Awesome video, so glad the videos are still coming . This is exactly what I've been struggling with before season. Have both and penetration is number one. And not at the cost of blood trail.
Jeff I can't tell you buddy how good it is to see you back on here again, and that your health seems to being doing better. Just wanted to let you know that the bow is shooting awesome. I have been shooting for 64 years and have never had so much fun shooting a bow. It's true, "They shoot where your looking." This video is really interesting and informative. That penetration on those broadheads is pretty amazing. Thanks Jeff for another great video, and wishing you and Ty the best. Keep em' coming and hang in there and we'll talk to you guy's later. Jim
Glad your still helping us out with your insight I am now 76 and have been in and out of instinctively shooting since early teens tried compound but just couldn’t find using sights and release and kept coming back to mysterious satisfaction of my recurves and long bows and especially my fingers and freedom of instinctively Thanks for your videos I always get something from your perspective and was thinking because of your circumstances from your last video we would lose your inspiration and I was so happy to discover this one today Thanks and good luck to you and yours My current favorite is my Ferguson made by Bear @ 48# my draw length
Hey Jeff, very glad to see you are back.Back in October you did a tutorial about sharpening the 3 Blade VPA with D M T diamond folding sharpeners.Could u possibly do a RU-vid showing this again?
Might want to shoot in a area that has not been shot before. I don’t think it will matter. But you know some will say the bull’s-eye has been shot out more and allows the 3 blade to penetrate more.
I've taken 2 foam broadhead targets & stacked them back to back. I got the same results Jeff got. 2 targets thick u get a more uniform medium & I got the same results. Wound channel & edge retention is a real thing. Higher grade tool stool which is harder to get a sharp edge on is like the universe. The trade off is when u get it sharp that it is also harder to get dull.
I must agree that the 3 blade vpa is a killer broadhead. I Used them all last season and Will do so again this year. Thanks For great info as usual Jeff!
Great video, thanks for sharing! First year I've ever hunted with a recurve - and just took my 1st deer ever - used a 135gr Zwickey and it did the job out of my ~42lb setup. I'm definitely interested in trying out these blades next time I am buying broad heads.
Glad to see you back, pray that all is well with your family as well. I also agree with your results as a whole, especially the blood trail part. I am now shooting in the 38# to 43# group and am using three blade Woodsman. Keep em coming Brother
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Amen, sharp and where you hit them! Guys like us are blessed so very much, in spite of what may be happening. Sometimes we have to ask for our eyes to be opened to see the blessings but they are there. And He is still very much in the miracle business my Brother
I made a perfect shot on a nice doe a number if years ago and was amazed at the lack of blood. After that I always shot 3 blade and got the blood trail I wanted. Now the single bevel craze has got me second guessing myself so this video has helped my confidence that 3 blade is the way to go.
I shot a doe with my compound and single bevel iron will 150 grain last year. Perfect double lung shot . She ran 80 yards and died on the run and never left a drop of blood
Great video Jeff! This is my first year getting seriously into traditional and I have planning on going with 200 grain grizzle’s but now I’m reconsidering 🤔. Those vpa’s look like the real deal and reasonably priced too. I can’t wait for the season and Jesus is so good. Thanks again for the valuable info
People! This post is excellent and outstanding and the content will make you a better bow Hunter however, notice the shot sequence and the release and how consistent it is each time from shot to shot ! Archers! This is how it’s done! Thank You 🙏! 🏹🦌🏹🐗🏹🦌🏹🐗
Awesome information! I have been tinkering with my feather fletching and I think I hit the mother load! I am using 2 -5” left helical fletch and they spin like rifle bullets with out drag and are amazing accurate! I am doing the dance! I am gluing them with a 90 degree twist. 😊
Definitely food for thought, I will put this in the hair covered computer, assimilate this information a bit and say great study , it keeps us guessing on the right choices but we must continue feeding are brains to become a tad bit more proficient each season. Glad your back , love your work here, your awesome God blessed you that way to continue too help us analytical toxopholites.
Jeff, glad your back! One thing come to thought, the 3 blade was shot in the most shot up area of the target. As the arrows get farther away from center there is less penetration. Like to see the test with all the arrows shot in a new part of the target. I still think it will be between the 3 blade and the 2 blade single bevel. Again glad your back!!
Gald your back. I hope someone buys your bow design so it can still be brought to market. On the subject, I had zero blood from a 2 blade last year. Not exaggerating, it wasn't a lung, but a liver shot. Had snow on the ground, so was able to follow tracks of the deer with ease. She ran 60 yards, laid down and expired. I was unable to find a spot of red on the white carpet of snow. I went with Iron Will Wides this year with bleeders....I will see how they do.
Hey buddy I've missed you and I'm glad you're back Once again great video You can leave us again Only when you go to sleep But you still gotta Check in Gotta tell my friends you are back
Awesome review on the 3 blade. I am going to buy those vpa heads for this season now … trying to get my first recurve kill with the 45# drawing 43#. I would love to see you review the tuffhead 3 blade head from Sirius archery sometime!
Jeff, your analysis is Spot on! You will get some hate mail on this. ButI have killed a hundred or more deer with the heads you tested and many others. The VPA 3 blade is my go to .
The 3 blade went through the most shot up part of that target. Try all 3 again and stay away from the center of the target, move a foot either way into virgin target space
The VPA 200g 3 blade solved my blood trail issue. Was using 2 blade VPA but the 3 killed faster as you said with fantastic trails. Shooting 45# Widow KB and 580g arrow approx. Solved many problems for me. I try to keep my shots 20 and under.
Jeff thank you for the video One thing you didn't touch on was the bleeder blade If I remember right Fred Bear invented it for that vary reason Arrow pinch Then would brake away if hitting hard bone Continue to share your faith brother
The best traditional broadheads I have shot are DEL-MA MA 3's they will stand the test of time fly true and are very easy to sharpen. Had mine since 1978 still have the original six and have killed over 10 deer with them. Also have used many others but always go back to the MA 3 , try them you will not be disappointed.
I recently bought some stingers and noticed the bulk of the ferrule immediately. It tapers too quickly. I doubt it would cause much issue on deer but I’m sure it decreases penetration. I think it’s to help make their broad heads so tough. Overall, still a great broadhead but I agree the ferrule is decreasing penetration.
Sweet! Just picked up some 150gr VPA 3 blades. Hope to use them this season. How did the tips hold up on the VPA 3 blades that hit bone? I know Tuffheads have the pyramid tips on their 3 blades.
I'm kinda wanting to take up bow hunting, though I'll need to become a much better shot than I am now. And I'm generally thinking of going with a 3-blade.
Except the broadheads are all near the center of a shot up target, with the three blade in the weakest part of the target. Interesting to say the least.
I have wasp broadheads that have a removable bleeder blade. So they have a small bleeder blade toward the back of the broadhead. Should I remove the bleeder with a 42lb bow? Or leave it ?
The thick ferrule on the 150 magnus always bothered me but I still use them because i can't get a Zwickey as sharp. I wonder how a slimmer two blade like an Eskimo would have faired up in the test given it's much flatter profile? I avoid 3 blades due to my 41lb limitation. If I was up around 45lb's I would have been shooting a 3 blades all this time. Jeff, can you speak on 2 blades vs 3 blade on bows @40lbs? I'd be very interested in your opinion of that.
What are your thoughts on a Simmons broad heads. I shoot a 43# hybrid longbow 27 1/4 draw length, I shoot gold tip velocity shafts 500 spine 6.3 gr. Per inch. which one would you get for my set up Thanks and God bless
Great video but I suggest you get a brand new flat target. The target you used has the center shot out and the arrows could have entered the area with previous holes. You need a new target and shoot at least 5 groups to get a more accurate comparison. Just me feedback. Love your videos. Be safe and God Bless!
i think the 3 blade head just created a bigger hole for the arrow to go through, less friction on the arrow shaft itself. if you had a much thicker target that the head would not exit the back, the results would be different and the 3 blade would penetrate less than the 2 blade due to the larger cutting diameter of the 3 blade head.
Good test.. but, since that target has been shot up in center it kind of seems the one hitting center would pass thru further than others to the side of center.. A side by side ballistic gel blocks one for each arrow would give a more reliable or more accurate representation. Ive been using bear razor heads for almost 50 yrs with close to 100 success so had never given much thought to switching but now Im curious to maybe try a 3 blade..
Great video and 3 bladed arrowheads are a very old design. The scythians used them and they look very alike to basic 3 bladed modern heads. They must have also realized the same thing, that 3 blades increase the hole size and blood loss
I just subscribed to your channel, I really liked this video. Please, one question, how many pounds does that bow you have tested have? Greetings from Spain. Thanks.
I personally will never go back to a two blade head. I used zwickey and magnus for years.....a perfect shot was always a kill but I've had some seriously hard tracking jobs because a two blade slit allowed a glob of fat to clog the hole.....great shot and poured the blood out gutting then.....but the wensel woodsman. Has never let me down ever.
hi mr jeff.. if you do the test with a smaller shaft then the bevel of the 2 blade broadhead the 2 blade penetration is better then the 3 blade but to each his own..have a great day
Yes sir I do not recommend them for one reason, they’re extremely loud in flight unlike a solid non vented head which they do make now but the original vented version will spook game way before the arrow can get to them, we call them whistlers lol thanks brother!
exactly what I've found. I get sick of the 2 blade, single bevel hype as if penetration is everything. however, more inches of sharp edges causes more damage to veins/arteries and leave far better blood trails. and the difference in penetration between 2 blade vs 3-4 blade is very minimal. I much prefer a larger amount of sharp blades over an inch more of penetration.
So i have been using 300 brain Grizzly's for years. They always pass through and they rarely leave a blood trail. They do kill the deer quickly. However i tend to hunt evenings and no blood at night sucks. I shoot a 57# longbow and think i am going to try the VPA!
Thanks for sharing this and yes I’ve experienced this exact thing myself with Grizzly heads, definitely kill but very very little blood trail to follow and it’s never good at night and that’s why I pretty much went to 3-4 blades and Simmons heads but I’m testing a few new things this fall just to see 👍🏻
Yes sir I’ve actually done lots more testing and if the three blade is super sharp it’ll penetrate just as well if not better than a brand new Stinger however I’ve tested some other two blades that don’t have as much of a bulky ferrule and sharp as well penetrate even a little more so I believe that a truly sharp 3 blade like a VPA is hard to beat and it opens a larger wound channel for sure 👍🏻
This vpa head looks just like a wensel woodsman without vents. What would make this a better head than the woodsman? I've killed many deer with Snuffers and Woodsman Bradheads. Far superior to any two blade head I've ever used with an exception of the Simmons interceptors. The muzzy phantoms (no longer made) four blade heads killed deer quicker and had better blood trails than the previous mentioned three blade heads. I finally located some bleeder blades for my old bear green razorheads. I might give those a try this season.
The VPA heads are higher quality steel and machined rather than stamped/welded, so they have tighter tolerances, spin more consistently, and hold an edge better. The woodsmans are a great head, and the VPAs are really more of an incremental improvement rather than an earth shattering one. I believe the Wensels have some higher end models that would be more comparable to VPA, but I'm not positive. The razorheads with bleeders would be a great option, good luck this fall!
So Jeff & everyone else what is your opinion of 3 blades on large moose? I live in Alaska & shoot bows (longbows & recurve) ranging from 52-64# @ my draw length. Glad to see you are doing well & praising Jesus! He is faithful!
Yes sir I’ve never shot a moose but if I was going to I’d want a two blade single bevel really sharp with plenty of FOC just in case but there’s been a bunch killed with 3blades like VPA and as long as they’re sharp they’ll definitely penetrate well 👍🏻
It’s a Bon-A-Fide , I got it at the Tennessee Classic last year they’re awesome and they sell the adhesive faces in lots of cool stuff like deer and everything else 👍🏻
Doing a penetration test with foam is extremely flawed. Foam targets are designed to stop arrows with friction. Shooting critters is a completely different ballgame.
