I had no idea there even WAS a species of maggot that eats healthy skin. That is straight-up horrifying, those poor sheep. Glad they've got you looking after them.
These 3 comments and upvotes indicate the majority idiocracy. The 1st is banal, 2nd erroneous and 3rd correct with downvotes. Also, western politics reflects it soon to become 3rd world.
Sheep are wonderful animals, they give so much to humans and ask only for a good shepherd in return. There’s a good reason so many ancient cultures saw shepherds as extremely praiseworthy individuals. You should be very proud.
To all the selfish ignorant humans who want to know what they give to us I ask. What do we give,? Killing them for wool meat, killing all animals for foodor trophies to prove man, kill endangered species so we can eat more cows, have more land for building houses strip malls don't need. Destroy wildlife habitat and blame them for being there protecting their families. Pigs r some smartest animals n world top 5 ocean life mammals r slaughtered for meat don't need and culture! Dogs cats same. So sheep are here for reason part of ecosystem beyond my knowledge like all animals reptiles species have purpose. What r humans good for
I’m glad you were able to help this sheep! I am a nurse, and I have dealt with maggots before and they are so disgusting and smell so awful! I did not know there was a maggot that feast on healthy flesh! We need to hope this does not cross over to people!
As disgusted and gag induced i am right now i understand how important this is for the animals we hold. I have the greatest respect for people who do this kind of job so that i have not to do this. I bet the sheep appreciates all of that.
@amazingdude9042 Well, that is how the business of ranching works. Not everyone can wait around for “free” government money; so yes…. Livestock do get slaughtered to feed people, other pets like cats and dogs; as well as provide other products to the market. You wouldn’t want the world to miss out on cute puppies and kittens would you?
As gross as the “Disco Rice” are, I’ll bet that the relief must be incredible. To go from the bitey and itchy feeling, then to the buzzing of the clippers must be like the ultimate back scratch!!
Takes me back to the time my chicken had flystrike… lemme tell you having to pull all of them off of her back and bathing them was absolutely disgusting. She was very much disabled after that and I just took care of her like a baby until she passed. She healed up nicely but it affected her poor body too much and she ended up seizing or haemorrhaging. I don’t believe she was in pain after she healed up until that moment.
That happened to one of my chickens once. I kept washing and washing the area but couldn’t find the end of the maggots so I was pretty freaked out and had to put her down. -I didn’t want her to have to got through being eaten alive.
I have had 2 guineas pigs and one rabbit suffer from the affliction. Unfortunately the rabbit died from it but the guineas thankfully survived. It's good that you caught it when you did because it's horrible to see an animal in that much pain
@@joevanweedler piggies are in my opinion easier to treat because you can give them a bath which they absolutely enjoy. Just make sure that you dry them off properly after because you don't want them getting cold
The blue powder is Negasunt, to prevent new maggots from bothering the sheep again. My dog had wound and it got infested by maggots in a single night. Glad to see the maggots i the video didn't seem to get deeper inside the flesh
@@thebighurt2495 I'm no expert in its components, they have something that kills the current maggots and prevents new ones to get in. Must be applied in the wound and nearby skin. You must use gloves and mask to avoid accisental aspiration.
Finally I see what my German Shepherd had. same area all along the spine. Totally shocked after 40 years of dogs and never saw it. Clipped him and used a shop vac to remove the maggots. thousands! Took a long time to heal, he was sick systemically.
They start at the size of rice or less. By the time you can see them it is a mess. This is a dog on a hundred acres and never had a leash on him, so after 10 years, it is not expected. @@marikos.154
@@mar83161 It takes a hardy soul and steady stomach! 🤣 I used to help the local vet, it always made us both sad because you never knew what was gonna be under that fur/hair/wool. Tough stuff. I applaud you. ♥️👍
yknow I never thought about the nibbling meaning relief, but it makes a lot of sense! I've seen ewes doing it during and after giving birth and I kinda figured it was sort of a hormonal thing or something, but that being an expression of relief and "this is a productive/satisfying/relieving feeling" makes a lot of sense.
People who take care of these kind of problems are so special. I would never want any animals to suffer so I would take them to the vet I don’t have the nerve or stomach to do it so these people are heaven sent in my eyes
Lot of times there's not a specialty /livestock vet around and if you find one they're *incredibly* expensive... if you have a whole herd of sheep or whatever animal that would multiply out of control very fast. Keeping animals turns you into a specialized vet tech out of sheer necessity lol. Never would have imagined myself doing some of the things I have for injured/sick chickens and goats but it's rewarding when things go right and you can help them and I feel more confident when things inevitably go south again (chickens especially love to just randomly malfunction or die lmao but I love em)
@RJ-pu4tz Dont look up "human botfly". Botflies and screw worms (botfly is type of fly that bites and then lays an egg in the bite so the maggot can develop in there and eat live tissue "screw worm" is a term for the maggot) are gross enough. But in the tropics theres a specific botfly that lays its eggs only on humans.
Oh my god, how horrible time sheep has. Thank you so so much for helping and relieve that sheep. Sheep, you will feel like you can fly, right? God bless you
Did you guys see at about 2:15 how still she became once he started petting her head?? 🥹 She was so anxious! And his touch calmed her just like that!! ❤
That's a large area of fly strike. We check our flock daily we can usually spot first signs in those with flystrike by their behaviour. Though saying that we've had a ewe off her legs within 24hrs and when trimming we could see they had burrowed tunnels from her back end it was the worst case we had seen in such a short space of time she was depressed head down losing her mind we trimmed and cleaned her thoroughly thought she would die but she made it threw and fostered in her later years. They are bustards those damn things. Good job
I bet the beautiful sheep feels a 100% better with them horrid maggots off her 🤢 can you imagine the itch with them wriggling about under her fleece arrr gringe , thank you for helping this poor sheep 🐑 what a great farmer & keeper you truly are thank you I never knew about this
It's flystrike m8. They get it mostly rear end and over the shoulder. It's part of the life of sheep. You should do a stint on an Australian merino sheep property. You soon get used to it.
This can be life threatening. I knew an elderly dog who was neglected outside for just a few days and had maggots burrowing inside him. He was too old to handle the surgery and had to be put down. Please check on your animals and never leave them outside for prolonged periods without checking their fur.
It's amazing how many stories we've heard about pets being affected by flystrike. Pet owners and farmers alike need to be vigilant to ensure their animals are in good health.
Can someone tell me why this happens? I doubt it's neglect on the part of the owners. Are these maggots eating a wound of some sort or is there another reason?
The sheep say : 'WHAT was that??!" 2nd sheep: " I don't know." 1st Sheep : ":well it was a nice scritch". 2nd sheep: " Yes, but awful cologne at the end". 1st sheep : "Yep. Bye Frieda." 2nd sheep : " yes, bye to you too Maxine, see you around."🐑🐑🐑🐑
