Yes! Same! Somebody had to say it. I just never really..."got" Max Maven. The character feels like a Flash Gordon throwback. I'm far more interested in the man, the magic historian, the genius. I'm more interested in Phil Goldstein. This sounds fascinating for that reason. Thanks for breaking it down so beautifully.

Kayfabe is older than wrestling, it's a carny term. Wrestling originated in carnivals and as a result a lot of wrestling talk uses "carny" terms. :)

I appreciate these people who not only take the time to make a 9 hour teaching lecture but also release all of the wonderful tricks these people create.

You basically explained what a Masterclass with Max feels like, its not “the tricks” its the insight and inspiration. Sounds lame but its like a magical Tony Robbins, you listen to him talk and feel better about your craft, with a deeper understanding. Also his masterclass is usually 250€ and is 6 to 8 hours, this is 150€. If you ever wanted to go to a Max Maven class this is a valuable option I believe

Agreed about Max. I downloaded one of his tricks on Penguin and found him really genuine and interesting. I do think he’s toned down the “character” a little over the years. He seems to be doing more of a Kreskin type thing. As far as his knowledge of magic history, he’s on a Rich Jay level.

I saw the title, am a huge pro wrestling fan and magician, and knew I had to click. Glad you mentioned the terms meaning and gave a brief background.

magicorthodoxy I have Dugan's signature! That's long ago. Also I've got a question about magic and being a magician if you don't mind answering. Is it okay for a person to simply learn magic tricks and history just for that? I rarely perform to people and wonder if it's a bizarre thing or not. I've got three good magician friends and though out of them in performance I may be the weekest, I know much of the subject. I love the art that is magic.

I would pay good money to see Max laughing maniacally next to a damsel tied to a train track. Personally I love his character and sense of humor. But regardless of how you feel about his character, the theory he brings forward is insane. Multiplicity completely changed how I present several routines. This is the last Max Maven DVD set (that I know of) I don't have of his. Thanks a lot for the review, it's on my list but I think I'll save it for after I finish the rest of my mentalism backlog.

I totally agree with you, I was never a fan of his. I watched him on magic specials, but not because of him. I always respected him and his craft, I just was never a fan of his. Great review!

be a good performer. practice, practice and practice. all you need is 10 good tricks.

@@philipnguyen3107 true, but there will be a time when some input from a guy like Max is wanted, especially if you're self taught ( books videos ) and don't have a magic store or magic club nearby to get feedback. I do think your advice to perfect a few tricks rather than learning a 100 tricks badly is under represented today. Max will help you get closer to perfection. The interviews are where he delves into magic theory and to me that is where the value of the set is.

Similar to workshop offered by Juan Tamariz sometimes in magic conventions, which I attended twice since 2011. The main focus is not the tricks, as Juan stressed that there are more important things in magic other than how it is done (secrets.) It is understandable the young generations does not like this DVD because they are the generation who need instant satisfaction. Give them some time in future when they found out secret cannot improve their magic they will come back for this DVD set. The only problem is will they still do magic at that time is another problem. Peace.
