Purchase my Handmade Watercolors Here the-art-spirit...
Today, I'm Coloring a page from the Magical Jungle Coloring Book by Johanna Basford using Watercolor Paints.
The book is absolutely stunning as all Johanna Basfords Coloring Books are and I've chosen this floral design for my first attempt at watercolor in one of her books.
So this is my first go at watercoloring a page from one of the Johanna Basford coloring books and it worked very well considering this is not watercolor paper. I'm delighted with the results and it was a pleasure to paint. I will definitely be doing more watercolor paintings in these coloring books in the future and I will also be trying a combination of watercolor paint plus colored pencil.
I absolutely love using colored pencils but this was a lot quicker and easier with the watercolor paint and it was very relaxing and therapeutic. I would definitely recommend trying out watercolor in these books. Even if you normally use colored pencil and don't want to give that up, you could use a combination of the two. A good idea would be to lay down a base colour with the watercolors and then colored pencil on top of that for finer details and shading.
The paints that I used in this video are the Winsor and Newton Cotman Watercolour Paints.

Hi, I really liked watching this video. It’s mesmerising to see the picture come to life as you add new layers. I especially enjoyed the last layer with the fine brush.

How funny! I just put watercolor in my Amazon basket to try it out on my Magical Jungle (and learning to paint landscape). I did one today using Derwent inktense pencils and was amazed at how well the paper was doing. There's a very special feeling when holding a paint brush! Great video!

Thanks very much. I had a similar coincidence happen today. After I uploaded this video, I seen that Johanna Basford had actually just uploaded a video of herself colouring this exact picture just an hour earlier on her own channel. I couldn't believe it lol :-)

Really lovely! I will try watercolor in one of my Johanna books. Not sure if the American version has paper that will hold up this well.

Oh Wow!!Rebecca that is stunning,really it is ,gosh it certainly gives me inspiration. You see that just shows where artistry comes into play ,where I'd have stopped painting,there you go adding deeper colours giving it depth and dimension. (my god I sound like some art critic!!!)Anyhow it's gorgeous, aye well done lass ha ha P'S have you seen preview of Joanna Basford Xmas edition,oh can't wait for mine to arrive!

Oh thanks Lass!!! Your comment's really do make me laugh out loud :-) You sound like a proper art critic, you know what you're talking about :-) I really really enjoyed painting this and because it was a lot faster than coloured pencils, it didn't get tedious. I don't know about you but sometimes I get a bit bored if a colouring takes too long. I start off full of enthusiasm and then finishing it feels like a chore but not with these watercolours. Goodbye coloured pencils (just kidding). I did see the Johanna Basford Xmas edition, I think I'll get it ordered now and I might order imagimorphia as well. I was watching somebody else paint in imagimorphia and it looks amazing. She's called bunnydesigns. I don't know if you've heard of her but I found her channel yesterday and her colourings are really lovely. I think she just does watercolour.

When I get my desk set up, I will. At the moment it's rather mobile and that doesn't lend itself to consistent coloring/painting.

oh that's a relief that you get a bit bored if a piece of work takes to long to colour,I feel guilty if I start thinking ooh, wish I was finished this.However what I do is grab my promarkers and let rip on my Creative Haven colouring books ,of which I have many,surprise surprise! !! Just go for it bright colours ,let them clash ,I don't care,love them!! That's why I'm looking forwards to Joanne xmas book as they're just single sided so I can use my alcohol markers on them.I enjoy using the colouring pencils but only purchased them because most of the books are double sided,so of course one simply had to have them ha ha Oh there's so many colouring artists to watch ,plus I love watching card making tutorials too,and I ve just subscribed to Paul Nicholls (racehorse trainer) youtube channel as that's another love of mine (and hubby)is racing,so every Sat afternoon off we go galloping and jumping for miles ha ha ,on tv that is! .Will look out for that watercolour artist you mentioned .Take care

Creative Haven???? I'm gonna have to look those up now lol. I want to get into card making too but I don't have the time for another hobby so I have told myself no! I want to improve my art so I'm trying to be strict with myself lol.

Nice video. Wondering if the page on the back of your watercolored page is still ok? I've been going to try this, but just haven't yet.

Thank you. Yes, the back of the page is fine. No colour has bled through whatsoever and only very slight buckling :-)

What did you use in the last part for the inside of the large pink flower is that a watercolour brush or something else ? Love your work don't know if I would be able to control the paint like you have you done watercolour before?

Beautiful coloring Rebecca. I hesitate to use watercolors in the books, I tried the Derwent Inktense into the Animorphia and the results are not so good! The paper bleeds through and is buckling. Are you sure that this won't happen with the Basford books? TFS this lovely tutorial
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 7 лет назад
Thanks Rita. This was my first try with watercolour in these books. I was really please with how well the paper took the water. No bleed through to the next page at all. The paper buckled a little while wet but dried almost flat again. I was only wetting small sections at a time though. If I were to saturate the whole page, I'm not sure what would happen but I'm going to make a video all about this and do some testing on different books :-)

i had Animorphia but its a Taiwan version, and i had tried using watercolours and watercolours pencils with little water, with no issues at all. But Animorphia and Imagimorphia (release on Mar 2017) has a poster version, that comes with 20 pictures selected from the actual book. I have ordered the Animorphia poster version last week and waiting for it to arrive.

Huh! I have Secret Garden and Enchanted Forest and I have tried watercoloring in them, but it seems like the paper has a coating on it because the watercolor seems to puddle and I didn't notice that happening in your video! Is this a special edition version or just the regular book?Thank you for the video! I love watching you watercolor.
@robincooper9323
@robincooper9323 7 лет назад
The watercolor doesn't puddle, it beads up really. I think that's better wording.
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 7 лет назад
Hi Robin, no it's not a special book, just the regular one. I'm going to try watercolor in some other colouring books including Enchanted Forest and Secret Garden and I will make a video showing the results of that.

Great! Thank you! I look forward to seeing how they do. I just worked in mine last night and used a product called Magic Eraser to help lessen the coating that seems to be on the page. I think it worked fairly well.

Love this video. What detail brushes would you recommend? I am just getting into wet mediums and don't own any brushes yet.
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 7 лет назад
Hi, I would definitely recommend synthetic brushes for detail. Small rounds. Synthetic bristles have a spring to them so you have more control. I can recommend a few good brands. Princeton, Rosemary & Co and Winsor & Newton Cotman II. I mainly use the rounds sizes 5, 3, 1 and 3/0. Hope this helps 😀

Just wandering do you spray fixative or whatever you call it, on you watercolour works after you are done, so that the dont get ruined if water drops on it.

thanks for sharing, amazing colouring. Roughly how many hrs did you spent colouring? Gosh...all that layering.... mind sharing the size of the brush as well? Hopefully....we can see how and/or what colours you use in future video, as its a very good learning experience. And hopefully a slower version or step by step guide with a palette view.

Hi! I was wondering if you might have any tips for me on painting with water colors? Like how to make my colors not so watery...
@TheArtSpirits
@TheArtSpirits 5 лет назад
Hi Jessica, you can make the paint more concentrated by dropping some water on them and letting it soften. Once it's softer, you can get a thicker more pigmented load. Try not to saturate your brush too much. Hope that helps :-)

What is your trick on doing this. I can’t seem to be able to do anything intelligent with water color.
