I fell in love with the NBA in the 80s and I couldn’t stand Larry Bird. I thought to be a badass you had to be athletic and black. I thought he was just lucky and hyped up by the press. Just shows you how ignorant I was. I clearly didn’t know what I was talking about. Bird is my favourite player and I’ll take him over LBJ all day every day.
Bird and Jordan. The 2 best closers of all time. Can’t think of anyone else that I’d want to take the last shot of a game over those 2 guys. By far, the greatest ever those 2 to close a game.
Interestingly as great and superlative as Kareem and Jordan were they didn’t have dynasties until two key additions - Pat Riley and Phil Jackson as coaches and magic and pippen as go to players. Just an opinion
I love this story! And the fact that it’s Magic telling it makes it just that much better! You can tell Magic really relishes his place in the Legend of Larry Bird! Love them both, but Bird is MY GOAT 🐐

Finally A NEW Bird trash talking story! And a fantastic one at that (they all are!)...Brilliantly told by his main competition...his partner in crime! Magic just HAS to have a bunch more that he's been saving for all of these years. Intentionally leaking them whenever he feels like it....on his own terms! I can't wait until he chooses to tell the next one! Someone need to diligently research all of Bird's competition throughout his career and write a coffee table book that consists of his opponents telling stories about his trash talking. I would buy it in.a heartbeat!
Well the documentary about them called a courtship of Rivals is just beautiful and this is one of the great stories of two men who love each other and whose Fates are bound to each other in a beautiful way that brings inspiration and Delight to all.
While I don't think Magic Johnson exaggerates, I do think he is an exceptional story teller. He really brings stories to life and tells them very entertainingly. It isn't just this story. Every story I have heard him tell, he tells them in a very interesting way and brings them to life.
That's Magics intelligence speaking. Larry will always be one notch higher though because Magic splurged in LA while Larry was practicing. *Larry GOAT*
Magic always hypes up Bird because Magic is smart enough to understand that the two legends are so intertwined that to build up Larry builds up his rival Magic too. Plus, Magic is a positive guy with class- always he talks people up whether it's Larry, Michael, Kobe, etc.
If they played against each other today they’d both risk dying on the court of a heart attack to beat each other. Then they’d go to dinner afterwards and joke around. Their rivalry and then friendship made the NBA better for generations.
Larry came back into a playoff game with a fractured cheekbone after the trainer told him not to. Lebron was carried off the floor during a playoff game by two teammates because of a leg cramp.
Larry Bird is having the best fan base renaissance ever. So many people who never watched him are loving the greats say only positive things about his game and personality.

All that came after them, Jordan included, owe their wealth to these two men. Prior to Bird & Magic the NBA was languishing. They took the league to the stratosphere. The Celtics vs Lakers rivalry was the best thing to ever happen to the NBA. Could not have been scripted any better. East coast old school versus west coast flash. They were the faces of each. Was the golden era.
Momentum based athletes get bored to the point of having a relenting desire to call their shots. Larry Bird is this guy. He never meant to be cocky it was simply in his nature to keep him in the game. He had to be cocky to play. His opponents could and would object but they knew Bird's game was Bird's game with no mercy.

If you listened Magic was guarding DJ. After he passed it Magic ran to guard Bird. They were a half court apart which is why Bird said running all that way.
Always love to talk basketball but honestly, when talking about who is the greatest of the elite, to suggest it’s between James, Bird and Magic and completely ignore Jordan is ludicrous. They’re all “one of kind” players, but no bonafide expert of the game of basketball places any of them above Michael Jordan. I know some ex-players and observers might say James, but I said bonafide expert.
Magic talked about Larry like that in front of every black person, commentator, spectator, and athlete. Magic doesn't see color in the way you do. For you, that's unfortunate. Magic doesn't care about color. Larry didn't care about color......you do though. So it's time to reassess your stupid comment here.

I played in a band for almost 3 years while being the only black guy with 4 other white guys. My 2 kids are mixed with white. I listen to 60s-80s country throughout every day along with 70s-80s rock. We all know about how great Larry and Magic where and the respect.. I’ve seen Magic’s speeches and comments on other stars .. magic is definitely code switching here.. to please suckers like you.
I've always said since I was a kid that Michael Jordan is the greatest player ever. Hands down without a question. I'm 33 close in it on 34 and the more I hear these Stories in the More see footage of Larry Bird playing in the More that people Talk about how High his intelligence is the More I can't Help but think he is The Greatest of all time simply because he was literally the complete package. And he had the intelligence and know how that no other player before or since has ever had.
