As much? Not quite. It's said that part of the reason he did it was to make clear that he did NOT intend -- by the first movie -- to imply that he thought vigilante actions are warranted. Another excellent movie under the theme of vigilantism is Death Wish -- and there, Charles Bronson probably WAS making a statement of approval for vigilantism. He told the press (partially as a joke -- but only partially, lol) that when the movie was suggested to him he thought the person was suggesting the ACTIONS -- "let's go out and shoot robbers" -- and he said he thought it was a great idea. I'd love to see you do a reaction to Death Wish. It's very famous, and it's quite good IMO.

Hal Holbrook (Briggs) had a long and varied career. Best known for his one-man stage show "Mark Twain Tonight." You can see him in a role vaguely similar to this one, in "The Star Chamber" (1983). He's also Deep throat in "All the President's Men," and a suspicious character in "Capricorn One." Albert Popwell (the Pimp) appears in the first four Dirty Harry movies, playing a different character in each one. It's kind of an Easter egg / inside joke thing.

I'm with you on this, Jen: MAGNUM FORCE is my favourite in the series. Its excellent pacing means it somehow feels shorter than the original, in spite of actually being twenty minutes longer. Credit to a good script from John Milius (APOCALYPSE NOW) and Michael Cimino (THE DEER HUNTER), which addresses head on the main criticisms of the original, specifically the charges of Harry being fascist and the movie's implicitly condoning it. Here Eastwood's position is made explicit by having vigilante cops as the villains, and giving Harry the chance to explicitly rebuff them and their views (while still lighting up half a dozen random fools along the way for various offences).

Dirty Harry's revolver is a Smith & Wesson Model 29. It is chambered for the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge. The bullet diameter is 0.429 inches, and the exterior case mouth diameter is 0.456 inches. For some reason, the cartridge is called .44 magnum. The bad motorcycle police officers are armed with Smith & Wesson model 586 revolvers chambered in .357 magnum. Magnum, in this context, is just a marketing word that means 'big.' The .357 magnum cartridge fires a bullet that is 0.357 inches in diameter. I have fired both types of revolver, and have found that I can shoot .357 magnum rounds pretty well. When I have fired .44 magnum rounds, the recoil is enough to knock me back a step if my feet aren't firmly planted under me. At one time, I thought I wanted a .44 magnum revolver, but honestly, .357 is plenty enough power for me.

3:33 Mark! At school, at least one teacher thought that I might grow up to be an astronaut! But not me! Even "Aunt Bea/Bee" in "The Andy Griffith Show" earned her pilot's license! But rather than be resentful, I'm envious! I've ridden in airliners as an infant or toddler without knowing that I did so. But as an adult, I went to airshows and fairs, hoping to ride in at least a helicopter, and I got to ride in "Newschopper 4" next to the pilot, who was seated to the left, so that a young couple could sit together in the back seat! That was at an "Aerospace America" event. Locally, when I was much younger, I got to ride in a civilian version of a helicopter with the bubble cockpit like those in "MASH"! The doors were off! I could see Dad down on the grown being afraid that I would fault out despite the safety belts! My brother was in the back, alone! So he was more scared! 😅

That opening with the gun barrel pointed at the camera was taken from the openings of the TV show Have Gun Will Travel, starring Richard Boone as gun-for-hire Paladin.

13:36 Mark! I see the dog, too! But instead of thinking "coincidental stray dog" as usual, thanks to your reaction upon seeing it, it occurred to me to wonder if it belongs to one of the crew, and he or she, wanted the dog to cameo! 😊

Since 1955, Hal Holbrook had been doing a one-man stage show of "Mark Twain Tonight", reenacting Mark Twain's own lecture performances for a modern audience. I must've seen him over a dozen times, and each time the performance was always a little different as Holbrook had a wealth of material to choose from. Last time I saw him as Twain was about 5 years ago. He died in 2021.

Jen does Magnum Force! Good Sequel! Good Deal ... Made my day! Super Thanks and I hope you enjoyed the violent american cinema of the early 70's! The proper term is not death squad but Star Chamber which is another movie in itself!

Back in the mid 90s, I owned a Ruger Redhawk, chambered in .41 magnum. It was a nice gun and I got pretty good with it. I carry a 9mm S&W now.

Magnum Force is excellent. Love it. I think Dirty Harry is just about my favourite (Don Siegel was a great director) but TBH I go back and forth between it and this one. Both so memorable with great stories and set pieces. And Eastwood on top form. Also, RIP David Soul who passed recently.

That guy playing the rogue cop, David Soul, had a hit in the UK in 1977, with Silver Lady. He was known at the time, for playing Hutch in the popular detective drama Starsky and Hutch.

Very good observation on how people viewed Harry in the original and the second film called then out. Harry does the right things the wrong way but he's still within the law. And he upholds and believes in it even if it's not perfect.

The cop that told Harry that he will never retire (Charlie) is played by the same actor that plays the General in Lethal Weapon 1, Mitchell Ryan. Also, Suzanne Somers, known to have played Chrissy on Three's Company was one of the bikini clad women at that pool shooting.

Office Davis, the blonde cop, was played by David Soul who just passed away in January. He had a long acting career, played heavies mostly but was a great guy & father in real life. One of my fav movies he had a big role in was a true crime movie called In the Line of Duty: The F.B.I. Murders.

I have a story about the scene at 18:47, when Harry comes to arrest the mobsters at their office. When I was 4 in 1973, my mom took me to see a re-release of Cinderella. I had to go pee and went to the restroom by myself. It was the middle of the day, there weren't a lot of customers, and a 4yo could go pee by himself without worry. Ah, the good ol days. After I was done, I went into the wrong theater, and this scene was playing! I sat and watched the whole thing, then left and found the correct theater. My mom wasn't worried.

So glad this got to play. This and The Dead Pool are my favorite Dirty Harrys. The actor who played burned-out cop Charlie McCoy went on to play the leader of the bad guys in Lethal Weapon. For Eastwood getting slightly away from Harry, you may appreciate The Gauntlet.

Harry was never a vigilante, just used the most direct method to resolve a situation, which was usually force. (Harry is mostly lucky that no bystander ever got seriously injured). Sometimes that seems like the best method but in the long term might not be. Briggs and the rookie cops were deciding someone punishment based on evidence that they had no first hand knowledge of, which seems like Harry's main objection. There is a movie called The Star Chamber with Michael Douglas that deal with a similar idea. The Star Chamber in history was an English court set to deal with prominent people that regular courts might hesitate to convict due to their place in society.

When this movie came out, we were graduating from black and white TVs to color TVs and cable channels were brand new to those who could afford them. We got free weekends here and there and one weekend I watched this movie so many times. My favorite one next to the original Dirty Harry.

Tom Hanks said that as Director Clint Eastwood treats his actors like horses. In the old days Directors would shout "ACTION" and spook the horses. Tom said when Clint is in the Directors chair you quietly hear ".... OK when your ready" or sometimes filming has already started! 😂😂😂

This one's my favourite. Two of the 'adsassination Squad' went on to be TV Detectives. Robert Urich went on to be Dan Tanner in Vegas while David Soul was Hutch in Starsky and Hutch. Soul was also in Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot'. Funny you should mention Mission Impossible. Lallo Shiffin also did the Iconic theme for that.
