+greg55666 The ironic thing is that most high level chess players almost never say that word, aside from maybe when they're playing casually. Most professional games end in resignation, because the losing side realizes how weak their position is, at least compared to their opponent, and will resign instead of dragging it out to its inevitable end. This just shows what a hack Charlie Rose is. Magnus is considered to be one of the best chess players of all time, and these are best questions Charlie could think of to ask him.

his question didn't literally mean saying the word "checkmate", it was more like what drives you to get to the point where you know you won. how does it feel, etc. English language is limited and sometimes a very deep question can sound dull and stupid on the surface, but your expected to interpret it appropriately if you're a smart and intelligent person.
@Lekter
@Lekter 5 лет назад
@@noel2577 I completely agree. Glad you understood his reasoning behind the way he asked the question. This show was broadcasted in American national tv and it's made so that it appeals to the average Joe who doesn't necessarily know much about the game. I actually found this question better than others. With minds this great it's always a good idea to leave them with a poetic softball question and see what sort of quote you can get out of them, maybe some gold line that will last through time. Also, maybe Magnus does feel something different than us. Maybe he feels a rush, maybe he "feels" (or sees/thinks) differently when moving a piece... Maybe, for example, he has a mental checklist that he goes through. Not a terrible question. The weirder part was at 8:25 for sure. He also asks some weird, demeaning questions, or says some belittling statements, like, "Your world is within these boundaries. This is your world," referring to the chess board, of course. This is so belittling. He's telling Magnus, essentially, "This is all you're good for, a one-trick pony. Just chess."

Did it occur to you that a fair portion of his audience may not know much or anything about the game and so he's asking simple questions geared towards their level of understanding? LOL That reminds me. I'm 1900 rated chess player. Haven't played connect 4 since I was a kid and I don't know any strategy. I played my 11 year cousin who is a little trickster and a bit of an expert. I knew at least two moves deep I was lost because it was a forced sequence so I resigned right then and there. She didn't like that I resigned before she had the chance to place the last chip. But to the point, I agree with you. I hate that chess players don't get the respect they deserve because 99% of people probably don't have the discipline or capacity to break 2000 elo and much less become a GM.

Expert chess players don't even bother to say "check". It's just assumed that the opponent is aware enough of his position when his king is in danger. I'd even go so far as to say that if you said "check" to a grandmaster he/she would feel insulted.
@kingshearer2
@kingshearer2 6 лет назад
Yes, it's obvious, the interviewer doesn't understand the etiquette of the game but you should give him a wide berth since he's obviously never played the game before. He's trying to bring Magnus down to everyone else's level and he certainly succeeded in that - utterly hilarious .
@zimbu_
@zimbu_ 6 лет назад
I liked the fact that he started arguing when corrected. "Well, you say check." Magnus probably thought about explaining how chess matches end, but was worried that the interviewer wouldn't what a king was. Btw I don't think high level players would be offended by the opponent saying "check". The idea that a professional chess player needs to be informed of a mate in one is a bit too silly to insult anyone. Also, some people sometimes feel "suddenly uncomfortable" or "too aware of" remaining silent, so they might not even think the "check" is directed to them.

As someone who has always considered Charlie Rose a highly skilled interviewer, I must say this interview was cringe-worthy throughout. Rose doesn't ask questions; he makes statements and declares things on behalf of Carlsen (e.g. "here's what's interesting to me, your world is within these boundaries. Your world is within here.", "You will stop playing when you cannot play at a high enough level."), and he seems to fawn and laugh excessively, makes corny jokes ("you like to strangle your opponents *exaggerated choking sound/gesture*") and finishes Carlsen's sentences for him. So weird.

This interviewer asks dumb questions. The game and strategies are known. Magnus is just the best at execution more often. I think he was the first to realize that massive computer prep was futile. All the top players are prepared. He just started going for an even position that neither had seen before and that is when the game begins. Some people are just born with the mental process for chess. Morphy, Fisher, Reshevsky, and others just had it. They were strong as children like Magnus but without computers. I am old. I have put in 10 times the hours as Magnus. Still I struggle to keep up with real-time analysis like Peter Svidler who almost instantly spots 2 or 3 relevant lines in any position. And top players can play multiple rapid games blindfolded. I don't have anything like that in my head but I love to push wood.

There's actually a lot to be gained from studying military tactics. Napoleon's battles really do feel a lot like a chess game. This shouldn't be surprising at all, as chess really is a representation of ancient military warfare. That's the reason why knights always flank their opponents, why rooks only move in a straight line, and so on.

@StephenPaulTroup 6 лет назад
Actually I think that is a good question and Magnus thought it might be part of the reason. As someone who has studied Russia and know the language, being Russian means you have a mindset that is significantly different from the west. I'm not saying Russians can all be put in one box, but there is a significant dynamic running through the Russian mindset that would influence Russian players to one degree or another.

@@StephenPaulTroup OR, Magnus was just being polite instead of saying, "dude what a stupid question". Also Russia and Soviet Union are not the same.
@goodluck8618

It's very standard american A4 thinking. Me and my brother are completely different (one enjoys taking risks, the other prefers to act safe) - two extremely different personalities. How come we have so different mindsets within the same family (and obviously having the same cultural background)? There are lots of examples of other different siblings. All people are different, only Russians are more or less all the same, because, you know, that's politically correct to think. That's what they always tell you or imply - by any opportunity (like this one here). I'm sure he would never ask that question if Carlsen was more aggressively attacking guy. That would have been politically incorrect - Western countries never ever attack other countries, they only spread happiness, and create beautiful dreams. Who cares about the reality in the world of dreams? Right.

I think it just starts with curiosity, if you aren't willing to give up on a thought then you will truly begin to understand what your brain is capable of. Magnus wouldn't give up on the thought, and in some way or another he developed the brain capacity and the 'language' in his mind to calculate positions many moves ahead. I highly doubt Magnus would be as good as he is if he just remembered games. You have to think in your mind that most brilliant moves (lines) in chess are created with a strategy that usually has a line and sinker attached to it, so whether it is you or your opponent using one... you have to be able to see at the same level of depth as him and with as many variations as humanly possible to ensure you don't fall victim. Whether you're a beginner or you're this guy...
