It is now so many years ago i forget - i tried to get him to come and perform for my company party. Live just a few miles away from where he he lived in Bristol. We are talking WAY before any TV. Such a shame i never finalized it. I saw him so may time in the early years. A master. I had this video and was blown away by the dexterity. Personally i most enjoyed his mentalism work when it was done on others. But when he told your your pin code.... or drew something randomly you could not have seen in a tiny room. Epic. He and Tim Minchen remain 2 of my very few heroes....

I just started the video so I don't know if you're going to cover it or not. And yes, it's unfortunate that he has never become super popular in the U.S. but one trick he did really ruined his reputation here. I was watching it live when it happened. He was in New Jersey and the trick was Russian roulette with a real gun and bullets. But during the show so many people thought it was real. Lol. And they all called the police. And the police rushed there and then subsequently it was revealed that it was blanks used. People were really mad that they were tricked. Not sure why they expected him to really use real bullets but somehow people were pissed that they were filled and that he wasn't using real bullets. And then the second thing why he isn't popular here is that he was exposed like criss angel was for hiring actors. Which yes he has done many times and it doesn't really bother me so much but I would much rather see just random people in the trick. But the tricks he was doing would never have worked with random people. They had to be in on the trick for it to work. So there's that too. But I really have no problem with Darren. I like him and he's definitely entertaining. But he's definitely done a few things like the Russian roulette and hiring actors that doesn't sit well with a lot of people. So those are really the main factors in him not being so popular here. But I think he's great. He's done some really cool things.
@Potts1966
@Potts1966 Год назад
@@egroegartfart Agreed. He's done some amazing TV work, but there were a few dodgy ones. The Russian Roulette one wasn't good and the hypnotism one where you were not supposed to be able to stand up was another, but he was doing things that had never been seen on TV before, so you can't expect it to be great every time. I did see him live and it was hands down the most stressful experience I've ever had in a theatre. Even though I know him picking the seat numbers from a tombola was a force and stooges had to have been used, but when he was mixing the tombola to pick out a random seat number, I was so stressed in case he picked my seat that I vowed never to see him live again, it was just too much for me to be comfortable with :)
@egroegartfart
@egroegartfart Год назад
@@Potts1966 thanks Bob. That is so awesome that you got to see him perform live. I would love to see him one day. I didn't mean for it to sound like I don't think his shows are great. They absolutely are great. He's very creative and such a performer. I've been a student of magic for many years and I can tell when something seems up or sketchy or maybe if the magician is using stooges. I'm usually pretty good at catching it. And I really don't mind most of the time. I'm watching to be entertained. And I don't think there's any law that says as an entertainer that you have to disclose how your trick was done or even who your assistants are. It's entertainment. But most people have absolutely no idea how magic is done and when they find out a magician they watch has been exposed for fake tricks or using stooges they actually get butt hurt. So where I don't really have a big problem with it, a lot of people do. Maybe because they feel like they've been tricked on top of being tricked. Lol. They get tricked by the magic act and then find out they've also been tricked into thinking the people were not random or volunteers but we're actually in on it. And a lot of people don't understand that. Maybe that's a personal decision magician's make whether they will use stooges or not. I know that if I were a magician I would not use them. Just not how I roll. Lol. But magicians do. I think there's situations where it's not acceptable to use stooges. And situations where it is acceptable I guess. But I have always liked Darren. And would love to see him one day. I talk way too much. Lol. Sorry . Have a good day bob.
@Potts1966
@Potts1966 Год назад
@@egroegartfart Hey Benji. I didn't think you thought his shows weren't great. He's pushing the limits of what can be done on TV so he can't get it perfect every time. Live he is brilliant and if you ever see him live I defy you not to be stressed when he's slowly turning the tombola that has every seat in the house on a separate piece of paper ready to pick a "random" seat. You know it won't be you, but it maybe could be! And then he's telling the person in that seat intimate secrets about themselves. He does it so well. The whole show was really good, but so stressful. Personally I love to know how magic is done, what's the secret? What sleight of hand or mechanism is involved. I've seen Penn and Teller live a few times and it's always a great show, enhanced for me by knowing the skill involved in the deception for their illusions that I know the secret of and being mystified, trying to work out the illusions that I can't figure out. Don't worry about talking too much, I do too lol.

Derren is in London and performs card to box with hypnotism, it will make you want to stop doing card magic because his effect is absolutely unreal. 1 card 1 box. The spectator is hypnotized and the spectator themselves takes the card out of the box and places it underneath and forgets about it. Spectator is then amazed how the card could have gone under the box!

Saw him live and my wife volunteered me for the stage (I swear I didn't want to - on stage, not go) Few people on stage, lots of shuffling of stuff - then some tasks and then a long finale of predictions rising to crescendo. Bit that stuck with me the was the disjoint between the experience of us on the stage and the audience watching us. We were nervously trying not to screw up - complete simple tasks, follow clear instructions, answer simple questions - and on one set of confirmations, the audience went wild. Just as he asked, I suddenly realized what was going to happen. I had an answer to hand as easy as giving my name when asked - and there's a microsecond where you realise you could destroy it all by saying something else, but with the question in the air, an audience infront of you, music swelling and and no reason to want to spoil it - even if you could think find something else to say - you comply - and everyone is happy.

Derren Brown's patter is perfection. So many magicians blow through it. Every single word choice, inflection, body movement Derren does means something. You can't tell if you're being tricked mentally or by sleight of hand. It's so tough to follow everything. You feel *compelled* to do what he suggests, even if your gut is screaming not to. Love this man.

Hey Chris, great video and a testament to the genius of Derren. I live in the UK and saw him live last October and it was a joy to watch him perform in the flesh. I don't know if you know but Andy Nyman, an extremely accomplished and well respected magician in his own right, is Derren's writing partner. They've collaborated on so many of his live shows, TV specials and appearances etc. Andy really is easily at least 50% of what you see with Derren. Andy is a friend of mine and it would be great if you could make a video about him as a magician and his contributions towards the Derren Brown we see and love. Andy is a very lovable guy also and I had the pleasure of working with him on Ghost Stories the film. An adaptation of his successful stage play of the same name. I saw this video as more of a bootleg many years ago. Nice to see it so un-blurry! I do a lot of memdeck work (a la Juan Tamariz) but I use Derren's method of card memorization, which I think is superior to just about any other method out there. He didn't invent it per se, but he blended two memdeck methods so you can recall card and location in either direction (name a card, know the direction, or name a number and know what card is there) with exactly the same level of ease. It's strange because of all the TV shows he did post Y2K, I've only seen him do a memdeck trick one time, and it was super-subtle. PS: His version of Smoke with Stephen Fry is what he called the best-case scenario, so when you watch it, it seems *way* more impossible than the version in this video. If you never learn to do a trick or effect from Derren Brown, learn his ability to use patter to steer you clear away from the method. Most people don't realize most of the time he's explaining how to do a trick, it's not how he did it, even though the explanation could work just as well. When he doesn't do that, you get an unexpected encore trick that he "forgets how its done" but was completely managed through the part of the trick he did explain. That's a signature of his... maybe Easter Eggs for magicians, because even the best magicians and mentalists out there are watching for his every move.

He's the opposite of Kris Angel in many ways, self deprecating whilst showing off, and can amaze you right under your nose!

Wow. Can't wait to watch this upload when I have time. I was going to post a comment asking you to do a Derren vid after you mentioned him during your Juan Tamariz vid. I was lucky enough to see him perform in London on New Year's eve. He's been huge in the UK for 20 years, but I have no idea what international opinion of him is.

That last 3 person routine gave me more to learn than anything I’d ever read or watch. The problem was, taking those techniques and making my own routine, when I knew a perfect composition was out there

Derren Brown is just absolutely unreal in ever sense, so glad to see this video and I really hope he sees this video and the comments and notices how loved he is. He is the greatest magician and seems like such an unbelievably nice guy, so blessed to have seen him live. Legend 🐐

I remember studying him as a teenager to try to better understand and hone my craft as a magician. Him and David Blane inspired me to go out into the streets and perform. I got to see him perform live where he got an audience member to put a plastic bag over his head before he walked across glass. And while he is the greatest showman of our era, nothing brings me more joy that watching these old close up routines of his, amazing piece of nostalgia. Thanks for sharing this with the laypeople!

Brit checking in; as a longtime fan of Derren and his work, it’s a real thrill to see him getting props from this channel. More exposure for DB can only be a good thing - Chris this series is such a generous thing to do, we all very much appreciate you shining a light on some amazing artists who really deserve it.

Derren Brown is just awe inspiring. I have followed his career since 2000 (Mind Control) and have had the pleasure of seeing a few of his live shows. And, yes, his books are wonderful..... lets face it he is just a splendid human being .

Been a fan Derren for years, and remember most of those routines from a low res video I managed to get back in the day. I've seen him with one of his stage shows and it's incredible, it's not sleight of hand and sleight of mind, so clever.

Around 20:15 when you say, "That move at the end," are you talking about the move at the end, or the move at the end-end? 😉 That was so much fun to watch. The whole upload, I mean. I love watching someone who's watching something that they are completely passionate about. Your face through that entire video was a damn delight, Chris. Thanks for sharing!

I saw Derren live in my home town about 12 years ago, cost about £25 a ticket, in Manhattan 3 years ago to buy a ‘ can I see him tomorrow’ ticket it was about $300 . He deserves all the adulation, the guy is devoted to his craft and makes it look effortless.

I've always loved Brown's ability to get you to trust him for ANYTHING, even as you know you're going to be deceived and how full of shit he can be. You almost feel guilty putting your guard up around him. He's also maybe my favorite magician ever. And I think he indirectly changed my life. In one of his specials (that I can't remember, nor do I remember the context at the moment), he paraphrases a line from David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest: "You'll become far less concerned with what others think about you when you realise how little they do." (something like that.) For most of my life, I was probably far too self-consious and felt like I was probably worse in social interactions than I ever actually was. Once I heard that line, and it just always lingered with me, it became kind of an unsaid mantra to stop thinking about what your every move is and just go, because you're not going to be the center-point of everyone's experiences because you're already trying not to be. And if you are? It's not going to be for anything bad, either, because you had a good time or made a good impression. For many years, I think everyone would describe me as an introvert, and my hobbies are still more solo stuff. I just did a social media poll and now 80% describe me as an extrovert. At some point, I got less concerned with concern and more joyful having joy. If I didn't watch Derren, I don't get that mindset.
