I believe the board was 6" width it is the cedar fence pickets some are 5 and 1/2 and some are six inches it's kind of a choice thing you can use regular yellow pine that's 5 and 1/2 The very first one I built was out of yellow pine which is very strong but I was trying to reduce the weight and the expense so I went with the cedar fence pickets because they are much lighter a little bit thinner and way cheaper and they do the same job just remember if you build more than one you will need to use the same so that they match and I think the length of mine was about 53 in not 4 ft if I remember correctly
