Today I'll be painting the latest 3D printed set by Artisan Guild, their Minoc warriors. I decided to try something different, and used contrast paints and a simple dry brush to create a fun magical armor look.

Glad you liked it. The oil wash is great fun to use. Pretty much using it on all my prints now.

Great video! Here's a few painting tips-- you can make your own contrast paints with acrylic paint, acrylic matte medium, and a drop of flow improver will give you something similar, if not better the big name paints. Apparently acrylic inks will net you some of the best results. There's an excellent video from Goobertown Hobbies that goes over contrast paints. I picked this one up from Marco Frisoni, but acrylics can be added to metallics to create color metallics. The recipe does involve adding some black and brown to the mix, but it creates some amazing effects.

Then you’ve come to the right place 😃 Really enjoy using them. Currently do a video on Army Painter speed paints, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

I think the wash looks great on the blue armour, but kind of clashes with the skin. It's great that you're experimenting with it regardless! That gold recipe is excellent, looks really nice. They all turned out great. Seeing them lined up finished with an efficient paint scheme motivates me to get slay the grey on my end. Thanks for sharing! I'm looking forward to see what you work on next :)

Thanks, glad you liked how they turned out. Definitely going to be having a play with different washes next and see what looks good on different models.

A zenithal highlight would work well and give you that extra dimension to your paint job…. That said, they look really good. I’ve got these Minotaurs and thought I wouldn’t print them, maybe I might now?!

Definitely worth giving them a print. I wasn't interested but ended up really enjoying them.

Hi, I think a magenta oil wash on the skin would be a good choice, and for the gold a burnt umber, and the blue a dark blue/black mix to really push those shadows further. I varnish before oil washes. Contrast paints can be quite delicate and I want to be able to rub the wash off without much care. I find makeup sponges the best at removing oils, you can cut them to size and also to use them again you cut off the stained parts when dry. Maybe a more rich gold such as Retributor Armour would have given a more believable deeper gold? Then finish with Liberator Gold edging?

One thing I have found is because Contrast paints dry fairly quickly, the direction you are holding your miniature as you apply the paint makes a difference. If you want it to flow downwards on the miniature (the pooling will appear darker so you usually want that on lower areas - such as the belly of a horse - so hold the horse with the feet down the entire time you are painting - it really made a difference). Possibly adding some retarder and a drop of flow-aid would help so it does not dry as fast?

Try using a Magenta wash next time!

Its not 100% to my taste because the result is a little pale. However, it really suits these models and is a great guide to fast technique. Thanks
