Micah, it was great to see you all excited like a kid on Christmas morning! So happy you got the opportunity to fly in this helicopter! Thanks for taking all of us along for the ride! 😊
Paradise Helicopters based in Kona has the original 500 from the magnum series and its based at Turtle Bay on Oahu. He also has 4 other 500's. 6 Bell 407's, a Bell 430 and a 429. They all operational. The owners are very cordial people with a great sense of family.
@@beefyoso I was incorrect. This current bird spent 18 years with Honolulu PD before Calvin got it. It was faithfully restored by Pheonix heliparts and spent time in Las Vegas Helicon with manetti and Mosley, the actors from the original magnum series. So, it came from Hawaii, sold to paradise helicopter, ferried across the pacific, restored in Arizona, displayed at Las Vegas Helicon, shown with actors manneti and Mosley and ferried back to Oahu where it flies tourists.
Done hammer heads, some other crazy tricks with an extremely cool pilot before. lol The Hughes 500 is the absolute best little bird I’ve ever been in. Did lots of long lining, lifts way more than a 206 jet ranger. Incredibly manoeuvrable, watched our pilot (who was himself a musterer) whip around carabou better than any cowboy on a horse. From twenty feet off the ground. Absolutely hands down my favourite.
You are certainly deprived if your dream helicopter is the Hughes 500. Thats just one up from the lethal Robinson. I got to fly the Augusta 139 which is the mainstay of air ambulance and search and rescue services worldwide. Its basically crash proof and you have to be in a fixed wing aircraft to get a patient to hospital faster. here in Australia its called the flying footpath, its so stable.
First helicopter I flew in was I think a Robinson? This was 27 years ago! After take off I was second guessing my choice, lol . I would love to fly the Hughes 500, thanks for the nostalgic look back and the memories of a simpler time..
Great review, I did my PPl on R22’s and did a couple of 206 hours. I was a gnats whisker from my first 500D flight but it had an exhaust crack so cancelled 😵. Man I’m well jealous. Thanks again for the video…. Loved Magnum
I was watching your vids for a while now and I am going on my 3rd heli lesson tomorrow. When we takeoff I always see your helicopter. Thanks for such great vids and Thanks for getting me into helicopters!
For those that are curious, these Hughes 500's cost around $500K to $550+ used depending on frame hours. I found the listing for this exact helicopter and it has under 800 hours which is consider very low. Some additional information, a variant of this copter was used during the Vietnam War, the Hughes OH-6 Cayuse. I think the 500 is the civilian version but I am not entirely sure. For military use these were classified as light observation aircraft and for civilian use, light utility. The listing for this particular copter featured in this video - www.controller.com/listings/aircraft/for-sale/190283755/1979-hughes-500d
I remember a video from 15+ years ago showing the original Magnum-PI heli smacking-in. A big Hawaiian guy about picking up the helicopter to get the pilot out. Anyone else seen that?
I remember that! That Hughes 500 had the the most distinctive paint job... And into a drainage/irrigation ditch and that guy lifted the the heli up and they got that guy out.
Yea. If I remember correctly there was a fuel contamination that caused the crash. The big guy had a sudden adrenaline rush that enabled him to push the chopper wreck up a bit so the pilot could be pulled clear, otherwise he would have drowned.
Got to operate a UP locomotive when as a tv reporter I was doing a story about Cops On A Train. I also flew on a CHP Hughes when I was tdy in Sacramento many years ago.
I'm starting to believe that all youtubers have to do ads within their own videos where they themselves are the spokeperson for it, in order for them to make the same type of income that they used to make from their videos in 2018 and before that, before all of them started doing that.
I can verify that my channel isn’t financial sustainable based on RU-vid ad dollars. Supplemental sponsorships like my relationship with Flying Eyes really help out. But even then, this channel is a long way from paying my bills.
Dude.... Thank you so much for some seriously enjoyable entertainment. When I was 22 I started my first job at a company that made visual systems for simulators. On my first day I was introduced to the "hardware lab" which had a raised floor and was quite loud from all the 12U computer racks. Way back in the corner was a 3 x 3 array of 19" monitors and in front of that rack was a raised platform with the top part of a disassembled office chair mounted on top. After I was invited to "take a seat" I noticed foot-pedals forward, a large bar on my left (the collective), and a cyclic control basically in my lap. It was then explained to me that I was going to basically have to "learn to fly rotary wing" in order to test my work (I was hired to build what you saw out the window, so-to-speak) To make a long story even longer :)... After over a week of non-stop crash-and-burns I finally figured it out and I've loved it ever since!! I've always dreamed of flying my own bird. I've ridden in lots and the MD500 or 550s have always been my favorite (ever since Magnum PI, actually!). Thanks again for kindling some very fond memories! Best Wishes.
R.I.P. "T.C." Actor Roger Earl Mosley, best known for his role in the hit show "Magnum P.I.," has died at age 83, according to his family. Mosley played helicopter pilot Theodore "T.C." Calvin in the show, which aired on CBS from 1980 to 1988. He portrayed a former Marine who ran a helicopter and tour service in Hawaii, often flying Tom Selleck's private investigator around the islands to help him solve cases. April 15th, 2016 took an incredible flight out of Honolulu International Airport in Oahu, Hawaii in this 1982 Hughes 500 (369D) N357MH. Note: 50 Min. Tour, I cut some footage out. This Hughes 500 is just like the N556MH Hughes 500 used in the New & Old Magnum PI Television Series.
Brother Micah, you're livin the dream dude. Great video. I was smiling the whole way through. My boys call me T.C. because I'm the only black heli pilot that they know. hahahaaaa. I'd love to fly that MD. It is a SIIIIIIIIICK machine. Back home in Maryland our police dept fly the MD NOTARS . I wonder how different they feel compared to the MD's with the regular tail rotors.
Dude. If the money fairy dropped a few million at my doorstep I'd definitely buy a NOTAR! As for TC, he inspired a couple of generations of pilots, myself included. I can only dream to be as cool as TC.
You do know that some military pilots are absolutely laughing at this video... I didn't see a single segment in this video with any neutral or negative G's... I feel like I just went for a ride with a used car salesman. There really is no comparison between a Jet Ranger and a (now) MD500 + / -... RU-vid = more and more full of tripe.
Some three decades ago, I flew in a Hughes 500 on a wildfire assignment. It was in the Trans Pecos of Texas at Guadalupe Mtns. NP. Of all the helicopters I've flew in, I like the 500 series best. Now, you need to do more auto reviews and get ya one!
Nice demo flight! If any of your peeps want to see the best 500 movie EVER, check out Larry Hagman's Deadly Encounter (on RU-vid) horrible script, suspect acting but the flying is the best. Think 500 vs Allouett (sp?). The pilot died some years later flying a Blue Hawaiian helo VFR into IFR. I'm based in CMA if you want to partner on a 500.
Wish I had one too. Hey, could you do a flyover of the San Fernando valley? San Fernando mission and park? Maybe go over James Monroe high school, and Porter Jr. High/middle school. I grew up there, but have been in Washington state for many many years...would be cool to see that. My dream chopper would be Viet Nam era Heuy. My dream motorcycle is a 1937 flathead 80 Harley, (ULH) and I have one.
Oooohhhhh yyaaaa....i love the Hughes 396c and the 500d. That look of the chopper is awsome with the 396c being the original OH-6 Loach used in Vietnam especially combined with the AH-1 Cobra as a hunter killer team. Now that i am retired from the Marine Corps i am going to buy one, just a matter of time.
if the engine stalls at an altitude of 300-600 feet or below, THIS IS COFFIN. No autorotation of the propeller will play here ... Whereas a light aircraft, if the engine fails, you can simply grind to the EARTH (well, you will break the device and a couple of ribs ...)
First heli I flew in was a State Patrol Hughes 300. It wasn't Schweitzer yet. That was one heck of a ride. Later flew in a couple Robinsons. But give me an MD any day. Nothing else invented by humans sounds like an MD with NOTAR. A beautiful sound.
I've flown in a Robinson r44 & a bell 206 long ranger...i'd like to fly in a hughes 500 & a bell 222..the bell 222 is my dream helicopter to fly in because of the television show "Airwolf"..there were quite a few hughes 500s in that television show as well..i like helicopters myself 👍👍😊😊
In the 70s, I spent several years working in northern Canada & a lot of hours in a variety of helicopters, 204s, 205s, 206s, 212s, 500Cs & Ds. The most fun were the hours in the 500Ds. They could get in & out of places the Bells couldn't even think of.
My day job I ride around in a 407 but I'll admit I have always wanted to hop in one of these. The 5 blade rotor and the sound of these are just awesome and yes Magnum PI inspired me too
Fun ride. Sweet copter. Why were you still listening to the tower why you were crow-hopping along that river? My dream aircraft is a Quest Kodiak and a full summer of exploring the backcountry airports in Idaho using Galen Hanselman’s guidebook.
Love this Video!!,and handling of jet ranger,,I'm kinda fond of,watching this n listening to everything very informative,, love to go up one of these someday, happy flying,,
Never flown a helicopter but from your strut footage there seems to be so much pedal work and your back-and-forth yaw compared to a fixed wing it would seem a little tiresome.
Closest I think I'm ever going to get to that is a 500 in flight sim. And based on your video, I don't think the sim begins to do it justice LOL. Congrats on living your dream though. It looks like a blast.
Definitely not the original Magnum PI helicopter since that one crashed nearly killing the TV series pilot Steve Kux. He was the main pilot in the show who was a small guy who would wear a black face mask to kind of look like TC in the shots from a distance. He was lucky to be alive after he crashed that helicopter in a ditch after the show was over while doing contract work. He was a dang good pilot though.
I know this is old but would like to ask, have you flown the 505 and if so thoughts in comparing them? I know this is your dream but I am curious. Thank you and be safe.
This is one of my favorite helicopters also. I would love to see you fly a bell to 222 airwolf. That above all is my favorite helicopter. Well that and the air crane and the Osprey and that newer Eurocopter X3 that looks like airwolf on steroids.
Nice always liked the 500 thank you for the video hope someone would make some moves with helicopters like 240 Roberts and some Bell 47 to thank you have a good day
Wow if that does not get you inspired to fly helicopters, I don’t know what would. Step one build a business to have the cashflow to enjoy flying. There is not other steps!!!!!!!
I'd like to know who painted the color scheme because they screwed up on the yellow stripe on the "left side" of the chopper. It's crooked and looks like hell. 0:14, 17:08 go here and look at :40 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-npnejVGdqec.html
Really enjoyed watching your incredible flight Micah, this brought back great memories when I flew out of the Honolulu International Airport in Oahu, Hawaii in this 1982 Hughes 500 (369D) N357MH painted like the Magnum Helicopter, took a 50 minute flight with Makani Kai Helicopters. Thanks for the GREAT Footage & I just Subscribed 👍😎
