I only purchased the $5 welcome bundle in Arena and had about 97% of each set completed over 2 years. You can get a near 100% if you are good at draft but I never needed 100%. Arena is definitely f2p you just have to put in the time like any other game.

I built my first complete Runeterra deck after just one day of playing and a top tier meta deck after one week of moderate play without spending a cent. Unthinkeable in MTGA.
@GSBroker

I spent about 2 months for my first complete meta deck in MTGA (doing dailies every single day), then a new expansion dropped and my deck became trash. Talking about izzet phoenix in 2019 just before M20. I hate MTGA.
@DayOfCasual
@DayOfCasual 3 года назад
I played both a lot and: What they did not mention is the amount of time needed to do the dailies in MTGA is greater than in Runeterra. In Runeterra, you get 1 quest reroll daily stacking up to 2, and you can stack up to 3 daily quests. Meaning that If I get a quest that is somehow hard to do for my current card set, I can either reroll it instantly or do the other quests to just free space for next daily quest and with it another reroll. This allows me to mostly dodge playing rubish decks to finish quests, and if I really have to, cuz for example I missed a day or two of playing and are at a 3 daily quest cap, I just go play vs AI. In MTGA, if I get a quest for a color pairing I don't have, and reroll it into another I don't, I am stuck with that quest until I get another reroll or I have to make up some mockup deck to not miss on tommorow's quest. I think in Arena you could stack up to 2 quests thou. Also there are no bans in Runeterra. No card was ever banned, cards were either nerfed, buffed or rarerly reworked. Also sometimes a Card was nerfed too hard, and they buffed it back. It happened to Shen for example, where he went from 4 mana 2/6, to 4 mana 2/5, to 4 mana 3/5 and he is in a better place now than he ever was. Although the meta doesn't favor him much right now you can still play him and do well. I even had just 1 good deck in MTGA and it was Marduu Knights. It was tough to get another. In runeterra, I had already a deck or two, and when I saw another, I crafted few cards from my shards and had it already. In fact, I have did this few times and now I got lots of decks ready to play. The only limiting factor are champions but you still get tons of them from the weekly vault. I think they didn't mention the weekly reward vault enough thou.

I got incredibly lucky in draft and managed to get an amazing dimir rougue/mill deck ultra cheap after my first month (i know, i know, i feel dirty every time i play it but it lets me grind 15 wins real quick because people just concede, everyone hates playing against this shitty deck, myself included) but that is waaaay outside the norm

@@DayOfCasual "In MTGA, if I get a quest for a color pairing I don't have..." Impossible. You get complete decks of every color and color pairing in MTGA. If you are only trying to complete the quest, you don't need a tier-one deck, or ever a tier-three deck.

At the end of the day, the economy plays a big part in gameplay experience. The fact that LoR is so generous where you are able to get a full set in just a few months, allows for a lot of theory crafting and deck building. Being able to exercise one's creativity through deck building is probably the most fun part of a card game which has always been gated behind boosters and expensive cards, reserved only for the professional players. Meanwhile it is also important to look at the other side. A lot of us have been ingrained by this terrible economies that we derive a lot of our sense of satisfaction and achievement from creating our dream deck. After getting a full set in LoR, you can potentially lose interest as you desire for the next achievement, the next dopamine hit. You might end up not playing the game until the next expansion hits. This behavior is largely attributed to our ingrained habits developed by these terribly card game with shitty economies. You definitely have to unlearn and learn how to have fun in LoR, learning to enjoy the creative aspect of deck building and theorycrafting.

@Shenaldrac
@Shenaldrac 3 года назад
I'd argue that the game should be fun to play in and of itself, and that it should be the driving force of a player's enjoyment beyond the deckbuilding. So while a player might not have anything to work towards anymore as far as a personal collection goes once they've completed their collection, there's still a reason to play the game, to want to experience the game itself. I don't deny that plenty of the fun in a constructed card game comes from building the deck itself. That's perfectly fine, it's a good thing, people _should_ have fun planning out what they want to make, building a deck to do something cool. But I get worried when talk shifts to something that seems as though the game itself is secondary. If players aren't interested in playing the game as much as they are in just theory crafting, then I see that as a bad sign of the game's gameplay.
@SuzukaYuka
@SuzukaYuka 3 года назад
@@Shenaldrac That's because no matter How good a game is, It won't matter If you aren able to fully experience it. And LoR let's ALL it's players get the most out of It. The game being good or not is subjective: HS players may deslike the lack of crazy RNG, or how priority alternates all the time; MtG players may miss the complexity that an older game has compared to a game that's in it's third set; LoR players will appreciate spell mana and the turn structure (I mean, the game has a 50/50 winrate for going First/second). You can't say that they are right or wrong, but game economy can be put on numbers and it's hard to deny LoR has the best economy for their players.

The problem is not that "it's not Magic". I have played a lot of CCGs apart from MTG. Runeterra stands out in terms of questionable gameplay decisions (like their priority system and a battlefield limited to 6 permanents with no interesting positional mechanics to speak of unlike some other CCGs), and in terms of a very tacky and invasive visual style (those champion level up animations are absolutely atrocious and cannot be turned off). That game has some very objective problems that are the reason why it isn't as popular as it could (probably) be.
@boxtupos7718
@boxtupos7718 3 года назад
@@ivanivanovich1020 Positioning in LOR is pretty important though. Best example is how you always make Darius hit last. Or how in Shadow Isles decks you position the order of how your units should die (As some cards earn stats after seeing an ally die or a champion level up in combat). I also like the priority system, as mixed with the mana system, bluffing becomes pretty prevalent in higher elos. Playing cards, fast spells or slow spells passes priority; So you either open attack or wait for your opponent to spend their mana (With the risk of them developing their board) or Open attack (Which leaves your opponent with mana for combat tricks).
@ivanivanovich1020
@ivanivanovich1020 3 года назад
@@boxtupos7718 All of these count as minor positional synergies at best compared to other card games in my book. Say, in MMDOC about 80% of spells and all creature combat were completely dictated by the positioning of your cards. In IW most spells and creature positioning involved mindgames about which zone the relevant card will end up in, and in which order, by the time it resolves or combat happens. On top of, you know, having literal simultaneous turns.

You are literally the only person I've seen who made the right critique. The users are all "the economy! the economy!" as if it was such a big fucking deal, when the actual deal is the shit experience MTGA offers as a service. Shitty friends / dueling UI/UX. Shitty and unclear ranked system (Getting from bronze to gold is virtually the same, since you gain so much more than you lose, *if* you are on a tier that even loses something). No mobile client (in 2020, during a pandemic...). Lackluster profile info (to the point where add ons focus literally on that. I can't believe you can't have a deck-winrate). I appreciate _a lot_ of what MTGA does for the experience and how to streamline it (autopay comes to mind), but goddamn how do you even design for "f2p" without key multiplayer experiences that make it easy to come back to. LoR is, imho, a shitty, shallow, lackluster game (kinda like early YuGiOh ... or modern YuGioh, really) that's more dead than alive not 1 year after release. No economic advantage is gonna fix that. But damn, playing magic, online, is basically making a pick between shitty UI/UX MTGO and shitty and underdeveloped UX MTGA.

It's just a magic simulator. The reason I've stopped playing newer yugioh games is because that's all they are - card game simulators without anything else to enhance the gameplay. For that, I can play the fan-made YGOPro. Whereas before, we had games like Tag Force, where you had an actual story to beat, some role playing and dating sim aspects, etc. Magic Arena is just a shittier version of the paper card game, and that's a shame because it could be so much more.

Runeterra is hands down the best TCG in the entire market, physical or digital. The game is so absurdly good value to play for free and the mechanics and visuals(both art and animations) are S++ and the best I've ever seen. LoR is the same tho when it comes to this, you also get 1 per day and can stack up to 3, but you get a reroll everyday on top of it and can stack up to 2 rerolls. With 30$ one time investment ( 50% of a AAA release ) + all the stuff I got just for playing ,I can make 2 ladder viable decks ( skill and meta CHOICE are only variables of how high I can climb ) - 4 days and an equivalent of an online service game price ( example Overwatch 29 euros ) ... 0 weekly vaults opened; which will pretty much round up the third deck. I've played pretty much all of the card games worth playing and I must say ... there is no real comparison, LoR stands out BIG time in this, most important, aspect.

I downloaded Runeterra and man, wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. It’s actually a tragedy that this game flies under the radar. The economy is amazing, the gameplay is smooth and polished, the mechanics are so well though out, you could do amazing things there. And goddamn those animations.
