I shoot a black widow recurve, 50 lbs @32"draw. I shoot Black Eagle Deep impact arrows 34"long. Most arrows aren't long enough. I was talking to Michael Treadway at TBOF shoot, and a guy came up and asked Michael if he had any longbows @ 65 lbs or better? Michael asked what for? The man said he was going hunting for Elk. Michael showed him his personal longbow that was 45 lbs the guy said it was gorgeous but not enough poundage. Micheal replied...well it shot completely through an Elk last year, just gotta hit right.

My one elk was killed with my 53 lb Black widow recurve at 35 yards. It entered behind the last rib and penetrated a few inches out the front shoulder. It was a Zwicky Eskimo broadhead. He went 60 yards.

A few years ago I walked into an archery shop. The owner had died and his wife was selling out. There was 2 old faded packages of zwickey black diamonds. I bought them all for $10 and still shoot them off my 50# longbow I made from Osage orange.

My last two deer were killed with my 50# recurve and magnus 125 gr. Killerbees. I used the same arrow and broadhead for both a few days apart. I switched this year to my 65# wildcat 2 so hopefully it will draw blood in the morning. Tomorrow is NC opening day. Thank you for the awesome informative video btw.

I do think that first hitting the minimum of the State/Province you are in is important for big game, then go from there. However, I do think that in case of South Dakota (where I live) and Pennsylvania that 30 pounds for Deer at least is too light and a minimum of 35 pounds is best unless one was using a very high FPS performance compound bow at/over 310 FPS as tested with own gear. You can get away with under 35 pounds for Turkey in these two states but only if you have good aim and hit in general vital area around 80% or higher.

I killed many deer using the Muzzy 90rn 4bld. They always flew perfect, making shot placement right, they never failed.me. I live on ground that was an old Indian settlement. The Indians used to do a lot of trading with Pilgrims and settlers. Many of my past neighbors have found tables full of arrow heads, spear heads and hatchet head rocks. I have only been blessed to have found one arrow head. I try to take it with me when I hunt every season in my area.

Robert, those small stone points are often called “bird points” by collector’s. Several folks have done experiments with them (Billy Berger has a RU-vid vid on this), and they certainly will penetrate vitals and kill deer. The small heads have several advantages, mostly that they are easier to produce and shoot from lighter bows. I enjoy your content. Thank you
@DavidBridge-u8d
@DavidBridge-u8d 10 месяцев назад
You are hunting with the same mentality as the native Indians had to have so it makes sense They had to make their own stuff and it had to work They would sharpen their heads by chipping the side to make an edge and they could get them pretty sharp They had to eat so they knew how to hunt and where to make lethal shots

I hate to correct you so directly, sir. But that bare razor you had you held up was a Bear Super Razorhead SS. That's the stained steel screw in version of the older Bear.Razorhead that glued on to wooden shafts. I killed three muledeer with those back in the eighties. Unfortunately the stainless steel version did not live up to the legacy of the even older Bear Razorheads. The old carbon steel heads would almost never bend like that, but the new stainless steal ones were known to.

Everything I’ve ever hit well with my 40lb limbs is dead and they died quick. 30 or 40lb more wouldn’t have killed em any better! Shoot a bow you can handle well and take responsible shots with it, not fire off arrows all over the place from a bow you can’t handle.

Ötzi the Iceman from about 3300 B.C. had a bow and a quiver of arrows with him. From the looks of it, he was very successful with that setup - not one piece of metal, carbon fiber and no gears and pulleys. I'll stick with my stickbow and stay traditional as I can for pigs, deer, turkey, elk.... Love your site.

When I was a kid in the 60s, I'd find the tiny heads and we called them bird heads, no idea for sure. I'd trade them for 22 shells. Had everything but the Simmons and still use most of them. Also have some Deadheads, rather big wide heads. Killed a lot of game with the various two blade bear heads from glue on to stainless steel Razorhead lights. Actually shot a doe between the eyes one time with about a 35 lb bow. I shot down at her and she raised her head up as I did, the arrow punched out and barely into her ribs, still have that skull with the arrow in it. and yes, you have to pick a spot and hit that spot to be the good hunter. The first really good longbow that I ever shot and wish that I still had was a 45# Dan Quillian Bamboo Longhunter. it was a very sweet shooting bow and I took a lot of game with it. it got stolen. The gnats are a part of life for a lot of us and like you, they get very old very quickly. I shoot mostly 45# and less with several bows 42# or less. Shot placement with sharp heads is the most important thing, too many are simply over bowed. And yes, stay within your best abilities on distance. Harder for them to jump the string at 8 yards and if you were already aiming low for the heart, you are still very good at such short distances. The problem that you have my friend, is that you have common sense and use it. This old world seems to have lost most of the common sense. Shine on Brother

I remember when I first started trad hunting the bow I shot was about 80ish pounds at my draw length and it was fun to shoot but the draw weight was so heavy that you couldn't practice for long periods of time and when I did different tests with the same arrows it had the same penetration as my 45lb bow.

It has been told by my family members who spent a lot of time on the reservation in cherokee nc, those little points that folks call bird points were most likely put on 12 inch or less stems that were inserted into cane arrows and atlatl darts. When used for small game they got clean kills with plenty of penatration.misses could get them a broken stem but the arrow itself and even the head would be more protected.

I know what you mean, with my draw I am a 24--24.5 inch draw and with one bow I have OEELINE Airobow One Piece 56 inch Recurve (bow does not have a model name on Amazon) Is that I was drawing 35--37 pounds with a 45 pound bow so I had to find a bow that would work for me, I did am soon getting (ordered a back in September) a 24 inch draw Youth Longbow from GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY in the Hickory limb option, they have on the site, had I known I could have got as a special order a the Youth Bow with Eastern Red Cedar for the limbs that they do some kind of stabilization to work as part of the bow limbs better, but I will be happy with just having a bow work for my needs.

Hey Robert, I suspect those small points were glued or hafted as a razor tip on to a larger bone or wood point and fixed onto the arrow as a foreshaft. It could have been bow or atlatl. They have found complete specimans melting out of the ice in the Yukon. The bone section was usually barbed. I know it seems like a long way but it is amazing how similar technology and trade was even 10,000 years ago. I have never heard of blow guns being used in North America. I am interested now though!

I could literally listen to you speak all day. Everything you say is spot on. I’ve said it for years, there is no such thing as a magic broadhead. A gut shot animal, is a gut shot animal. You can shoot a 90 lbs bow, pool stick sized arrow with a 300 grain 4” cut broadhead. But if you hit the deer through the paunch, same results. All these broadhead review videos where the guys shooting broadheads through plywood, tires, concrete block etc, is a bunch of bologna. I’ve killed deer with Muzzy, Wasp, Grim Reapers, Rage, Swhackers, Magnus, Fixed blade and mechanical. When you hit an animal where you’re supposed to and let the air out of them, they don’t go anywhere and usually fall within sight. Broad heads aren’t necessarily “junk” because you shoot it in a video through 5/8” thick plywood and a blade bent…… Great video !!!!!

My first longbow was 53#. (HOWARD HILL BIG FIVE). I tried to hand sharpen different broad heads, but initially only had success with a Snuffer. That was because I was using a knife sharpening stone bridging two out of three blades. I sharpened until I could no longer see any machine marks on the blade.(I used a black felt tip on the blades before sharpening.) I thought that I was all set until a cross wind came up and I saw the Snuffer equipped arrows dart away from the wind direction! I had tried to sharpen Howard Hill broad heads, but never could get them sharp. I had also tried sharpening Grizzly broad heads, but ended up giving up and dulling both edges to use them for 3D deer target practice. The Grizzly broad heads have a single steep one sided bevel, and one day I got the idea of trying to sharpen the back side of a Grizzly with just a couple of light passes with the file. I had dulled all my Grizzly broad heads, but decided to give it a try anyway. After but two light passes on the back side of the single bevel I ran my finger along the edge and it cut my finger! Amazing! Those broad heads had been absolutely dull, but... I had found the answer to my multi year search for a broad head with good flight characteristics with a very tough blade.

Those last couple of points are arrow heads. Most all the others are atlatl points, even the smaller ones. Atlatl points got smaller over the years but real arrowheads are very tiny. Under 3/4" or 1/2" wide usually (better penetration). Many have been DNA tested and they found big game DNA like deer, elk and bison....crazy right. But if you put them in the right spot they are lethal. It's hard to live with collapsed lungs ...

For Big 3 blade heads, Woodsman have heads like this, in glue on and in screw on depending on the arrow and NAP has the screw on head then G5 has a Monatec that is shorter but just as wide if not wider.

I believe those very small points were used on Arrows and some of your larger points were used on spears I’m definitely no expert just what I have been told by a couple friends

Well Mr. Robert Carter I couldn't agree with you more ... I've been at this Bow hunting game almost 50 years now, and I totally agree with everything you said and even preached it a little !! Those tiny heads were called "Bird Points" I believe ? But supposable used on big game for the same reasons you stated, light weight bows with small sharp heads equaled penetration. Another good head is one cut out of a table saw blade ! Two Blade heads have fed mankind for thousands of years right.

I have most of those heads in my boxes. No magic pixie dust, get close, aim small, put it where it counts.

I agree with you that shot placement is the key. You can take an old spoon and make a broadhead out of it and kill a deer if you send it through the vitals. Trade points have killed many animals. Great video!

I use the Zwickey Eskimo that I'm not particularly good at sharpening, and I've never had a good hit go more than 100 yards. I don't recall any of them being destroyed, and I've hit the dirt plenty of times. My daughter's first bow kill was with a 35 lb bow, definitely not drawing at 28 inches, but the shot was straight down into the boiler room.

I'm terrible at sharpening. Luckily I have an old school uncle just like the guy in this video. He helped me glue on my zwickey deltas and sharpen them with a bone breaking chisel tip. I need a V-jig with files screwed in between .. he does it all freehand with a mill bastard file. Then pulls out his oils and the end. Every knife he has is wicked sharp. If you pull out your edc, First thing he'll do is run his nail or his calloused thumb up and down it and he'll go "yuhp, that isn't sharp" lol.

@@rustyshackleford3487 drive on up to MN! All playing aside, I have someone who can teach me, but it's still difficult. It's interesting watching him work on those zwickeys with all the metal you have to initially take off to get a straight cutting edge. Mine are always uneven. And then forget the razor edge part. Respect to those who can keep a bevel. I like your comment too about your daughter and her #35 bow. Uncle Scotts biggest buck ever was taken with a #35 Herters. Have a good hunting season!

The Bear razorheads, I used to file the point off of them, and put a 1/8 to 3/16 radius on them and resharpen them, they won’t bend then.

Whatever you use to hunt with, shot placement is everything. Hit one too far back and you're liable not to find it, no matter what you're shooting.

I pretty much agree. Now I do Elk Hunt with a longbow. I have shot through a handful of them. High poundage and light arrows with Magnus Stingers. So, I also was doing something these "Gurus" said you can't do. My total arrow probably weighed 450 maybe. As for hogs I have killed tons of them. I never found a hog that could take a reasonable shot from a Tradbow.

Thank you for sharing all your practical information. We really only learn by doing or listening to the ones who share wisdom. So thank you. I’d like to share something with you that I learned from a Cherokee old timer. Those arrowheads that we find? We usually find em by a creek or maybe somewhere good to sit. Somebody learning to make them left there practice arrowheads there. The little ones? They were made by little ones and they’re very special.
