What I appreciate is how these scenes handled a sensitive topic without telling people exactly how they should feel about it. The characters felt real and you could see that they tried to be supportive but messed up their words occasionally. It's much more realistic than shows that have one character be the overly supportive saint and the other be the completely dismissive demon

agreed, I liked how organically it feels. None are perfect; the sister puts herself at risk for fear of discrimination, the doctor doesn't know much about nomenclature and accidentally says something offensive that pushes the patient away. Yet they all move forward with health as a priority. What a great moment.

I can only imagine how health issues like this effect a transgender person and it's all the more reason I urge people to take their health seriously. I am glad that more and more friends and family are supportive like Maggie is to her sister. At the end of the day, no matter your pronouns, you're someone special and you worthy of a healthy happy life.

"I learned a long time ago that you have to do what makes you happy. Even if some people think it's weird." I can't really explain it but this line feels so powerful especially with Maggie looking at her sister. Her sister must've gone through so many complaints from her family members probably even Maggie herselft but pushed through and did what made her happy. Being her true self.

I love that haltsead is not judgemental with his patients. He maybe akward but he means well and he tries to do his job in intention for the best long term result for the patient. One thing I critize about him that he is sometimes too pushy when the patient doesn't want the treatment, but mostly he does come around.

it's complicated bc many times the moment they know you are trans, they actively misdiagnose you or even mistreat you. It's super hard to navigate health care as a trans individual, one always has to juggle the timing to asses when it's riskier to withold the information or not. When I was in a car accident, the paramedic that took me started asking me about my health history, I told her I took testosterone bc I was trans. She stopped treating me and started yelling me saying that I was disgusting and that I should die. You have no idea how terrifying that experience was. I didn't know how bad I was hit, if I was going to make it or not, and the person that had to take care of me was abusing me instead of treating me. Other times, it's the broken arm syndrome. You might go to the ER with a broken arm and yet make it to be about your gender. None of this is just my opinion, it's what the statistics and data show. As trans people we must be extremely careful when to disclose this information, even from doctors, since it can put us in danger.

I like hearing your perspective :) I have a very close family member who is trans, and she feels different about the idea of "losing who the person used to be" because she believes that she is still the same person. Always has been. But she just uses a different name and pronouns, and has a more feminine appearance. But she says that who she is as a person, is still the same as she was before she transitioned. But i also do really love the idea of celebrating the new identity of the person, and also acknowledging the memories they have with the person before they came out. And making jokes about it is a really good way to ease the process too.

I agree with you. For example: the mother of a son who transitions to female is grieving the loss of her son, because now she has to welcome a daughter. It takes time to accept. She loves her daughter, but misses her son.

I think something key about this is that the one chicago team casted a trans woman for this role. She brings to her character a deep element of understanding and experience, for the difficulty to both herself and those who care for her, as well as coping with how those around her react, trying to care for herself and them throughout a period of transition.

they could have had a bad situation in the past when they disclosed that they’re trans. ppl have been killed just for saying that they’re trans. i’m not saying that medical professionals are inherently transphobic or that you shouldn’t disclose it it’s just that there is a sizeable risk in telling ppl that ur trans bc u have no way of knowing how they will react. and medical professionals can be bigoted too. there are cases where professionals don’t act as they should because of biases and bigotry. it’s not as black and white as ‘just tell them’ when just telling someone has gotten trans ppl killed in the past.

i really don’t like the way maggie says ‘i miss my brother’. like yeah it sucks but can u imagine how her sister feels?? having gone through discovering she was trans, coming out, facing backlash and transitioning just for ur sister to say she ‘misses her brother’? it’s really invalidating. if one of my sibling said that to me i’d be heartbroken. however you view it, maggie’s sister faced way worse than maggie did and even though maggie is a main character she shouldn’t have centred herself in this. she’s not the one who’s trans and she’s not the one who now has to deal with cancer.
@tainii-san5879
@tainii-san5879 2 года назад
Sure but that doesn't invalidate either of their experiences. Maggie acknowledges that her sister went through more pain but that in no way indicates that her feelings on her sister's transition should be downplayed. They're both hurt and we should recognise it, she tried to be supportive but she can't force those feelings away. It was said in the heat of the moment, feelings were hurt but it's better to say it then let it pile up.

Wait, is being called transgender when you are transgender offensive?? Also I want people to understand that being trans can be difficult for family members aswell, and it’s possible for them to go through a state of morning when a sibling or child transitions because it can feel like there brother/sister or son/ daughter has died or gone away. I learnt this a while ago when I had a birthmark on my chest removed cause it was getting bigger and for the few weeks that it spent healing I felt weird knowing that it was gone cause it was the same way my whole life, my doctor explained that It was a form of morning, you don’t necessarily have to be upset or against something to grieve
@That_Demiboy_Poker
@That_Demiboy_Poker Год назад
The first part, it can be down to dysphoria. For me, it isn't offensive but for other trans people it could cause heavier dysphoria so it depends on the person, although doctors and professionals do need to make it clear that they're trans regardless if it's important, And as for the second part, that's true, but at the same time it also depends on the trans person as well as some trans people can't cope with hearing about that type of mourning,

But unless its the trans person's spouse and they identify as straight, the relationship between the trans person and the family member doesn't really change just because of their gender. But i did really love when Maggie said "not completely" either implying Denise is the same person, or that Denise is still alive and Maggie wants her to get testing done. Or both! But yeah, you aren't losing someone just because they transition, they are still the same person they always were.

You forget to put shoes on the other side as well. Yes Its harder for people that transition, but think about the other person too. Bottom line, everything is a process for BOTH sides. And the process needs to be natural and not instant. So dont shame people if theyre struggling to cope with you transitioning when You know They love you. Again, its a process. They'll get there, it could be slower or quicker than you thought.

I wish Will could have just been like, "OOOHhhh! OK, that makes sense now." And then just continued on. Normalizing. No different than if the patient turned out to have both sexual organs internally and was just too embarrassed to say, or born with just one ovary but didn't want to say.

Will Halstead said in this episode that to use term transgender is offensive. Why? Is it bc she is transwomen if I understand correctly the terminology. Transgender term is used when person hasn't been through transition yet. But she clearly was, so she is (trans) women.
@grashla
@grashla 2 года назад
Will said: “Did you know it was offensive to use ‘transgender’ as a noun?” The word ‘transgender’ is actually an adjective, usually a pre-modifier to be specific. As a guess, he probably said something like “as a transgender….” rather than “as someone who is transgender….” or something along those lines. He never said the word itself was offensive, he just was curious about the way he used it being offensive. Hope that helps🙃.

It's also important to remember what's offensive is very subjective based on our personal experiences. While yes, there are many words and phrases that are commonly considered offensive there's a lot of grey area where words can be offensive to one person and not others. I'd someone tells you they found something you said offensive, you should acknowledge it, promise to do better and move on. Going around asking others if they knew it was offensive is the right approach. It doesn't matter if someone else didn't find it offensive, all that matters is the person in question found it offensive.

She probably fears being treated poorly if she tells the doctors she’s trans, so wouldn’t bring it up unless it was relevant like this turned out to be. A trans woman going to the doctor for prostate cancer isn’t the same as going to the doctor for pneumonia, for example. Being trans is relevant to one but not the other

I wonder how CSI episodes are gonna work for "representation". Usually, with DNA samples from unidentified bodies they say the victim is male or female, now ppl are going to be upset about that? And how will biology and anatomy classes work when teaching differences between male and female bodies and their specific problems?
@tally9542
@tally9542 2 года назад
We won't. Male and Female are biological terms, Man and Woman are social. We're transmen and transwomen, not transmale and transfemale, and we know that. It's not too hard for a mortician to tell if someone is trans, if the show wants representation, they'll include it.
