Another great and thoughtful episode. I too, was turned off by the title of this book and didn’t give it a second thought. I will now have to reconsider and am likely to read it. Thank you.

Hi Barthmerrill7947, nice to hear from you again! Thank you for sharing your thoughts… yes I think due to our education we all seem to struggle with the word magic. That is why I appreciate that Chris Gosden defined it clearly again. Thank you also for your kind feedback. I wish you a great day and hope to welcome you again on the next episode (where I will talk about Newton and Alchemy… so more magic to come 😁

Dear Jane, You are very welcome. Indeed its scope is impressive and thought provoking. It is the kind of book that deserves more attention. Thank you for your message and hope you enjoy my latest episode about Isaac Newton and his Alchemical work too. As mentioned before, it is for people like you that I make these episodes. 😊🌟 I wish you a wonderful day, Lieven

Lucid, sane scepticism is like gold dust in the overheated chaos of modern thought. Many thanks for this... you might like John O'Maolearcha's new book on Henri Bergson's philosophical work on time/duration and the theatrical magick of Bergson's sister, Mina, who was the founding initiate of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. I am not at all convinced by the high ceremonial dramas of the post-Masonic ''magic clubs' like the GD and the OTO ... but I totally agree that the science-magic(k) relationship is not one of stark opposition.

Hello Patrick! Nice to hear from you. Yes I had a good time with lots of reading 😁. How was your summer?
@patrickkelly5004
@patrickkelly5004 11 месяцев назад
Summer? Such season does not exist in an equatorial climate (i.e. I live in Singapore), but thank you for asking. I, too, have been absorbing the quality of some great books, but mine is mostly done though my ears, since I depend on audiobooks for my "reading" pleasure.@@BoldBooksandBones

One of my clients is a leading real estate developer and builder of immense condominium towers in downtown Montreal. A large portion of its buyers are affluent Chinese, many of whom are highly educated. The company stages all its Inauguration and sales events on dates considered lucky and prosperous in the Chinese calendar. As for non-Chinese buyers, many consult feng shui experts before furnishing their condos. Magical thinking is very much alive in the concrete world of Canadian real estate. Excellent episode, Lieven! Another book to hunt down, but I never go book hunting on a Sunday. Always Thursday, when it is said the books we need rearrange themselves to be found.

Hi @cluelessinsider7620 thank you for your kind words. Yes, I can only confirm that many Chinese people are very munch interested in moments and signs that are considered lucky. If you have a real estate with number 8 for example then normally you can ask a premium because it is considered as a lucky number for Chinese. I love how my Chinese family organises important moments and celebrations on days considered lucky and yes Feng Shui is no stranger to us too. Somehow these moments feel more special then. Now, about your claim that on Thursdays book rearrange themselves to be found... mmmh I'm rather sceptical about it. Since in Europe this only happens on Fridays.

I taught and wrote about prescient states of consciousness after several years of research and observation of those who demonstrated such abilities at will. The behavioural model I constructed is easy to learn but, for the majority, hard to understand how, what it teaches, fits into our modern way of life.

An ironically interesting fact is that even though Newton is still promoted in modern times as a hero of rational thought by atheists he in his time made a statement in which he called it a phenomenon so senseless and odious to human beings that due to this it never had many professors.

We believe what we observe and preferably what we see. Often, understanding of the observed takes us a step further. But this step involves cognition. And this of course is strongly influenced by who we are/have become … among others by reading. Thank you for this, another inspiring contribution. 🤨

On the strength of your recommendation, I have ordered a hard copy version of this book. I have a 19 hour flight coming up, and hope to spend part of my time enjoying The History of Magic. When I finish, i will pass it to one of my children, and ask them to share it around.

On my list! I was going to be hard headed and sceptical about this, but have heard similar stories of dreams like the one you relate...and then I looked round my living room and saw some folk toys, charms and amulets, collected or gifted, not part of my own belief system, and not features of any organised religion, but nevertheless definitely benign spirits, somehow comforting.

should we assume that science is the total knowing thanks for the job done
@BoldBooksandBones

Hello Muyanjajames22, thank you for sharing your thoughts. No, I think that science is never knowing. It is a continuous effort to search for truth, while never be convinced that it has found truth. Science is therefore different from philosophies that claim to have the ultimate truth. At least that is what I think. I wish you a nice day. Lieven
