I looked at the 365Chess Database and they had their first game in 2001 at "Troll Masters". Magnus then was already at about 2000 rating, according to Wikipedia. And in mid 2000, when he was still 900 he would have been in a different devision, if at all (if the current organisation of the Norwegian Chess Championship resembles the case in year 2000) So, i doubt, that they had this match which this rating difference.
Can you do a video on Yuri Averbakh, his life and best games? It's his 100th birthday today (first GM to reach a century) P.S. Another idea I've thought of and also seen being suggested is Guess The Eval, I'd really like that :D (P.P.S. I'm a fan of both Babbel and The Fabulous, happy to see them sponsor you =) )
Geir Sune has often been a guest commentator for tournaments on Norwegian TV, he seems like a very nice guy, and clearly all his theory work is paying off.
Fun fact, Geir Sune got a GM norm in the tournament he played a couple of weeks after this game. That means he has two GM norms, and only needs one more, and to cross 2500, in order to finally get the GM title. His peak rating was 2493 in May 2022, and while he has dropped a few points since then, I fully expect he'll be able to get both. Impressive to see a 38 year old still improving!
It's quite common to forget how smart Levy really is. Though he may act casual on the outside, one has to acknowledge his mental capacity as he can recall moves from games from weeks, months, even years ago. In contrast, I can't remember what I had for breakfast.
Just the other day, Gata Kamsky (5x US champion and a legend of the game) was saying the first time he met Levy he was incredibly impressed by his opening knowledge
This is the best channel on youtube this guy is so funny and gives amazin chess content an advices in an entertaining way wish you the best Levy you are the best
Levy, video idea: where different high level players struggle and why. You can probably think of better examples than me, but say Hikaru in classical vs blitz or Fabi in blitz vs classical. Maybe Rosen in end games. They’d all crush me but this is just an inkling of an idea
Hikaru was classical no. 2 only a few years ago. If he didn't stream and spent more time preparing then he'd probably be top 10. Fabiano is not weak at blitz and rapid. That's just a myth. Look at his rapid and blitz ratings. Its just that he's regarded as a classical specialist with extensive prep.
@@areebsiddiqui758 Fabi was weak *in comparison*. Obviously he was still one of the best but at the time he was #2 in classical with 2800+ Its why in their WC match magnus drew the last game even with a slightly better position. He was that confident about the faster times Fabi has gotten way stronger at the faster times since that WC match though^
@@areebsiddiqui758 you might be right 🤷♂️ according to old Ben Finegold he doesn’t even make the top 100 lol I’ll take Ben’s opinion over yours for now. I even said Levy could think of better examples, I just think it’s a cool idea, even if my examples aren’t the best
@@Jartran72 which ones? Lol I listed three. Hikaru is a blitz god but some think he’s lackluster at classical (Ben Finegold said this). Fabi is a classical god but it’s not really debatable that he isn’t as good in blitz. Obviously he’s better than both of us together, but the idea is to examine why they excel in one area and are lackluster in others. Rosen is strong in endgames, but he’s a tricky opening and middle game player generally speaking, with endgames not being as sharp.
This is the best one of your videos that ive watched, very informative in many ways, most usefull for me was the pawn structure and middle game analysis. keep it up love from Poland Levy!
As Levy points out it's funny that with this result Magnus lost more ELO than what he gained by winning an entire tournament. I mean, Magnus is the best, but 2900 is gonna be almost impossible xd
@@johnbishop9621 this is just a logical fallacy bc ELO is inherently self correcting--i.e. if his opponents were better the results would be different too. You can't just randomly give Magnus' opponent higher elo rankings, because if they had that much more elo their playing strength would also be that much higher. Obviously it's easier to increase your elo if you're playing people that are close to your elo-- you gain more and lose less vs playing someone 100 points lower but if they're at your level it will also be that much more difficult to regularly defeat them.
I'm always very afraid to make early queen trades like this, because I dont know what to do next. Could you make a video about strategies and tactics in a queenless middlegame?
Heya Levi, just wanted to say that I think this is the best video of yours I've ever seen. Really great energy, excellent narration and great use of drama and it was also very educational. Nice job dude.
Gotham, I got into a terrible car wreck and your videos have been making me feel way better. The wreck was 10 years ago but I just discovered your channel
Levy, you make chess so much more fun and interesting! Thanks and no worries about the ads, keep making great chess videos and please keep the timestamps for the game start if possible. Great work and thank you!!
Me when i do a move Levy: Thats a mistake Magnus doing the exact same move: That was a brilliant move because after c4 h6 b5 the king is trapped and game is over
Hmmmm... So Dubov and Aronian crush the Caro-Kann at the Grand Prix but Magnus goes for a line that draws against a sub 2500 IM. Great hold by Geir but you have to wonder if Magnus underestimated or was just bored. Thanks for the great recap!!
Hi Levy I really appreciate that your are sponsored by this type of app beaucause of everything happened due to the corona virus people mental / mood is pretty low. As a psychologi studient I am glad that you take care of this (sorry for my bad english I 'm french :( )
Video idea: worst moves of Magnus Carlsen. An instructional video about his blunders and / or slight inaccuracies that don't seem bad for the untrained eye, but still lose the game. For example Magnus vs Esipenko, Tata Steel 2018. It can be reassuring that even Magnus makes mistakes, but it also useful and informative. What do you think?
How are you this talented? The way you present your content is so good. It really sucks you in making me want to watch and play chess. You the Magnus of chess content.
Hahahaha you can tell at 12:55 that you have absolutely no idea why that orders wrong 😂 Don’t get me wrong, I don’t either but it’s funny watching you bluff
Levy: ...because I already see 10 million 13 million whatever Doctor Strange reference scenarios, where I lose in every single one of them. Me(as a huge marvel fan): HELL NAW!!! IT'S 14 000 605 ALTERNATE FUTURES WHERE YOU LOSE IN EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM😎
I think I'm the only person who noticed that during the sponsor segment at 1:33 the link ends with "gothamchess2" but in the description it's "gothamchess3"
after playing bullet for 3 hours straight seeing anything that isn't within the opening I play with feels like the most brilliant thing I've ever seen in my life
I actually saw Kb8 and my calculation was like: moving the king to E8 attacks the rook but the rook is guarded by the bishop but it looks ok so it’s definitely it
"Guess" series Guess the Elo Guess the eval Guess the winner Guess the next move "Duo" series (1 move by 1 player, 1 move by another player.. team chess) Levy + sub 1,000 vs 2 1,800-2,2200 rated sub 1,000 + stockfish vs Levy Levy + latest stockfish vs Super GM + Stockfist 1
It depends. Most ELO systems I've seen use a K value of 32 which means they would gain 28 elo, but that's also something that can be adjusted based on certain factors but it's all just a basic formula. To give you a concrete example: I've worked closely with the dev team of an independent video game that uses an elo system to rank players. The baseline for all players is K32 (so 32 elo points won/lost total), but for the first 20 games played we adjusted that to k64 so that you very rapidly climb or fall to get closer to your actual level. Games played by people over 2400 on the other hand drop the K value to 20 so there's not as big of an adjustment either way. You can also implement a system that elo will naturally decay/lower after a certain point of non- activity. Long winded and don't directly answer your specific question, but it should give you an idea of how ELO systems generally function and how it can be adjusted
@@Knightstrikes It can be tough to calculate these things :) basically they use their rating to calculate the expected score, and then multiply that by the score and the "k factor", which is a multiplier that allows younger/lower-rated players to gain rating faster. Magnus and Geir Sune are rated almost 400 ELO apart, which is actually the maximum rating difference FIDE uses for their "odds of a win". If they played 100 games, Magnus is expected to score 92 points. That means the most he can gain is 0.8 ELO for a win. Had Geir Sune won the game, he would have gained 9.2 ELO.
Sometimes I wonder with rare positions if the highest level players miss ideas due to being so used to playing other top of the food chain players and expecting a quick draw. Or maybe they don't expect lower rated players to play extremely high level fundamental games.
You should do a series where you have to play from a losing position. You can title it "Creating Counter-play" or something. In the low elo games, you can just hang a piece for free, and then later maybe a piece for a pawn, then maybe a rook for a knight or bishop. and in the high elo games maybe just get into a bad position but one that still has life in it. You could just make custom games and start the game from the losing position. Anyway, I just think it would be pretty informative and it plainly sounds like good content. (I've commented this 48 times and I'll continue to do so until either Levy responds, or I see the series. Or maybe I'll give up who knows?) (Revision after #34: I'm prolly going to stop soon. I'm 99% sure Levy has seen my comment. And I've learned Daniel Naroditsky has a similar series. It's not quite what I'm asking for. I'd assume Levy would use faster time controls, and 90% of the reason I watch Levy is because of his entertaining personality. But it would make sense if Levy wants to avoid the inevitable annoying "You're just copying Daniel" comments. (Which would be nonsensical.) Also, I keep getting the same comments saying "that's just elo swap." Which it's not. I'm perfectly happy if he never makes the series. I just thought it was a good idea, so I wanted him to know about it, which I believe he does. I'll prolly go to #50 just because. Also, there's no reason to keep giving Levy free comments for the algorithm. He needs to earn my comment. lol)
