The MG-II saga continues with a "half-butt" repair attempt. I was able to get the right speaker's tweeter wire working again using leftover parts from an MG-I rebuild kit, but I ran out of the proper solder and wasn't able to make a permanent repair. The left speaker continues to buzz with low frequencies, but that's ok for me since I'm able to remove those using the equalizer in my setup and use a subwoofer.
If you use this video for a repair, do so at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damage or injury.

For anyone watching as a DIY guide, I use too much 30NF on the tweeter wire repair in this video. Use less and the speaker will sound better. Recently, the speaker that had the vibration issue had its tweeter wire fail. I replaced it like you see here, but I used minimal 30NF glue. That speaker sounds a lot better than the other now. So go light on the 30NF with the tweeter wire!

I have SMG maggies and I need to do delamination. The 2 wood side frame came off easy but the top & bottom piece that looks like wood but is actually metal with wood like paint. I can't remove these 2 pieces as it seems stuck. I don't want to pry too hard as it might break the wood panel attached to it. Do you know how to remove these 2 top bottom metal panel?

I had a set of MG 1's and never had to redo them and they are a good speaker but then I got a set of MG 3r's with the ribbon tweeter and the sound stage increased way more than I thought it would. Great job doing the repairs yourself

Great video, came here for basic disassembly of my MG-2B. Adding a ribbon super tweeter section. Making them 3 way should really liven them up. My tweeter section is in good shape but I definitely feel the MG-2 series lacks a lot of highs compared to other series in its stock form.

Send those to magnepan , the Tympani is a whole different beast to work on. They also can modify it . They rebuild mine about 4 years ago , never regretted it

I rebuild them using just white wood glue thinned out a bit. Sound great and is more than the wires need to stay put to the Mylar. Love those Maggies!!

I have a pair of MGIIB's that needs a tweeter repair. I think you motivated me to a fix. Replacing that mylar cap. with a polypropylene (Sonic Cap) will improve detail. Even bypassing it will help. Using tube connectors (GR-reasearch) will also help. Good Luck.

Good luck to you also! Yeah, I will give these a complete redo at some point and replace the caps at that time.

I've had to glue wires down before but never have had to replace the entire wire on these like you do!?
@Coledibiase1978
@Coledibiase1978 2 месяца назад
Yeah that's too much glue, you want the membrane to stay thin and light. The glue stiffens it and weighs it down resulting in less spl and less definition. All in all it will still work.

I think you realized it later but just to make sure anyone who takes this on. You have used WAY(!) to much contact cement brushed on over the tweeter wires. This will dramatically reduce the level of treble produced by the tweeter. I use a fine hobby brush like you would use with the old paint by number prints. All you want is a minimal layer of contact cement(DAP) over the wires themselves. Try to keep the plastic between the wires uncoated. some will get on but just keep to a minimum. I have done 6-7 tweeters over the years. BTW it is Silver Solder you need to solder the Aluminum wires.

Thx for the excellent, helpful video !! .. The many white, crusty corrosion spots seen all over the enameled Aluminum voice coil wires seems disturbing Strange !! I have many Old traditional speakers with Rotted out cones but the Enameled VC wire is perfectly intact with absolutely No corrosion spots or open circuit breaks at all....These were very high end expen$ive speakers at the time using premium Mylar materials & exotic 3M adhesives & other than physical Mylar diaphragm damage or overheated melting & burnout from massive amp Overpowering, should last a lifetime.....I totally Don't understand the massive appearance of the Enameled wire corrosion issue ?? ...I Still have a 1/4 lb wood spool of much finer 32 ga Enameled copper wire I bought 50+ yrs ago that in factory Perfect condition with absolutely No enamel damage or any Corrosion !! ...From normal household use & no flooding damage exposure conditions,.....that Enameled wire should Still be in good condition.....What's going on here & apparently, with a large % of the all other even larger & more espen$ive vintage Magnepan speaker voice coil wire ???

Probably something in the glue deteriorates and reacts with the aluminium wire

Hi, can you tell me the diameter of the wire and what material is in the wires? is any label on the reel that magnepan sent to you?
@AHFixIt
@AHFixIt 3 года назад
The roll for the bass wire says 22 GA and the treble wire says 32 GA. Bass wire has a coating but the treble wire does not. I believe the material is aluminum but I am not positive.

Hello from France. I have MG1 improved and i want repair wire tweeter as you. Where and how buy the different products to realise the job? Thank you very much André

@AHFixIt 2 года назад
Hi André, I go into more detail about where to find the parts in this video series where I work on my MG-1's: ru-vid.com/group/PLs2tF9XnISjKqfxoxcDL7uLSXh2KibQij Basically you need to call Magnepan and they will ship you a kit. Unfortunately they won't do this until the weather warms up where they are located in Minnesota, USA. Otherwise, look for 32GA wire, 3M 30NF glue, and 3M Super 77 spray glue. And the appropriate solder I believe I mention in this video.

@@AHFixIt Français Anglais I will try to organize myself to place an order from France but the only possible contact apparently is the telephone ... and my spoken English is very weak ... (for writing I thank "sir" google). I think to find the 3M 30NF and the 77 but for the wire it is more difficult without more precise references. I'm looking, I have time available ... Happy end of the year
