In the comics, she goes to the future and raises him; (she's the one who teaches him how to use his telekinesis to control the techno organic virus). So she's closer to a mother than Madeline was.

Val Cooper ! Amy Cooper is the Karen that called the police and pretended to be assaulted by a black birdwatcher, Christian Cooper, when he was just asking her to leash her dog. But I think Christian Cooper worked as an editor for Marvel, so you're not too far off 🤣 On another note, the motivation expressed by the villains, the "we are being left behind by Mother Nature", humans fighting not to be replaced by mutants looks to me like the far right theory of the "Big Replacement".

My theory is that the finale will set up Onslaught as the big bad of next season. Because in the comics, Magneto's worldwide EMP is what convinced Xavier that Magneto needed to be stopped and that's when Magneto ripped Logan's adamantium out and Xavier absorbed Erik's mind into his own. And eventually, Xavier's and Magneto's psychic combination is what created Onslaught
@TimdeVisser86
@TimdeVisser86 4 месяца назад
thank you! I think this is the first time I've heard anyone else suggest it. I personally think this might tie in with Heroes Reborn. Why does the MCU not have mutants? Because Franklin Richards created the MCU to save the Avengers from Onslaught. The FF might be in their own separate universe. This might not happen in this season but it would certainly explain why mutants don't exist in the MCU.

@durchhalter

What you say is true. However, people going to absurd extremes, demanding others to tolerate the intolerable, scream "WHATEVER-PHOBE!" or "WHATEVER-IST!" and will somehow see themselves as victims when those others don't obey, is also true. So where do we go from this situation in which two diametrically opposed things are equally true???
@ConcreteLogicVideo
@ConcreteLogicVideo 4 месяца назад
@@durchhalter What exactly are you considering "intolerable"?
@durchhalter
@durchhalter 4 месяца назад
@@ConcreteLogicVideo That's part of the issue: It's not about what "I" deem tolerable or intolerable. Because the demarcation line between those two is completely subjective, consensus has to be debated and cannot simply be declared. People should be convinced on the basis of factual arguments, not be forced on the basis of opportune opinion ... something many on both ends of the spectrum seem to have forgotten.
@Cap7070
@Cap7070 4 месяца назад
@@durchhalter I'm assuming that you're honestly trying to debate in good faith so I'm gonna try and phrase this in a way that isn't attack you at all but just the argument. There can't really be "going to absurd extremes demanding others to tolerate the intolerable" SPECIFICALLY when it comes to human rights. To not be able to tolerate a person's existence based on race, sex, orientation, disability, "mutation", etc. comes almost solely from ignorance and refusal to learn better comes from the pride of not willing to believe you could and have been the bad guy and the years (decades in some cases) of programming. And the thought of "convincing people on the basis of factual arguments" is a wonderful sentiment, but those who show intolerance often have knowledge of or have been made aware of the facts, but their "beliefs" are stronger than their care of the "truth". And the bigger issue overall isn't the intolerance of a people, but how they express that intolerance. If you're lactose intolerant your body "can't handle milk" so YOU choose to not partake, YOU choose to avoid it because of the feeling it gives you, you don't ridicule those kids eating ice cream, you don't go on an anti-dairy campaign to make sure no one ever eats cheese again, you take a step away from it as an individual and move on with life, maybe go to a professional to see if they can help you with your tolerance. I don't know, I just don't think that intolerance has a place in human rights and so if that is what someone is intolerant about, they are fundamentally and factually wrong, no matter how they "feel". I also think its a little weird that you're example of "absurd extremes" was calling a person a "WHATEVER-PHOBE!" or "WHATEVER-IST!" as if calling a person out on their speech or actions is somehow extreme. If they're intolerant to a race and are called racist.... yeah. Like you said "People should be convinced on the basis of factual arguments" so if factually they said something that aligns with that term and you explain that, it's not an "absurd extreme" in the slightest, its an argument based on evidence they provided. TLDR If someone is intolerant to an issue of human rights, their feelings and opinions on that topic don't matter and calling them out isn't extreme. It's more work to expressively hate than it is to just your own life in a bubble and let other live People *should* be intolerant to harming others, not harming others due to intolerance. Anyways I assume most here in the comments are good people who are aware of social issues cuz this is an x-men '97 reaction lmao so if ya read this far, you're beautiful, you matter, and I happy you're watching this AMAZING show with us :)

@@Cap7070 Thanks for the decency of actually addressing my comments and not attacking. I truly appreciate that, mate! 1) We’re in absolute agreement on “tolerating a person’s existence based on race, sex, orientation, disability, ‘mutation’, etc.” I would even up the “tolerating existence” to “respecting existence”. However, the socio-political discourse is too often (imo) going way beyond that, denying the right of existence and self-expression on the one end, and using one’s own self-expression to infringe on or outright deny the self-expression of others on the other end. A person has the right to expect their existence to be respected, however, they do not have the right to demand others to participate in their self-expression, that would be a privilege that has to be addressed and socially negotiated individually. 2) We’re also in absolute agreement on “those who show intolerance often have knowledge of or have been made aware of the facts, but their ‘beliefs’ are stronger than their care of the ‘truth’ ”. Yet again, this - word for word - goes for the extreme representatives on both(!) ends of the socio-political spectrum. 3) Total agreement again on “the bigger issue overall isn’t the intolerance of a people, but how they express that intolerance …”. No further comment from me on that. 4) “[…] as if calling a person out on their speech or actions is somehow extreme.” Well, it is not - not at all. But there is a significant difference between calling someone out and calling someone names. It is one thing to address someone’s misbehavior and another to use “-isms” and “-phobes” in reaction to any form of criticism. Sometimes the “-isms” and “-phobes” are indeed appropriately used, but more and more often they’re also misused, treated more like passionate yet clumsy insults, not so much destined to make an actual argument then to simply shut the other down. Used in such a way causes their actual meaning to become more and more diluted, devolving them to the point of becoming banal vulgarities. And yes, that is indeed extreme. 5) Total agreement on regarding X-Men ’97 as an AMAZING show, too! 😀

I noticed a lot of people are angry at Dr. Val Cooper for working for Bastion when she’s clearly not. Based on all the context, she is in charge of Bastion, he works for what appears to be the UN and Cooper is there to keep an eye on him, but she’s learning things that are horrifying her. And what’s worse, from that leader meeting, it sounds like some of them don’t care much. And it seems pretty obvious that Bastion has his own agenda and expected Cooper to try to stop him. I worry this is all a part of his plan.

X-men has always been at its best when it speaks to the socio-political conversation, when it's unafraid to say the hard parts out loud. The original show didn't shy away - but the writing in '97 is so tight, this show goes so hard and is so good because of it. To the topic of people buying the mutant bad / sentinel good act, remember Bastion opened by leaking footage of Xavier alive (mutants lie) and a politician "protecting us" from mutants was found brutally murdered... The big fights happen with few or no witnesses and in front of humans they pull the peaceful arrest act. It is very much propaganda not dissimilar to the way we see a lot of, shall we say, outspoken political groups manipulate their followers today Also points to Marvel for that little reminder that the original animation was before the movie companies divided ownership and they used to use anyone and everyone back in the 90s. No idea how parts 2 and 3 of this finale play out, but I'm here for it.

Scott, Jean and Cable going to Bastion's childhood home is very similar to Harry and Hermione gong to Harry's childhood home in Godric's Hollow. One thing I don't get is that the Sentinels are trying to stop mutants so that humans don't evolve, but they are evolving humans anyway by making a future of cyborgs. Sidenote: The fire woman helping to fix the bridge in Cable's flashback is Scott and Jean's daughter, Rachel Summers. Also, the black outfit Jubilee wears in this episode is similar to the one she gets when she becomes a vampire in the comics.

Everyone is surprised to see Val working for Bastion but I can see it. Val was gunning for Magneto since the beginning. She brought him to the UN to be tried but I think that was a ploy for him to be depowered by the X-Cutioner. "We didn't want this" which was true because the bullet was meant for him and not Storm. Then she was concerned about Magneto and Genosha, maybe she didn't want the genocide but she certainly wanted him to be deposed, she knew an attack was incoming because she became concerned about Rogue being part of the council. She knew about the sentinel programme OZT and expected to see new models of sentinels. Tolerance is not only about mutants and humans, but the willingness to forgive, which she did not with Magneto. If she did, things would have been different. "Magneto was right" in this instance because she didn't give him a chance and Bastion was going too far, genocide, collusion with villains, weaponising civilians.
@I.Lostalim
@I.Lostalim 4 месяца назад
It's hard to say how early - but I do believe there is definitely a side of Valerie that was "concerned citizen". I don't know if she was in league with X-cutioner, but I could see her being lured into Bastion's plans with promises of the return of the sentinel programme - which most people only saw as "arrests" of "problem" mutants. It is possible that convinced herself it really was just a "pro-police" version of protecting humanity from the "bad ones". Being at ground zero for Genosha and realising that Bastion's supporters were being mutated without consent into the prime sentinels truly was a wake up call for her to realise she was in over her head. For me, we've seen how easily people can fool themselves after they buy the propaganda and I could be wrong, but that strikes me as a bigger story here.

18:31 I completely agree with you on that. I never really got the premise of "Humanity hates mutants because they're a new species and will make humans go extinct." It just makes no sense at all. a) Mutants are born by humans and can procreate with humans, which means they're not a new species but simply humans with powers ... and sometimes unusual looks. b) Given point a, mutants won't make humans go extinct. Humanity just simply evolves into its next stage. c) What's so bad about realizing that your children or grandchildren will probably be able to fly or move things with their mind etc?

4 months late to comment, but Bastion's plan isn't to show the X-Men as bad. It's to eliminate mutants altogether. It's not to save humanity but skip over humanity and mutants completely, and have the next step of evolution be the human/sentinel hybrids. He didn't manually turn every single one of those people. As Beast was saying, these sentinels can reproduce. So one can assume these other people have been turned some other way.

Yeah, if it wasn't clear Magneto set off a GLOBAL EMP. The Spider-Man and Silver Samurai cameos distract from the fact that it's showing New York and London going dark. That was just to show the whole world. And while that dealt with all the hybrid sentinels Bastion built, we don't see HIM taken out. So now we have two episodes left and two foes of Xavier: Bastion and Magneto. (Edit: Yes, Magneto was right, but he's also turning heel in how many other people would die in a global EMP: Planes, cars, medical systems, etc.) But yes, agreed that the series is doing things reallly well!

I really like the show but everything since Genosha has felt like it’s on fast-forward. In a better world they’d have more episodes to work with cos these writers deserve all the time in the world. Also, the part when Bastian said something about a mutant hitting on someone at a bar and the sentinel sleeper agent being triggered my gay Brain immediately went to Matthew Shepard and felt sick in my stomach. I do wonder if the show will cover the basic humans going apeshit about a government program to convert them into killer robots (most weren’t volunteers from what I could figure)

Nerdy briefly getting into the whole mutants becoming dominant eventually brings up the thing that irks me in this season, everyone keeps calling non-mutants as humans and that mutants are not human. Even the heroes say that. I haven’t watched the original show in twenty years but I distinctly remember master mold explaining he was turning on humans cos his directive is to protect humans from mutants but mutants are humans so, therefore, his purpose is to protect humans from themselves. Like why is it the bloody sentinels get it but none of the main cast!? I am really interested in how the MCU is gonna handle mutants cos them coming so late and the world being cool with superpowers will make any hatred even dumber than it usually is with the “yes I love Spider-Man, Captain America and Thor the god alien but somehow I think you’re unnatural and scare me cos you can make little lights go off with your hands “

17:20 Avengers vs. X-men. Humans vs. Mutants. It's the only thing that makes sense. The sentinels couldn't kill any X-men without making them martyrs, so Bastion's plan was to frame them as the ones who killed all those sleepers. The X-men defend Magneto, the Avengers want to take him out. Alternatively, the X-men defeat Magneto, but that would immediately walk back the idea that he was right. The show's message so far has been that beating the bad mutants will not stop humans from trying to eradicate them. Bastion even says that it doesn't matter if the X-men do save lives: mutants make humans obsolete. Tolerance is extinction. If there is going to be a refutation of Bastion's ideology, it'll need to come from someone like Sunspot's mom, choosing her son over her status. I think there is a clear metaphor here: mutants are the children of humans. It is wild that humans perceive the fact that their children are different as extinction. But that is how homophobia works. It's how conservatism works: if my children are different, that is the end of the world.

Funny things is Wolverine never sliced pretty much anything in the original show but now finally we get some slicing we deserve!

To say at least Gables Les must very cramp. It’s a Porsche small for a regular size man not to mention a guy who is 6 feet eight.

I dont know who the voice actor is for Bastion but he definitely isnt American. Its that same Hugh Laurie/Charlie Cox/Benedict Cumberbatch made up East Coast accent.

7:52 Seeing Baron Zemo like this is hard evidence for this not being connected to the MCU. Avengers or no Avengers.

Magneto is alive, but he not being in the intro means he is no longer part of the team (which you can tell by Wolverine's lines of him starting the war and them needing the Professor now)

Good point, but i hated that line about Magneto starting a war. Genosha was pretty good openeing salvo, specialy once you considered the conspirary on Bastion side. Besides Doom, Zemo, Val Cooper and maybe Madam Hidra, every single pearson on those TVs are a diferent pearson, from a diferent organizating, ranging from criminal sindicates, super villans and world goverments
