The folks over at Evoluition tools have sent out another great tool for us to test out. This time its a Mag Drill. These things are great when you need the precision of a drill press but in a portable form that can be used at any angle.
My name is John Switzer, I operate Black Bear Forge, a small one person blacksmith shop located in southern Colorado. My current focus is shifting away from commissions and customer orders and towards education through these videos on RU-vid. Thank you for watching

That is one nice little drill ,the last time i used a mag drill i had to use a 1/2 ton block and tackle to lift it onto the 2 inch plt i was drilling. It was so big 3 men could not lift it but that was about 25 years ago ,this new one would be a great tool to add to my workshop so thanks John and evolution for the demo .

For cutting fluid FYI I worked as a fitter in the oilfield for several years building platforms and equipment, we always used a few tablespoons of Dawn dishwashing liquid in a 20 oz. water bottle with a pinhole in the top while using mag drills and annular cutters. Worked fine for me, and it cleans up much easier than oil, plus it smells nice. Worth a try anyway, and about the cheapest "cutting fluid" probably ever. (I always sprayed very liberally unlike with oil where you just use a few drops)

Mag drills are fantastic. When I started construction 40 years ago everything was done with hand drills. Now I have 2 Milwaukee battery powered Mag drills on the job site and my crew gets way more work done in a day. I also have the Evolution Saw they are Fantastic. The Annular cutters are what we use all the time they really cut and last a surprising long time.

I bought the Evolution s380cps chopsaw after watching yours and a few others videos on the Evolution saw and I love using it. I'm now in the middle of fabricating my own welding table / work station and definitely want this drill to make fixture hole's on my 1/2 thick steel top. Told my wife what I want the whole family to buy me for Christmas, this Drill !

The table you've built for the saws looks like it will be a really nice feture in the shop. To the right of the saws there's probably enough space for a really convenient off cuts bucket. I'd think the micro adjust feture on a mag drill would be for when you are working on vertical projects as well as when drilling upside down due to the problems with having to line up your drill bit while holding the full weight of the drill. I really like your tool reviews but they do leave me with the problem that the tool collector in me really wants to go shopping for tools I don't really need as I wouldn't use them enough to be practical. Evolution should really be thinking about becoming a full time sponsor 👍

seems like the adjustable base would be very handy for drilling horizontal or upside down. Be difficult to line up, flip a switch and hold the weight of the drill all at once. Looks like a decent tool though. Thanks for the review.

I've been wanting a mag drill for ages, but they sure are pricey! The mag drill is one of those tools that you don't need often, but when you do need one they are absolutely golden. There are quite a few neat ways to make stands for them, and I like the idea of creating something that'd let you 'turn' tenons for gates and the like. Forging tenons might be fun, but it's time-consuming and you often have to tweak things because you're off a hair or two.
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 4 года назад
So true
@BrianDaleNeeley
@BrianDaleNeeley 4 года назад
Nice tool to have. If I were going to build a stand to make tenons with it as you mentioned, I would consider making a small table that would bolt behind your post vice. If the table your post vice is bolted to has a thick enough top, maybe even thread the holes. I don't think the mag drill would run slow enough to power tap holes, but I have never had to tap a hole, so... But a small table behind the post vice approximately the height of the vice jaws could be useful for other things besides the mag drill.

This drill travel allows you to use a chuck and full length twist drill bit. That is A GAME CHANGER. Most affordable ( for the non pro homeowner shop!) mag drills, when a chuck is installed, leave no room for a full length twist drill. Annular cutters can be used but they don't go smaller than 1/2 inch, so you have to use twist drills for smaller holes. There are adapter kits you can use to eliminate having to use a chuck, but the fact that this drill raises high enough to allow a Jacobs chuck and any short or full length twist drill bit is phenomenal!!!!
@bernardmauge8613

not true they go smaller than 1/2"but they have a tendency to brake if you are not careful when you drill

I was thinking of the BDS 825V mag-drill, but my my they are expensive. Who knows, I should consider this one if the price is right. I do not have space for a drill press so that is why I figured a mag-drill would be the ticket. I just need a jaw/clamp to position under the head for small stuff like tong blanks when I don't want to risk punching them.

very nice but cant go as big as an old radial arm drill press but then again they are usually huge and huge horsepower, but mag drills do come in handy no doubt and can do most size holes we would use today even if you are doing historical machine work for riveting or drill flues for steam boilers like I associate with sometimes. of course for the really big stuff they send to a specialty machine shop, or use a waterjet cutter on a gantry not much you cant cut with those if you have time

If you find yourself wondering where to get a transfer punch like he used, these have worked well for me: www.harborfreight.com/28-piece-transfer-punch-set-3577.html Nothing wrong with using a pencil, but this will find center easier and more accurately, so I reach for them first if I can. I've worn out a set in the past, but cheap enough not to worry about it. I've also used a pencil in the hole to help me find the punch mark faster, but rely on the transfer punch mark for actual drilling. The only limitation for a transfer punch is depth of the reference hole. It's not going to do the job matching holes on thin sheet, but something like these saw bases, or other blind holes, they work a treat. Mag drills are nice, if you deal with large plate goods often enough, but honestly I've never found enough of a need for one to pay what they ask for them. Evolution makes a nice drill for the money, there are others out there that cost a lot more, but they all do the same job, really. I do have their saw, and it is great for when you need a clean accurate angle cut. I hope Evolution continues to give us good tools at a competitive price, and doesn't start cutting corners (no pun intended). They are the new Craftsman IMO, harking back to what Craftsman was in the good old days.
