Despard Gallery is excited to launch our new series of gallery videos for 2022 with an artist interview featuring emerging Tasmanian artist, Maggie Jeffries.
Jeffries had an incredible reception to her inaugural solo exhibition late last year, with a large majority of works being acquired. In this new video, listen to Jeffries reflect on the series of paintings that made up the exhibition, as she explains the background to her personal fascination with botanicals. Jeffries also discusses how her compositions originate from multiple images depicting locations of personal significance from her childhood, collaged together to evoke the complexity of memory.
Jeffries graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts and Fine Arts, majoring in psychology and painting. Since graduating, Jeffries has immersed herself in working alongside and in collaboration with artists with disabilities. This included receiving an artist fellowship in 2020 to work for Creative Growth in California, USA, as well as collaborating with the City of Hobart 2021 Ability to Create annual exhibition in 2021. Jeffries was awarded the ‘People Choice’ at the 2019 Henry Jones Art Prize and more recently, undertook a six week arts residency on King Island.
