Listening to this made me want to just call in to explain how the virus works. I am a neuroscientist and study olfaction. The *reason* it takes 8+ weeks for smell to come back is because that's how long it takes for the new neurons to travel to your nasal epithelium (depending on your age and underlying conditions. Young, healthy individuals 6-8wks). Your nose is the only place that gets neurons for your whole life (because we breathe in all kinds of things that damage the neurons there: smoke, pollution, etc.) Also, losing your sense of smell is brain damage, it's the first part of the brain to go in other degenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's). So losing your sense of smell is very serious and we don't know the long term effects, neurologically. Satiety is not just based on how much you taste something, though it is true that your receptors do "fill up" because smell and taste relies on physical binding of the essential (smelly) compound to a receptor. Think parking spaces in a parking lot. Also there's always room for dessert because the brain solely relies on glucose for energy and dessert is usually sugary. Eating a bunch of sugar is just like a buffet for your brain. The reason covid "goes everywhere" isn't just because some bodies react differently, the virus itself BINDS to receptors in blood vessels. You see symptoms in lungs first because we breathe in droplets. You are breathing in the virus, it latches on to receptors in the blood vessels of your lungs, and it spreads via your blood system. Which, goes everywhere. It's seemingly more severe FASTER in people with underlying conditions because they do not have the immune system to fight back immediately. The virus is able to make more copies of itself, faster, because the immune system isn't able to fight. Diabetes is an immune disorder, because your pancreas islets are targeted and destroyed (in I and II) which then has severe metabolic consequences. I'm not a diabetes specialist, but I did write an R01 on the intersection of diabetes III and new neurons in nasal epithelium. Diabetics also have decreased sense of smell.

Real question, I have barely been able to smell since I was 9 and everytime this is mentioned to any sort of doctor I just get a "huh weird" and they never seem to look into it, essentially is this something I should be worried about?? Sorry about asking this over the internet but I've never seen someone who specializes in this 😅

i feel like at this point most people decided that the pandemic is over. i log onto instagram, tik tok, or youtube and im presented with people at amusement parks, las vegas, hanging out with people they JUST met while wearing no masks, people refusing to wear their masks in certain places etc. and i worry if this is going to worsen after wuhan was trending yesterday on twitter because they were partying. conservatives believe china "played us" and there's no virus completely ignoring the fact that wuhan contained it and it's why people are free now, meanwhile the united states government and people have failed since the very beginning and continue failing today.

Seeing Becky so upset talking her parents really touched me. Like my mom was also in the hospital, the ICU actually, and I was stuck living in another country. Not being able to be with her was absolutely heartbreaking and scary. So I am with Becky, its so upsetting watching people go about their normal lives and not being safe. Agreed!!! It is frustrating to see how clueless and careless people are behaving. Both my parents have passed years ago. But after my Dad had a stroke I was living across the country. I didn’t have the ability to just jump in the car and see him in less then a hour. Finally a week later I was able to arrange 4 days off to jump on a plane to see him. And thank God I did. He was lucid for the first time since the stroke. I spent the 2 and a half days by his side talking to him and telling him how much I loved and appreciated him and all he had done for our family. And a month later my step mom called to say he was getting worse and to hurry if I was gonna come before he passed. I left and was on a plane 2 hours later. And I got there a half hour before he passed. So I was able to spend his last 30 minutes with him before he died. And I’m so thankful I was.

I'm here in TX and I still have coworkers who say "well everyone's gonna die at some point, so just open everything up and let nature do its thing!" I have to keep my mouth FIRMLY shut or I'd go off on them. It blows my mind how apathetic people are. Like, they're so distanced from the situation that they feel normal enough to say it's fake or dumb or whatever... my cousin is immunocompromised with heart problems, and he had a covid scare. His wife was terrified, rightly so. We need more empathy and compassion, not only to get through this but in general too.

I've heard a variation on that and it's basically "I don't fear dying because I trust in God. If he determines it's your time, it's your time." Which sounds fine, right? Well it would be...except notice I said "your" not "my". That was on purpose because so many people are apparently not content to use that reasoning when it comes to their own mortality, but to everyone else's too! They use it as an excuse not to wear masks and socially distance. They believe in an afterlife so they don't care if they die, and believe that everyone else will too so they don't have to care if anyone else gets infected. It's, honestly, really given me an irrational hatred of religious people. They don't respect that there are some people out there who are not ready to die right now and want to avoid covid, and don't think that they need to! And that's just so...enraging! It's one thing to be in a death cult yourself, but it's quite another to decide that everyone else has to be! And if you're offended by me calling religion a death cult...well too bad! I'm offended by you deciding that I have to be okay with dying tomorrow just because you believe in heaven! Particularly since the reason you've decided I have to be okay with that is because you'd literally rather risk death than wear a mask while grocery shopping!

it's sad that there are still people who think this virus isn't real. i remember when all 8 of us here in our home got covid back in june, and had it for a month and half. my mom and dad are frontliners, and it sucks that frontliners aren't prioritized here in the Philippines. when the 8 of us were quarantining in our house, it sucked to see people in our area go out without masks, they were running around and laughing while my whole family and i are stuck inside, social distancing, wearing a mask. we disinfect every night, we do the laundry everyday, and it sucked even more because our grandparents were being paranoid, and i can't blame them because they were used to walk around the house but then they were suddenly stuffed in a room doing nothing... my mom told me she cried because she was the first one declared as positive and she felt like she brought it in our house. and idk, it just sucks. i hope this will all be over soon. i hope the philippines will prioritize healthcare for all of its citizens first, rather than focusing on other things. #JunkTerrorLaw

This whole podcast was a MOOD. I had COVID early, I got it from my mom (who I was quarantining with) who got it the last day her school did in person class (so like really early) and my mom luckily got tested. My doctor told me I couldn’t get tested but that I had it. I was out of commission for 2+ weeks. It was miserable, like I had never been that sick. Both of my mom’s living aunts got COVID and died. THEN A FEW WEEKS AGO MY COWORKER HAD THE EFFIN NERVE TO TELL ME IT WASNT REAL. Let’s just say I went off on him... I also second Becky’s statement about adopting a cat, my little Bella cat literally was my main form of entertainment when I had COVID. She makes quarantine so much better.

Like, what benefit would a government have by cutting off it's economy? Yeah, that's so totally helpful. My grandma tested positive for covid back in April (thank God she's fine now) she was admitted for pneumonia and stayed in the hospital for a week. The swab result came after 3 freaking weeks. (This was in the Philippines btw) by that time my grandpa, mom, dad and uncle were exposed to her... my mom showed symptoms but was never tested. They were considered positive and was quarantined. My grandma tested positive 3 more times after that (this time she was asymptomatic)before she became negative and this was happening while my siblings and I were here stuck in dubai (we work here) and flights are getting cancelled left and right. Zoom meetings with them are everyday until now, but the fear or re infection is crazy still because we still don't know enough. I'm also a nurse and my sister is also a high risk so I take a shower the moment I get back from the hospital. Scrubs are left in the hospital. I disinfect everything I touched like some sort of OCD. Maggie got at something important when she mentioned her friends mistakingly thinking losing your sense of taste would cure binge eating disorder. Binging isn't just about the food tasting good. A few bites is enough to get the taste, and, really you kind of tune out the taste after the first few bites...that's why you need more and more to get the same effect the longer you're a binge eater. It's classic tolerance. It's not about the food being 'too good', it's the seritonin hit you get in your brain from eating a lot of high carb food. Notice no one ever binges on broccoli? That isn't because 'broccoli is yucky', I actually like broccoli. Never binge on it though. Most people don't even binge on meat or fish (unless it's accompanied by a carb such as a breading or a pasta). Because it's low in carbs so it doesn't trigger that seritonin high, so you don't want more more more.

Oof, when Becky talked about her parents. 😭My grandmother in S. Korea got diagnosed with Alzheimers in January. And we keep waiting and waiting for it to be safe enough for my mom to travel without having to do so much quarantining bc she’s self employed. It’s frustrated to see everyone partying and throwing a fit about this virus because not only are people getting sick and dying, families are being separated for so so long. There’s too much to lose and everyone’s being so selfish and it’s so very disheartening.

"everyone's dealing with covid better than america." may i present to you: indonesia. with cheap flights and hotel deals, rapid tests (a.k.a those test kits from early covid days who were deemed unreliable) being used as VALID proof of someone being positive or not, and where quarantine was never done properly. as someone who comes from a very health-aware family (my parents are dentists), it's just frustrating to see and hear stories of how people are not taking it seriously or thinking "oh we just have to deal with it." my mom had breast cancer and is still under treatment, i live with my grandparents who are well over their seventies and have chronic health issues. sure, i'm young and have no health problems, but i have a whole family to protect. to anyone that sees this, i wish your families stay safe and please don't go outside if you don't have to, wear a mask even if you do, wash your hands and sanitize properly. covid is not political propaganda, it is a real virus that may not affect you personally, but that may not be the case for the people you love and care about.

Same in Nepal, we were already prepared for 4th phase of end of lockdown but here we are with 1000+ cases each day. PCR has been like businesses to the medical field as they are earning heaps from the PCR, even if the patient isn't suffering from the disease, the result is corona positive. If you have a leg pain, you get corona after routine test, pain in the eye BOOM YOU'VE THE RONA, even if your ass itches you have the virus.

My gran says she’s “not a believer” meaning she believes it exists but thinks it’s the same as a normal flu. She still wears a mask on public transport (though not so much in shops unfortunately) and washes her hands etc because she knows I worry about her (I live with her) but it’s so frustrating being unable to explain to her how serious it is and that she is at risk. She’s not exactly going to big parties or doing anything reckless but anytime I try to remind her to be careful she gets really cross and one of us gets upset. The guilt thing is real. My job has been hit with multiple cases in waves. During the first wave my lab partner and I were exposed to multiple people that were positive for 12+ hours during one shift. My work delayed calling us to tell us for 4 days ( which resulted in me having a less than professional "discussion" with H.R and my department lead). It was actually one of the positive co-workers who called me first, absolutely distraught because he felt like he basically killed me. After other calls from the county health and sheriff's departments my guilt set in. I have a high risk person at home. The thought that I may have brought death to our home made me want to cry. Until I got that negative result back I couldn't sleep,it felt like I had a huge weight on my chest. I developed an ulcer from stress, the whole ordeal wasn't pleasant to say the least.

I'm in France and we're not on lockdown anymore, but cases are starting to rise up again. I have been camping with my grandparents for the past 2 months, and it was actually fine and pretty safe until some of my family joined us. They only took the minimal precautions and decided that the whole situation has "lasted long enough" and that they deserved a "relaxing vacation". That included going almost every day to crowded touristic or shopping places, inviting more people to visit us and hugging/kissing people to say hello. This also meant they didn't observe strict precautions prior visiting us. Of course I stood up to say it was irresponsible behavior, especially when visiting 3 at risk people. But suddenly I was the "crazy hysterical bitch" ruining everyone's vacation by over reacting. I did not let go of it and after a huge argument we parted ways, each household staying at it's own spot and not doing meals or activities all together. I know I was right to require my family to respect the safety precautions we've set for the past 2 months at the expense of their own little personal comfort (like, yeah it's annoying to plan the meals of the entire week to send only one person on a big shopping spree once instead of strolling the farmer's market every day all together, but cutting drastically the risks of my grand parents potentially dying is way more worthy than this little pleasure), but it's been difficult to deal with the guilt of making my grand parents sad because yeah, I killed the "fun carefree" mood of the family reunion. So it's comforting to see people like you actually caring, and willing to put the effort in for the sake of the health of other people, and I wish more people in my family were as responsible because my mind would be much more at ease if I knew I could trust them on that.

@pauline ala Im going through the same thing with my gran rn. I started living with her as the pandemic started so she wouldnt be alone, since my mum still has to work. Its v difficult and frustrating to have these conversations where especially an at high risk person is being ignorant to their risk. People over here in germany are really starting to be desensitized to the safety measures, so its even more frustrating if other ppl dont even bother keep their 6 ft distance from a 90yo lady at the grocery store when im trying to teach and remind her wash her hands, stay 6ft apart, wear a mask, etc. My mum is yoyo-ing between taking massive precautions and none at all and started taking my gran to get the groceries which in my book is just highly unnecessary for her to be exposed to other people at the grocery store. And i am def the "annoying crazy hysterical bitch" in my family. And its hella exhausting to preach to your own family and adults who should know better. But I'm trying survive on the thought that i'll be glad i annoyed them into being careful once everyone survives without being exposed to covid, even if they might not credit me for it. I couldnt live with the conscience of knowing better and nit having told them. I know your struggle and im there with u. We can do this. Its super frustrating but we can get through this for our loved ones. Even if they are sometimes the source of said frustration 😅💕

I got Covid back in June. My 10th anniversary, that's what i got 🤣 Right off the bat I'll tell ya, it's NOT FUN. It's the sickest I've ever been & i don't get sick too often or too severely anymore. I never did get a fever which is interesting, but i got smacked in the face with every other symptom. Too weak to move, nauseous, i got chills & they were multiplyin. Delirious at times, couldn't think of what i was doing, couldn't breathe, and the body aches ???? Horrible. Other symptoms too. ugh it was so bad! But!! I know many people who have had it & their symptoms were so mild like a small cold or some that were asymptomatic. It's real & it's out there. Y'all be so careful out there. I'm sort of glad i got it though, cause it's like a bandaid. Rip it off & get it over with! My husband was positive as well, but my 2 kids didn't get it thank God. The guilt is totally real. It is such a horrible feeling that even though it wasn't our CHOICE to get sick, it was still US. Trying to care for your kids their whole lives, then turn around & you have an 8yo & an 11yo caring for you is a humbling thing & I'm super lucky to have such good kids willing to do that, but i still felt so guilty that I should push through what i was dealing with.

if this is too personal you don’t have to answer but when your kids were caring for you, did they wear masks and gloves and otherwise kept distance? i just want to be prepared if one of my parents gets sick (hopefully that never happens tho)

@@nicolecarmelo1013 my husband & i mostly stuck to our bedroom, the kids did the housework & cooking. (My 11yo finally got to try her hand at making fried chicken!) we visited the bathroom quite a bit but sanitized the best we could. The kids social distanced from us as much as possible but didn't wear masks or gloves. I visited my mom that week before i took my test & even though she is severely immunocompromised (renal failure among many other things), she didn't get it. Covid is a fickle mistress. Very happy she didn't but it's just one of those things you can't really tell. Unfortunately it doesn't follow many rules !

I feel Becky’s pain. Because my grandfather had a stroke and he’s in a home...whereas my grandmother is at their house alone. She’s super sad and super alone. They live in South Carolina whereas my family is in New York. They have been dating since they were in middle school and this is the longest they have been apart. She can’t visit him because of the Covid-19 situation. It’s super hard and super sad thinking about them separated and that there’s nothing they can do or I can do to help them.... I feel helpless

Calling your grandmother does help and Ik she'll love hearing from you. My maternal grandmother is currently alone as her husband (my grandfather) passed away in August 2019 at 80 y/o. While I wish he was still here, I'm grateful he didn't get COVID and my grandma was able to be with him right before he passed

i have ankylosing spondylitis (as well as zach) & when i was diagnosed and started being treated, my rheumatologist told me that because of my meds, i can’t even get a cold without being treated for it because my immune system will be so low that my body could literally kill me from a simple cold. the pandemic is really scary & can be deadly for everybody, but for people who are immunosuppressed, it’s literally a nightmare. it’s crazy that he didn’t get the coronavirus after maggie had it, but wow it’s literally a miracle that zach didn’t contract it and that maggie thankfully recovered from it. i love you all! keep being safe & thank you to maggie for putting her life on the line to help others. even without a pandemic, our healthcare workers don’t get enough respect or love and it breaks my heart.

I immediately googled "can you donate blood..." and "while pregnant" is actually the first suggestion. No is the answer by the way. As Maggie said (I think it was her), you need it to support the fetus.

This was an episode I needed. My mom’s an icu nurse and I’ve really had to limit my local social media consumption because of the rumors and misinformation that was getting spread there. Particularly the conspiracy theories claiming that they weren’t getting cases locally when I knew that was very much inaccurate. To explain these things are inaccurate and then have people continue to push that misinformation and have people believe it because it’s what they want to believe is so frustrating. It’s terrible but one of the ongoing sentiments I see is that this will all be over after the November election and I just don’t understand how easily these people can dismiss our icu numbers and the stories we are hearing from frontline nurses and doctors. So thank you for having a frank discussion on the topic and for role modeling from/with your platform.

I love Becky’s tidbit about the cats and shelters. I adopted two rescue dogs in the last three months. The first one was a 6 year old beagle terrier mix who was very timid and fearful at first and our second was a 3 month old coonhound basset hound mix that is the craziest ball of energy ever!! The 6 year old grew very attached to me since I spent the most time with her and trained her and walked her the most, and this year I will be starting college and will move away. Every time I would leave the house to go to work she would cry and have bad separation anxiety, but ever since we got the puppy she has cried much less when I leave, I love that the puppy can distract her and be a good play mate. 🐕💕🐶 Note on cats in shelters: I live in Chicago and the rescue I got my dogs from seems to have an abundance of cats and kittens simply because I think there are a lot more dog people in Illinois. So I hope some people listened to Becky and were encouraged to adopt! ❤️
