it's a perfect challenge

When this game has came out, I was only 18. This game made GTA 3 look like a paper. Graphics, atmosphere and the dark, depressed feeling this game gave you is priceless. Mafia 2 didn't have that dark and depressed feeling. I'm not saying It's a bad game but Mafia The City of Lost Heaven is better. It's more realistic.

It ages really badly, mechanics wise, if it's so realistic, why can't my car that's going 100kph knock over a light pole? The controls are wonky at best and the shooting tries to be realistic but falls flat on its face. Overall it IS a good game, just one I could not bring myself to complete.

Yeah and even developers said they never knew about GTA 3. They loved GTA 1 and 2 and so they told themselfs let's do a gangster game but in 3D. The first time they saw the GTA 3 was like 3 months before its release. Maybe if Mafia came first everybody would compare the GTA to the Mafia and not Mafia to GTA. Second and third game was developed under 2K publisher so investors pushed developers to make it more like GTA and it wasn't a Mafia since.

An absolute masterpiece. Easily, by far and away, the best Mafia game of the 3. I thought the combat was great, particularly when you are driving. Cops and gangsters on your tail and you and your boys firing out the window at other cars, watching them spin out of control when you hit their tires or panic when their driver is hit. Very exhilarating stuff in that game, and the missions are nearly all brilliant. Apart from that damn race of course...

Nice review! I actually loved the vehicle physics in Mafia. Sure they're slow and heavy, but they're so detailed that different cars actually *feel* different to drive - not just in terms of speed but also because of suspension, brakes, size and weight... A massive, softly sprung V16 Cadillac feels completely different to a wobbly little Model T with atrocious brakes, which is different again to any of the sports cars. It was detailed enough that you could feel the steady improvements as newer cars became available, in a way that reminds me of the Evolution mode from Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. This is no small feat in a non-sim driving game. That level of depth keeps me engaged way longer than the kind of easy, arcadey physics people wished for in its place. And it's worth noting that the dynamic 'deformation' style vehicle damage mechanic in Mafia was ahead of its time. GTA only finally caught up with GTA 4, 6 years later. Speaking of GTA 4, that's the only non-racing game I've played to equal Mafia in terms of satisfyingly detailed, weighty vehicle physics, and a lot of people hated on that too for it, go figure.

If you want to get some of that experience back again, a sort of demo of how Mafia 4 could look & play like in 2019, get the BeamNG game, download Mafia 1 map mod, spawn in one of the classic 50s/60s cars and just enjoy. Play with a wheel for maximum effect. Been playing that for the past few weeks. It's amazing, but also kinda sad as it reminds me of where we could be in 2019 with games had we taken a different path since the release of Mafia 1. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CkLHOm9DvR0.html the only video I could find.

Heyy, I was just made aware of this post by a friendly redditor (I wrote the post you refer to in the video). Truth is, I misworded my complaint about the non-existent "cover system" and additionally, I came to respect the game's realistic ambitions in the 2 years that passed by, and though I still don't think the game did a very good job with sticking to and executing on them, and though I generally don't get much of a kick out of realism in general (in literature as well as videogames) I quite loved your fair analysis and explanation for why you love it as you do. Thank you for your rebuttal, I came out of it respecting the game a bit more and remembering more of the good things about it instead of the bugs I was unfortunate enough to encounter. All the best :) PS. I seem to have missed the comment you wrote on the post back then, to this day I'm not very competent when it comes to navigating Reddit and managing notifications. Great review. First played this game in 2007. Most of my nostalgia is from ~2010-2011 though. This game's community used to be amazing, sadly it's mostly gone now. I remember the hype and subsequent disappointment at Mafia 2. Great times. I've also played through the game 5-6 times, but before 2013 or so I played the missions individually, without playing the game through wholly. If I count every mission seperately, then the completion number is definitely 10-20. You failed to mention Freeride Extreme, which I think is a great addition to the base game. It focuses on the driving part, and not the shooting. By completing submissions, you unlock prototypes, which are really fun cars. Great for stunting aswell. Also, I noticed you have flashing shadows. This is a problem on modern systems, which is fixed by using a program known as 3dAnalyzer. Apparently changing some settings in the setup works aswell but it didn't work for me.

@minimme 7 лет назад
Thankyou! I've also played through it a whole bunch of times too, it's such a fantastic game. The first time I finished it, I immediately started a new game and played through it again haha. And Mafia 2 doesn't even come close to scratching the same itch. I replayed 2 recently for an upcoming video and it's still pretty bad, though it seems to have a cult following of sorts. I regret forgetting to mention Free Ride Extreme, though I wasn't much of a fan of it. The flashing shadows thing you'll notice is only from footage of early game, I found that 3D analyzer program after getting fed up with it :P

I wouldn't consider Mafia 2 bad, I still liked it a lot, but it just wasn't as good. FRE is ridiculously hard at parts, and on modern systems requires limiting the frames on 2 submissions to make it bearable. I still haven't finished every submission.

I love this game and get awfully frustrated on how people don't give it a chance, I remember playing it right after GTA: San Andreas, which mecanically is the most advanced from the GTA 3 engine and the most impressive (it's my favorite from the 3 certainly), but after playing through Mafia I remember being puzzled why it was so ignored (well, the BEAST of a PC required on launch may have something to do with it), but now I get it. One thing that I think that was "missing" from this review was the how the basic systems of the game have a heavy learning curve in which you'll eventually get almost to the level of play of something like GTA, it gives you perspective of being a lowlife rising up to being an agent of the player's will, which most games will give you straight away. It's true in the beggining that moving around town is mostly a chore as you're a lowly mafioso, but as you rise through the ranks and the skill level you'll be driving almost like in GTA by the end (the Silver Arrow is a beast, fuck speed limits) which, to me, is why the gameplay and not giving a fuck is SO ENJOYABLE. One thing about the gunplay which I thinks is heavily forgotten is how diverse and enjoyable are the setpieces in which the firefights take place and while mechanically dated as fuck, even to the time, I really felt engrossed by fighting through the traps you'll have to face as a rising thug, the robbery and the last stand at the end of the game has a sublime background, worthy of a good mafia movie.

I remember there was a 70's mod in development for Mafia which had some great car models and an incredible-looking model of a Pan-Am airliner landing at the airport (it had onboard lights that realistically lit the tail, wings and interior for night landings). I don't think map editing was possible, though, so they couldn't update the city, just retexture parts of it. Also apparently the physics model, while good, was tailored for 1930's cars. If they tried to "realistically" make a rear wheel drive 400bhp muscle car it was uncontrollable.
@JAnx01
@JAnx01 5 лет назад
Did people really whine about driving? And praise GTA's one-dimensional Go-cart driving where every car handled exactly the same as an example of doing things right? This is absolutely nuts!! Where do I even start? 1. While there are slow cars in Mafia, like the Ford Model T, you will learn to avoid them. Likewise you also need to learn which the decent ones are and they are always available in the streets. It's called a challenge. Faster and more special cars can be gained through side missions. 2. Speeding and escaping police was possible and a huge fun. You just had to trick them into making a mistake. 3. The difference between modern and old cars is that modern cars have higher limits of grip are safer. Therefore, from the perspective of a video game, old car can be more fun most of the time, because you don't need be driving at ridiculous speed to worry about stability. In Mafia, you have to balance the car with throttle and steering inputs. You can hit a curb and spin out. You can die in crash. Where in GTA3 do you have such sophisticated mechanics? You could drive crash multiple times and take no damage. All vehicles in GTA3 had the same health, regardless of size, it was all dumbed down as fuck compared to Mafia. TL;DL: Claiming that Mafia's driving wasn't fun is a mental illness occurring in casual wankers who prefer 'gamey' mechanics and handholding over authenticity, not legitimate criticism.

that Racing Mission which was a huge pain in the ass was a great lesson to me somehow. it taught me that when things get stuck I have to open my fucking mind and solve the problem instead of just getting angry. I realized you just have to not use Accelerate when you're Cornering, as long as you brake and then Corner and after you're done steering you start accelerating you won't drift around, problem was when you use acceleration while you're cornering or steering your car would circle around and that's all you had to do to pass the mission, only use accelerate when you're not steering around.

mafia has a great story, amazing graphics for the time and propably the best driving physics ever in this genre. its also pretty challenging (well atleast if you havent played through it 6 times like me) and it has great authentic feeling weapons. easily the best in the mafia series and it gets higher and higher in my personal "best games list" over the years. also what i forget is you basically MUST use the manual transmission - atleast in the earlier years because if you dont the cars are too slow and it just makes much more fun to shift, i mean in what other open world game can you do that? its awesome!

One of my favorite gaming moments happened in this game years ago. Swinging the hunk of metal vehicle through the streets to escape a rival gang in pursuit . We drove into an underground tunnel and they pit maneuvered me almost perfectly. My car flew up onto the center rail and began to grind along it sideways, only the front wheels on the ground with the enemy vehicle pushing me along. We smashed into a concrete barrier at the other end of the tunnel, when my car stopped spinning I get out and draw my tommy gun only to find that the Mafiosa in the enemy vehicle are dead and their vehicle is just sat there busted with smoke pouring out of it. my vehicle is now back on the road and I drive off in a beaten up but still barely working car. It was such a cool moment, straight out of a movie.

Shame I can't find any mention of side missions in any review. They were fun as hell. After mission you just went to Lucas and he gave you tip how to steal new better car, that you could use in next mission. Also extreme ride was very good. When I played Mafia II it felt empty. There were two guys with potential, but there weren't any missions for them. (Maybe one? I didn't go there after every mission, but every time I did, he said there's nothing for me right now.)

Agree with you ;) Mafia 2 felt so emty after Mafia 1, but Mafia 3 was disaster, they ruined mafia game series for me. But this dude didnt even mension a free ride mode after the story was finished. You could do some tasks and missions in a exchange for hot rod cars, and put them all in your safe house jard, and after getting all those hot rods, the jard was full with fast and crazy cars.....ahhh it was great times in mafia 1. I dont understand why this dude said that there are no roads out of the city, but there was. After finishing story mode and unlocking all hot rod cars, in a free ride there was so many country roads outside lost heaven!!!!!! I loved the concept in mafia 1 where you were able to park all stolen cars in a parking space behinde bar, it was such a feeling, that there was so many exclusive cars in one place, not like mafia 2 and 3.....on small garage and just scroll down to look at them - so stupid. Hope some day there will be another game like Mafia 1 :(

The first mafia still remains as my most favourite game. Still have it installed on my computer. My first play through in 2003 must have been at 25 fps in open areas with how damanding the game was. It was sooo far ahead of its time. I know people were disappointed in mafia 3 but even mafia 2 can't hold a handle to the first one. Love everything about it. The driving, the firefights. One of the reasons people dislike it is because they got to experience the console version which were atrocious in execution. The ai was amazing for the time. The cops wouldn't just shoot on sight. They would exit their cars and chase you on foot and then hijack a nearby car to keep chasing behind the wheel. Cars had breakable windshields, tires that could be popped or even shot off. In fact you could even puncture the gas tank and the car wouldn't explode but start leaking gas. The game still has features that modern games simply do not have. I love those firefight still. They feel awesome and a cover system is completely unnecessary. The controls are catered to a keyboard and mouse and feel great. Cops can be avoided by a quick glance on the minimap after some practice. I don't think I ever follow the speed limit unless I feel like I want to immerse a bit deeper into the world. I still play this game ocassionaly and the gameplay mechanics don't feel aged at all. I've always preferred realistic games to arcady ones. That is probably a big contributing factor.

If done properly, a Mafia remake with modern graphics and a modern engine would be phenomenal and could maybe even rival RDR 2 in terms of detail. They could expand on the vehicles, weapons, and soundtrack. And they could add side missions/activities, street racing, gambling, diners/restaurants, bars/nightclubs, barber shops, clothing shops, and pretty much anything else that would really bring the map to life and give the players plenty to do outside of the main story.

Mafia 2 did many of the same things, the way you describe this game as an immersive, realistic experience that goes out of it's way to make a believable world... Totally applies to the second game. This is why I hated Mafia 3, because they didn't try to make a believable city and a realistic story that immersed you in the setting... They just told a generic revenge story in a generic open world city, without any of the little details that made the first two games so memorable. Mafia and Mafia 2 are two of the most legendary open world games I've played, in my opinion they deserve a spot alongside Red Dead and Grand Theft Auto... Mafia 3 will be lucky if people list it as one of the most disappointing sequels.

A story about my Mafia 1 gameplay: I played the game for the first time a couple of years ago (2016 maybe). What made me interested in this game was the 1930-1940's feel. I really wanted to experience that so I started to play this. So when I had completed around 70-80% of the storyline my elder brother came from college. He said he wanted to play a game with better animation so we started Mafia 2, what could go wrong? 🤷‍♂️ So by now I was totally invested in Tommy Angelo (because well, the story and character development is awesome) when I started playing Mafia 2. So here comes a mission in Mafia 2 "Stairway to Heaven". I drive to the destination, we see an old man watering his garden. Then suddenly Vito said, "Mr. Angelo, Mr Salieri sends his regards". I fucking cried at that moment, I was still playing Tommy in Mafia 1 and was still attached to him. I hadn't even got my closure yet. And Vito fucking killed him. I immediately closed the game and sat on my chair frozen stiff. I had just killed myself.

I think one of my favorite unsung features was how it handled navigation. Having directions pop up like street signs was such a good design decision. (I only played the Remastered version, so not sure if that was in the original) It makes no sense to me that so many developers spend millions building these open worlds, and then 50% of the time you're glancing up at the environment every once and a while and then going back to starting at the mini map.
@MrDoctorColossus
@MrDoctorColossus 6 лет назад
I'm pretty sure you could keep visiting the gun seller you meet in one mission, Yellow Pete or something like that, not Salieri's portly Italian gunsmith but a skinnier old fella with a back alley store, remember? Unless the years are deceiving me, I'm pretty sure he's where you get all your grenades and molotovs. They're def rare drops and/or well hidden in the missions but I believe they were always for sale in any open world portion after the mission where you first meet Yellow Pete or whoever. Unless my memories of Free Ride and the main game are just blurring together, I mean I was like 14.
@MrDoctorColossus
@MrDoctorColossus 6 лет назад
Btw, I loved this game so much as a kid that I infected a friend of mine with my enthusiasm, and together we made a hugely ambitious (for our 14 year old selves) mod designed to spice up the disappointing Free Ride (my whole time thru the game I had assumed Free Ride Extreme would have more than it did). It was called the City of Lost Dreams mod, and PC Gamer actually put it on one of their discs one month, which was awesome. We added stuff like randomized assassinations, street boxing and racing you could either participate in or spectate and bet on, you could call taxis by whistling and pick from a long list of landmarks or addresses as destinations with a makeshift menu system, you could save at phone booths, added a bunch of enterable buildings both from the missions and also from modelers and more advanced coders who over time joined us and made us a little team. Also, various gangs in different regions, for ambient gangfights at the edges of territories, or, say, like, Hoboken was outright hostile in some parts. Was pretty cool, really, getting that whole team together, I still wonder what happened to some of those folks. I tried once to find the mod fairly recently though and all I could find was some incomplete earlier version, which was too bad. Not that it was ever complete, but I couldn't find the most recent version. Enjoyed the video btw, gotta agree too - what makes it fun is the simulation aspect, the unnecessary level of detail, that's all what did it for me. The whole mod we did was an attempt to preserve that illusion into the lackluster Free Ride mode, based on our mutual disappointment with it.

I donno why all these people wanted Mafia to be like GTA, when I loved how it went the opposite way of GTA. while GTA III was about arcady and fun gameplay, Mafia was about Realism and Simulation style Gameplay. they must have been doing it right since GTA went for that Simulation Gameplay during GTA IV.

Basically the only Mafia review on RU-vid I saw and agree with.

Amazing analysis and I wholeheartedly agree. Mafia was one of my favorite games growing up. No mention of Freeride Extreme feels like a missed opportunity though. Certainly, a much better way to spend time after you've finished the game than the Mafia 2 DLC.

Arguably the best soundtrack of the whole series.

Mafia is an amazing game, I played it when it came out, I was 12 at the time. It still holds up, GTA III on the other hand that it was constantly compared to at the time does not.

Still one of my absolute favorite games. Played it on the original Xbox when i was a kid, later found the PC version. Such a shame that i can't play it anymore because of the SecuRom bullshit.

It bothers me that it used to be on Steam and now it aint, it should be widely available legally

It's now on steam and gog. 15 bucks. I would reccomend getting a physical copy though, since they took out the music. Or if you can, find a way to get it and put the music back in.

That clarinet music, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y0SEHAgXF3U.html I bet anyone who played Mafia remembers this music very well :)

RetroDeath Reviews on the GOG forums there is a method to get the music back in the game. Also goes without saying that a wide screen mod is reciommended. Haven't finished it yet, but a great game so far.

I had to play this game because I had a potato PC and was looking for open world games. I first was playing GTA San Andreas and was amazed by that story, but then I found Mafia. It was probably one of the greatest decisions of my life trying this game out. When I was playing this game I wanted to delete it sometimes, or bang on my table, but at the end of the day I wanted to cry because of how detailed and living the story and characters were. Im getting teary typing this comment lol.

You definitely should make a video on Vietcong, as well. It's an awesome game with realistic mechanics that don't care about the player and the story, while not nearly as deep or intertwined into the gameplay like in Mafia, is still engaging, mostly because of the characters. Though, I have to say that the English voice acting in either game isn't as good as the original, which is a shame.

Vietcong has a very immersive gameplay and original missions. Definitely try it.

I discovered this game studio with hidden & dangerous and was immediately in love with there work. Their attention to details and realism was nowhere found in that time. Back then game studios just went for it being the best. Now everything is just flat commerce. Wether it’s games , music , movies. And on top of that your bombarded with advertisements. All these industries will eventually kill their own businesses because nobody cares anymore about ... call of duty 13 or fifa 25.
