Magic Just Announced a Suprise New Standard Set For 2024! | Magic Foundations

Magic the Gathering announced recently that there is a secret 5th standard set this year that will increase the size of the card pool and provide a foundation for standards to come. This set is truly unique as it won't rotate out of standard until at least 2029, so the cards in it have a high chance to be highly impactful at one point or another.

I was gonna say "Don't we already have Ixalli's lore keeper?" But that's just for Dino spells I guess. Still, as someone who played a lot of Standard with mana dorks as an opener, they often just get sniped by burn, counter, or destroy. Which...I mean I guess that wastes a card for the other person, but often times it was hard to get value from my dorks.

An interesting thing to note is with the release of Foundations, ALL enchantments will have the Nyx frame only found on Enchantment Creatures prior to this release. Enchantments finally have a unique frame to distinguish them at a glance!

This is why I loved the Deckbuilder's Toolkits back when they sold them. It was a solid foundation of cards to just build decks from to play with friends and it was wonderful

My favorite way to play used to be each person in my playgroup buying a deck builder's toolkit and building s new deck on the spot. Guaranteed to have some good cards and random enough that everyone wasn't going to get the exact same thing. So you never knew what everyone else was going to play. I wish they would bring those back.

Omniscience is not a problem if you can't cheat it in very well and Llanowar Elves has been standard legal for more of the game than it hasn't. If you include Mystic Elves, it's even more so. The only one that really bothers me is Day of Judgement since there are already too many sweepers as it is, but again, either that or Wrath of God have been in standard for most of the game's history.

@@shaneg9081agreed, the only card I'm worried about is Day of Judgement. Omniscience will only ever see play in scam decks that aren't that great in current standard as well as a payoff for heavy control decks

I mean, there’s always going to be board wipes in standard. Day of Judgement is just going to be the baseline of a good board wipe. It’ll likely be overshadowed by any that exile. You probably won’t see it played until Sunfall rotates out

I love how this will open up card design. No more having to create new boardwipes every set for fear of not having a white board wipe for standard. Now a year maybe we'll just have to play around day of judgement. In place of the 20th wipe or mana dork now there will be original card designs, that's great

That's kinda neat. That means we get, like, 5 years of a Magic "patch" to base the meta on. That means we get 5 years of rotating sets to augment that "base game" with whatever trickery sets come in with. Yes, it's still a core set in essence. The fact that it stays in for 5 years means there's something more concrete to hold onto for certain players, like me, who are just not willing to rebuild standard every few months. We can literally build a Foundations-only standard deck and ride it for 5 years. It most likely wouldn't be great, but we can.

@@fernandob2275 Truthfully, I don't actually play standard. I just think that it's an interesting notion for WotC to go for. I'm an EDH player myself; I just kind of build a deck I'd like, play it, and keep it if I like it. Ultimately, Foundations isn't really a thing for me to keep my eyes on. 🤣

I think the most intriguing part of this is that the two enchantments revealed for this set are both in the frame that is usually reserved for enchantments that have another card type so this makes me wonder if this is just a thing for this set or if we will permanently have regular enchantments with the constellation border. If so, I think this is a welcome addition and useful for distinguishing enchantments from other permanents

I *believe* they e basically confirmed enchantments are going to have this frame now going forward. I know it's something they've been discussing and asking the community about for a while now, pretty happy to see it actually happening though. After all, artifacts have their own frame, vehicle even get their own frame, makes sense for enchantments to as well to help keep things more visually clear on the board.

@@herpderp66watch them put Sheoldred or similarly annoying card into this Foundations set just for fun 😅 I’m not trying to be too pessimistic but yeah my thoughts are: sweet, a foundations set for the players who don’t want to expand to / embrace the complexity of new cards.. but the power level of standard is so flipping high that these foundations cards might just get blown over no?

@bradyvilhauer4445 Foundation looks to be your staple but boring cards. Wrath of god, ponder/opt, lightning strike, shock. Very basic easy to understand cards but those cards are efficient and do their job well.

@@bradyvilhauer4445 I don't think this is true. We went through the same phases where cards were banned and rules changed. We also had block formats we had to play every 3 sets so we had to embrace. And some of these card will 100% get played. Every time llanawar elves has been in standard it sees heavy play. Ponder and wrath will get played the 4 mana wraths they make are not as good as wrath.

If you haven’t been paying attention, the power of cards has gotten so high that Baneslayer Angel was in the most recent Core Set and saw 0 standard play. When it first appeared in Standard several years before then, it Ran the format. 😂

This sounds nice. It can be a lot of work when most of my deck rotates out of standard, and I can still keep a base structure to keep and work around without having to make a whole new decks in read all the cards to try and figure out what combos I can setup

This is amazing! It will get me back into standard. I am so excited! I have played pauper and pauper commander exclusively for a long while with the goal of not going bankrupt for standard haha. They are genius. Players like me will spend a little more and play a lot more with something like this as the foundation of the game.

Kind of a cool idea. They must be anticipating the fall off of EDH. LGS aren't looking as packed anymore and a lot of new players have kind of disappeared. Some places around me have started making Yu-Gi-Oh the game to play on what used to be MTG days. We always get a random wave of newbies but this time there were so many. They better make standard worth playing again in person

Idk where you're playing my friend but trust me, EDH/commander is thriving and aliving more than ever. I go to a place that is filled with commander players, almost no standard (though is played there), all days of the week. Actual FNM with roughly 40 people a night all playing actual commander actually. This is true from a lot of the shops in my area and those i've been hearing about online just in ernest. 🤷🏼‍♂️

My thing is if there were a set just called Magic the Gathering that set would contain the exact same 302 cards included in limited edition beta, the set called Magic the Gathering. Because they're already is a set called Magic the Gathering we have retroactively termed it as limited edition beta however it is in fact called Magic the Gathering

This is a great idea. A core set that becomes an actual core for deck building for a long time. This should help stabilize metas and ensure certain playstyles stay in place no matter what sets arrive. Can't wait to see the spoiler.

Hear me out. Would love to see some standard precons return using foundation cards as the base and then mix in some cards from the current standard set for flavour. Will be more viable to purchase as alot of the deck will be good for 5 years and would further help newer players into standard.

This is a great Idea. Most time someone wants to start playing already gets doubt if you tell them something like "Oh yeah . Those new Cards you just bought are only legal for 2 Months" or something like that. This gives newer players the chance to build a Deck and play for a while without the need of buying new Cards all the time

that's actually genius, the biggest reason I stopped playing standard is because I hated building a solid deck, then having it rotate, this is probably going to boost standard again if people can get comfortable with their own standard deck that won't become obsolete every 4 or 5 months.

This is kind of interesting as someone who's never played standard. I can make a core deck w foundation cards and then I can upgrade it with cards I get while playing limited. Let's me attend standard events without any cost beside my 75 foundation cards and what I already drafted.

I think a core pool of cards is a good idea, however I think day of judgement was not a good reprint as neutral or positive board wipes in standard tend to be at least 5 mana like sunfall. 4 mana ones usually negatively impact the player like the MKM providing clues. Just goes to show power creep in magic and I ask the question if this set is meant to provide staples for 5 years or have a substantial impact on the meta like a new set does

Wrath of God/Day of Judgement were legal in standard for years, it actually has been a more "recent" change to not have them. Personally, I hope it helps to reduce the annoyance of mono red in the format, as it seems pretty meta warping right now, but we'll have to see.

This IS a core set. It's exact what a core set should be, and closer to a traditional core set than newer players might realize. Ever since Magic 2010 (M10) corr sets have rotated/been replaced every single year, but prior to M10 core sets were legal for 2 years. Being legal for 5 years doesnt make it functionally any different from a core set (from what we can tell so far).

I really hope that when we get Foundations 2, it's almost exactly the *same* set except 1- Things that need to be powered up get a new version that's just straight up better to keep them relevant in the new meta. 2- Things that were too strong get a weaker version that's just simple. 3- Things that move in the color pie, get a new version in their new color 4- New evergreen effect in the pie also appear in some cards here 5- There is no "theme" at all. No "twist". No "core set but it's teferi". Just a straight update of what the purest form of magic at the moment is.

I don't know if they still make them anymore or not, but a deck builders tool kit. it comes with everything you need to start or even try arena starter kits comes with two pre-built decks and I think it even comes with instructions

So adding a 5 year set to standard to reduce the impact of rotation, meanwhile printing new high power sets every couple years directly into modern so that we basically have a soft rotation cycle. Modern looks like modern horizons block constructed at this point. Here's an idea: let rotating formats rotate, and let non-rotating formats evolve naturally instead of completely nuking them with overpowered sets.

That's exactly what a Core Set was. Even when the set rotated, at least 75% of the cards were reprinted in the next Core Set. Honestly, they should have just made Revised be the perpetual Core Set, possibly adding and removing new cards for upcoming flavor, and for cards that are universally loved.
