All the "greatest of all time"s have had a great champion from which they took the title. Muhammad Ali had Sonny Liston. Garry Kasparov had Karpov. It is only fitting that Magnus took it from a great champion. A Carlsen fan can proudly say "and you know how he won his title? He beat Vishy Anand, 5 time champion, and then began his long reign ". Would have been a shame if there was anyone else he had to win the title from, some pretender. It only speaks to Anand's greatness, that he didn't retire and give no one a chance - but lost to the one and only Carlsen. Constantly successfully defending your title, and losing it only to Carlsen - that's something to be honoured for. He remains an outstanding player.

It’s an interesting moment. It’s nice to hear Carlsen honouring his opponent after a match, and because a loss tends to induce feelings of the lower spectrum, it is even better that Vishy honoured this moment with his presence, holding his nerves and handling all as a dignified man. Magnus is not humble, he is just honest, every time. Anand at his peak is beast and Magnus had to do enermous work to beat him. Anand is one of tactical genius while Carlsen is a positional genius like capablanca
