As a kid in the 1940s we would walk along the railways looking for those large rail nails, we would lay them on the rail lines and once a train had run over them they were flattened in to perfectly balanced throwing knives, we would also sharpen one side on suitable stones.

The pieces at 1:42 and 9:36 are "riser" (i think this is the word, i'm not a native english speaker) produced during the Aluminothermic welding of rail tracks, which are cut off after cooling. There are many images and videos of the process. George had great findings today!

That view shows the same shape of the items found in the canal. My father told me about the thermite welding process of railroad track when I was a kid, but I've only seen it done in videos, never in person. Thanks for explaining what those are!

@@tomatoisred6966 Bar shot is two cannonballs connected to each other by a bar. The idea is , when shot out of a cannon instead of a single ball shooting at the enemy there is a devastating spinning contraption which can take out a ships mast and rigging. There was also chain shot which was similar only a chain was used instead of a bar .

@Magneticg
@Magneticg Год назад
Hi Sarah we are currently in the process of restoring the lamp so you will get to see it soon. We have found out that the lamp is a railway lamp, it is a vintage signal post lamp. They originally dropped into a lamp housing at the top of a signal post, the light shining through the coloured spectacle to indicate red or green, depending on the position of the signal. It is fitted with a Welch Patent burner, designed to burn for 8 days unattended on a single fill of paraffin. The company that made it we believe is Lamp Manufactures & Railway Supplies Dorking.

9:30 mark is what you call a Thermit Weld , molten metal reservoir . The other part found earlier with a tail forms the other side . It is the left over metal , after the molten metal cools down . The wide part , is the head of the rail and the tubular parts run from the rail foot , up to the head. It is sheared off with a machine while red hot . When cold they are broken away with a sledge hammer and discarded while the top and sides are ground flat . I did this Thermit Welding for 15 years .
@Swaggerlot
@Swaggerlot Год назад
Thermite (UK spelling) is a mix of powdered iron and (usually) aluminium. It is poured into what is best described as a mold around the end of two section of railway rails. When ignited it burns like a massive sparkler and it melts and fills the join between two sections of rail. What you have pulled up is the excess extrusion of the metal mix. Thermite was used extensively in incendiary bombs due to the long burn time and intense heat produced.
@Flea-Flicker

Thermite is a pretty cool process. During war time, it was used to disable abandoned machinery during withdrawal. The "bomb" would be set above the engine of the machinery, ignited, and it would cut through the engine to stop its use. I believe they would cut barrels of big guns as well to prevent the enemy from using them back on yourself. Something Barry Jr had no idea of when leaving ...stan.

They look to me to part of either ornamental railings or perhaps were boot scrapers, like those that were set in concrete by an entrance door. and at 12:41 that is called a "fencing pin" typically used for holding barrier tape, or wire, or in the early days picket fencing, now used a lot for temporary plastic barriers.

Well that was the best 22 minutes I’ve had this year so far. I too thought it was a barbell for weightlifting. You say it was fired from a cannon? I would not want to be in the path of that nor do I want to think what it could do to what ever it hits. That lantern is absolutely brilliant. Cleaned up and restored I bet it could get a hundred pounds or even loads more to a serious collector. Nice finds both of you. Love those fishing lures too. Can’t wait for the next video. ❤your videos.

Hi Stefan the lamp was an incredible find, we are currently in the process of restoring it.

@@Magneticg wow ..8 days burning..thats quite a thing to last 8 days..have you managed to put a date onit ?. Great to see you back. Happy New Year to you all. Some interesting finds today, I'd love to see that Lantern cleaned up. Alternative thought for the Bar Shot... A very similar thing used to be used on manual levers for changing track points on the railways. It was like a counterweight on the lever to help move very heavy sections of points.

Good to hear from you Phil and happy new year to you and your family too! We are currently in the process of restoring the lamp so you will get to see it soon. We found out that the lamp is a vintage railway signal lamp they originally dropped into a lamp housing at the top of a signal post, the light shining through the coloured spectacle to indicate red or green, depending on the position of the signal. It was a nice find! We wasn’t 100% sure about the bar shot as we aren’t experts in that field so we had a marine specialist look at it for us who confirmed it is a bar shot. Thanks for watching 👍

Wow what amazing treasure you found this time🤩, I'm so happy for you guys. That was well worth the wait. Btw, they found an almost identical looking cannon "bar shot" in the wreck of pirate captain Blackbeard's ship -" The Queen Anne's revenge". From what I recall ,bar shot were in use up until ca 1870 in the Royal Navy and other navies , but yours could of course be a lot older than that. Just imagine what tales it might tell, if it could only speak. Btw ,how much does it weigh ? I figure it could possibly be made from 24 pounder cannon balls, but that's just a guess . The 19th century railway lamp is definitely fixer-upper material. Imho, you should, if possible, consider having it professionally restored, since it's definitely highly collectible and valuable. Cheers guys and take care of yourselves 😊. Until next time.

Your mystery item is just a weld slag where they have carried out welding to the track. It gets cut off, ground down so the track goes back to normal. Worked on the rails for 10 years, many a shift with welders 👍 (the 1.50 mark and 10 min mark) Its the same thing. Look up railway welding pots, the cylindrical shapes should be apparent. Its all just metal waste
