I do some shooting with the big bore Desert Eagle and go over what I think of the gun in terms of build quality, design, and just general shooting impressions.

Best gun ever made. Don't know what you're talking about. The brass in the face builds character. The weight makes it a fun activity and a workout all in one. The cost of the ammo makes you really think about each shot, which results in better performance. The mirrored finish takes away the need to carry a mirror (2 for 1). And most importantly, per Hollywood movies, you cannot miss when shooting this gun and you won't run out of ammo so long as you are being filmed!

Thx for the review, I don't mind negative reviews. That said, I own 2 DEs- .44 Mag and .50AE. They're amazing guns, look great and tremendous fun to shoot. It will actually shake the ground in the range. I admit it's not the most reliable gun around, it jams every now and then. As you said, it's not a carry gun for many reasons. Recoil isn't that bad for a gun that size, and the .44 mag is very lite (relatively). It has no where near the recoil on the S&W 500 Magnum, particularly the 4" model. BTW, I have never been hit in the head from shells being ejected and I've owned the gun for 3 years and shot 6 - 800 rounds. I agree w/ you, if you've had this on your list for a while, go and buy it- you won't be sorry. Enjoy...

If I could only buy one, would you suggest the 44 or the 50?
@philapop5269
@philapop5269 3 года назад
@@johnwood5674 You need to know yourself to answer that question. I was planning on buying the .44, but I knew that then I REALLY would want the .50 so I bought the .50AE first. I put off buying the .44 Desert Eagle until I saw it one day for $750, now how could I turn that down, so then I had two Desert Eagles. When they came out w/ a brushed stainless version of the L5 last year, I bought it in .44 and now I am planning on buying the .50AE barrel to "upsize" the gun. So do you count that as two .44s and two .50AEs? I took the .50AE to the range last week, and I can still say that shooting that gun is a blast! So buy the .50AE and then pay $500 or $600 for the .44 mag barrel and magazine. Life's too short not to enjoy a .50AE Desert Eagle. Now the only problem you have is- do you buy the Mark XIX or the newer L5??? Yes, life can be challenging :-)

@@johnwood5674 Doesn't matter what caliber you get, .44 mag or .50 AE, because they both have the same rim size. I went the .50 AE route and my dealer included the .44 mag conversion barrel.

I bought a .357 in about 86 as a curio, initially the extractor used to fall off the rim at times, but gentle re-profiling cured this and and then shot 1000's of rounds of 125grn reloads without failure (13.2grn of Bluedot from memory). It was a nice change from .45 acp and .38super. .44 variant wasn't out at the point I purchased.

After shooting about 1000+ rounds out of my 4" 500magnum, I was pleasantly surprised by the much softer recoil from my new Stainless steel Desert Eagle 50AE. Along with much less recoil, light single action trigger, heavier overall weight and 8.5" sight radius, allows for accurate 3" 5-10 round groups at 25 Yards standing unsupported! Although I've attained similar results using my 4" S&W 500 and using "Double Action" it was a much easier task using my Desert Eagle.

My first experience with IWI was a 50AE Desert Eagle. A friend had bought one because he was young and had disposable income. I was impressed with the fit and finish of the weapon, the recoil was nowhere near as bad as I had expected.....but I don't remember being hit in the face with brass. Many years later looking for a weapon to fit my wife's smaller hands, we looked at the Baby Eagle because of the IWI workmanship. She loves her Baby Eagle (9mm). My list of useless toys to buy is too long however to include this monster.......but they are cool and fun to shoot........and count as workout time for lifting weights.

My experience with the Desert Eagle comes almost exclusively from working at a shooting range for nearly four years where we rented handguns for the general public to use. The Desert Eagles that we had for rent were all in .357 and we shot mostly the 125gr Winchester "Winclean" JSPs through them. I am one of the people who was left with the impression that the Desert Eagle is very unreliable, so your comment that unreliability could be very user-dependent is interesting to me, especially since most of the people that I saw shoot this gun were, in fact, total neophytes. That said, we found the Desert Eagle to be a remarkably fragile gun, especially when it's sheer mass is taken into account. This was a public range where I worked and the guns there saw FAR more rounds go through them than the average gun ever would but there was always something going wrong with the Desert Eagle: the safety screw would come loose, allowing the safety to engage under recoil. The gas port on the barrel would erode to the point where the gun wouldn't cycle any more (luckily we had a guy working for us who could weld and whose dad had a welding setup; he was shrinking that gas port diameter whenever he had the chance, probably once a month or more). The recoil guide rods would routinely snap. The magazines would bind up. It seemed like there was more that went wrong than right with the Desert Eagle, which we quickly christened "The Prairie Chicken". From an RSO's perspective, the Prairie Chicken sucked since we not only had to deal with the reliability and durability issues, but we also had to endure the extra-loud and extra-high pressure blast from the muzzle AND the gas ports (we shot the same ammo from 6" Ruger GP100s and S&W 686s without nearly the same amount of noise). The violent ejection that you mentioned also affected us as RSOs and we were constantly dodging the .357 cases that were being flung our way. Maybe the .50 AE works better than the .357 since it's a rimless cartridge but I can't imagine that it actually breaks parts less! That's just a hypothesis though and I haven't even shot a .50 version that I can remember. Also, my experience dates back to 2002-2006 so maybe they've improved them in the past 11 years too? In any case, I'm not planning on ever buying myself a "Prairie Chicken".
@ZeeGerman36
@ZeeGerman36 7 лет назад
Herk North Magnum Research recommends 158 grain .357 Mag for reliable cycling. I would think an eroded gas port would add gas and cycle harder. The port along the barrel probably loaded up with carbon. My gun has been GTG in .50 and .44. Keeping it well lubed helps too.
@herknorth8691
@herknorth8691 7 лет назад
@ZeeGerman36, I think we used the 125gr Winclean because it was cheap. My memory of working at that range is over a decade old but I do recall the gas port needing to be welded (which would make it smaller, right?) and that the gun almost never cycled properly. Maybe I'm remembering it backwards though: perhaps the broken guide rods were from excessive recoil that developed when the gas port opened up and the poor cycling was from closing it up too much? Or maybe Mr. G&G got it right when he said that most shooters don't hold the gun correctly (especially tyros) which induces failures to cycle? In any case, I'm glad you're having better luck with yours than we did at that range where I worked!
@edwardmolinary4890
@edwardmolinary4890 4 года назад
@@ZeeGerman36 Agreed .I think the Herk North is not remembering how shitty the maintenance is on these range rentals . While I have not rented a range gun myself , I've seen many and almost all were poor examples of whatever gun they were simply due to neglected, poor, or no maintenance . I guess these guys are too busy sitting around coming up with cute nicknames for the guns instead of properly maintaining them. Desert Eagles gas operated system requires diligent maintenance and proper shooting technique , both of which were likely in short supply at his range. Gun is built like a tank and is anything but fragile . I've owned one in .41/.44 magnum since 1996 and yes , it has malfunctioned a few times over the 8k to 10k rounds I've put through it , however broken recoil rods , monthly gas port welding ? Sounds like poor maintenance / unfamiliarity with the system or both .

it's probably a combination of both, especially if you're not holding it tight. I own one in .44 Magnum, and the casings often either hit me in the face or the chest (the latter of which will sometimes land one in my shirt pocket), and this is why wearing eye protection is an absolute "MUST"

Gotta luv that gun anyway. I don't bought it because of it's reliability. You know what you get. It's a legend, huge, heavy, powerful and obviously an eye catcher. Love my Deagle, and with the proper handloads, it's pretty reliable thou. But you're right it throws the brass towards you. A friend of mine shot it without eye protection, got a hot brass right on his eye. Had to bring him to hospital. But if you wear proper safety gear, lot of fun to shoot in .50ae with hard loads..love it and won't ever sell it 💪🏼

I always thought the 50 ae was a little too much, I always wanted a 44 mag deagle over 50 ae.
@ZeeGerman36
@ZeeGerman36 7 лет назад
I would say that was an objective review, not negative. I have one in .50AE and a .44 Mag barrel as well. The trigger isn't like a two stage, it is a two stage. The engagement point is adjustable as well. The two stage trigger allows for a light 2nd stage for accuracy. Extractor tuning aside, if you watch slow mo footage, the gun also torques to the left when fired, making the brass come straight back. I had Magnum Research install their muzzle brake on the end of the barrels and it makes a "YUGE" difference. Tames the snap and no brass to the face. The concussion in an indoor range is like being next to a shotgun though lol.

The Green Man I wouldn't be able to say as I'm not a hunter at all. What I will say is that it was a really good time shooting it and with 45-70 prices it should be. I had no complaints about it the gun it really was a work of art, the fit the finish and great trigger. But as it turns out I'm not a revolver guy so I moved on

Mine originally launched them straight into my face. Not sure if it was the way I was holding it or if the gun just needed to get broken in but now I could just about put a 5 gallon bucket about 10' and just to the right and almost all the brass would land in it. I've also got little brass marks on the top of the slide where the shells flip back and make contact. Hasn't been happening as much in the last few boxes of Big Grains. The Underwood hollow points were markedly worse. Haven't shot them in a while since they're about 50% more expensive

mrgunsngear, the brass to the face is because you need lock your elbows when shooting. I know, weird. I had face brass problem too until I changed my shooting style and locked my elbows just for a deagle. though you do look like you're somewhat locking them, hard to tell though.

@GregoryPearsonMusic

Good balanced review - I can't believe the gun throws the spent casings right into the shooters face; is that a design flaw, a function of the power level of the ammo - or what's going on there? Also, you mentioned the possibility of using it for hunting citing 2 inch groups at 25 yards - I would want to see a little more accuracy than this. How could the gun be set up for shooting at say 100 to 200 yds - is there a different type of sight arrangement one could use?
@MrLaz0rz
@MrLaz0rz 4 года назад
if you're wanting to shoot big bore 100-200 yards, you're probably better off with a rifle. if you're talking self-defense at the distance, it seems unreasonable. you can send it to the magnum research factory for different rear sights. the rounds to the face honestly I haven't encountered, maybe its due to slight design variations, mine was made after they were bought by Kahr in 2010 and I think they switched location of manufacture. could be to how we handle the recoil but I doubt it, mine shoots that shit back and to the right; but I'm also right handed, left eye dominant so my stance is a little different than most peoples'.
@GregoryPearsonMusic
@GregoryPearsonMusic 4 года назад
@@MrLaz0rz Since then I talked directly with the manufacturer. They are doing a run of 10 and 1/2 inch barrels which makes a big difference in accuracy and velocity. I am getting the 44 mag.
@MrLaz0rz
@MrLaz0rz 4 года назад
@@GregoryPearsonMusic that's what I have too, if you get the finger hogue grips it makes it a lot nicer to shoot. still gonna get a 50 barrel, maybe with muzzle brake. idk, might WANT an absurd round to kick like a mule. lol

Good review. From what I can see on the slow motion is that the gun is torquing left. That might be why your you are getting hit with ejecting brass. Just a thought
@jamescampbell4334
@jamescampbell4334 2 года назад
Spot on Steve. I used to get hit by the brass due to the gun torquing counterclockwise. Once I started gripping it with the heel area of my right hand applying additional force on the lower area of the right grip, the brass shower stopped. The 50AE DEagle has some unusual dynamics. The heavy bullet going down the barrel twist has so much mass inertia, the gun actually unscrews (rotates counterclockwise) around the projectile. I own a stainless/ported 50AE MK XIX with a 2moa Romeo4S RDS installed on an ADM QD ultralow-mount. Have the VZ G10 grips installed too. Accuracy is insane, 10" steel plates @150 yards benchrested is possible.

great review, very kindly done for a "negative" review. for me, this is one of those guns that i'm glad exists, but i'd never want one. and i think you hit the nail on the head as far as going revolver if you want big bore in a handgun.

Speaking of the 44mag version, it is really fun to shoot. The recoil is manly but without ripping your wrist apart. No problem shooting a bunch in a day or letting less experienced shooters try it. Comparing my Mark VII to my S&W 29-2, the revolver will end up hurting. Actually the felt recoil of the revolver (not the actual recoil, the FELT recoil) is more comparable to the .50AE.

if you don't Flinch I'm sure this thing can make you flinch if not from The Recoil then from the spent case hitting you between the eyes every time. I fired one ten years ago that my friend had that have been accurized in 44 Magnum and it didn't hit me in the face at all and it was extremely accurate. but I agree with you, I don't see the need for the 50 AE

At least for the 357, it's as reliable as any other handgun as long as you don't limp wrist and use ammo that the manual recommends. People get a lot of problems trying to run cheap ammo, which tends to be FMJ. FMJ and exposed lead fouls the gas system and causes cycling issues. Underpowered ammo also has cycling issues. Limp wristing can cause it to short stroke. But those reasons aren't really a gun issue, more of a user error. So pretty much exactly what you said. Edit: I recommend 158 grain semi-jacketed. Also 357 has almost no recoil so it's easy to train not to limp wrist.

The reason the brass sometimes hit on your face/forehead is because the rifling throws the pistol to the left when shooting , so you have to hold it harder which I know isn't easy .
