Dr. Sarah Wolff, a residency trained low vision optometrist at Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach discusses the benefits of different magnifying eye glasses for people with vision loss.
Handheld magnifier
A handheld magnifying device can be difficult to hold for elderly people for long periods of time. If that is the case, your low vision optometrist may recommend high power reading glasses.
Magnified reading glasses
Magnified reading glasses are a handsfree alternative to handheld magnifying glasses. The difficulty with magnified reading glasses is that it requires the person to hold whatever they are reading or looking at close to their eyes, which can become very tiresome for extended periods.
Telescope glasses
Telescopic glasses can have high magnification and don’t require you to hold the reading material close up. Telescopic reading glasses have two lenses that provide high magnification and these allow you to hold the material farther away.
