Personally I'm not surprised the watch times for these videos are so good, the tournament recaps are my favourite kind of Gotham content. I almost always watch the entire thing. Very entertaining and instructive.
I like the low ELO tourneys as well as the deity level top tier events. I could watch Levy talk about Stockfish playing against another computer and it would _still_ be entertaining.
Levy's putting Magnus's games first recently because he knows the true fans watch till the end either way. As always, Thank you for the great recaps, Levy!
@@kimaboe You’re probably right 😔 But I think he knows that the viewers who really appreciate him and enjoy his content are going to watch either way 😎
I like the others' games usually like Dubov or Giri i find their games wayyy more interesting while i find Magnus' games instructive and rather a model
😁I'm obliged to read that sentence again slowly. How's your morning going? It's 38f here in daytona beach. The coffee is hot, The THC is 22.3% and my ELO is creeping back up past 1100. Good times.
@@sarthakmishra76 Reminds me of a game i had yesterday. 😁 The enemy Bishop was trying to pin my rook to my queen...So I moved that rook...accidentally pinning it to _my other rook_ in a nice diagonal. 😂
He was commentating on chess24 today clarifying that he feels great, even making fun of the whole situation, like that his 2 losses were clearly very symptomatic for covid.
I skipped a few times to the Magnus game, but now that it’s at the beginning of the video, I tend to be hooked for the whole thing. Magnus is my gateway drug to your recaps.
Levy, I was literally sad yesterday that there wasn't a tournament recap, these are awesome and genuinely are some of the better parts of my days recently!
Levy: "Entire country of India, over a billion people, most of them watching Vidit's game" India: "3 of Vidit's cousins and 2 of his neighbors' login to watch chess com's youtube live stream" 😂😂
@@timotejpitak8441 its about the love of the game. He wouldnt end his whole career if he could commentate, you can have more than one profession. Why do sports players become commentators after racking up 100+ million?
@@ItsJacobyay Well, since you wrote 100+ million as commentator, i will conclude that you are in a delusion and discussion with you will be pointless :D
You should do a series where you have to play from a losing position. You can title it "Creating Counter-play" or something. In the low elo games you can just hang a piece for free, and then later maybe a piece for a pawn, then maybe a rook for a knight or bishop. and in the high elo games maybe just get into a bad position but one that still has life in it. You could just make custom games and start the game from the losing position. Anyway I just think it would be pretty informative and it plainly sounds like good content. (I've commented this 30 times and I'll continue to do so until either Levy responds, or I see the series. Or maybe I'll give up who knows?)
There's only so much that can be done. One can clearly see tactics from a winning or losing position. Honestly if you blunder and still win it only means your opponent blundered. So of course the lesson is to never give up but this content isn't as good as you think it'd be.
@@konroh2 Naw I mean ofc if it's +4 and you're black, there's not really much you can do except pray. (At the 1000+ elo level anyway.) Which is why I mentioned that it's losing, but "there is still play" as in its unclear. There are always going to be easily winning positions if someone makes a mistake. But I'm talking about where your rook gets taken by a bishop because you hung a skewer, but them taking you allows you quick development or something, so instead of the opponent being up +2 as one would assume a bishop for rook would be, instead it's like +.80-1.2 still losing for black, but still something to fight for. Obviously this isn't considering the low elo games where you can simply give your queen away for nothing and still win. Those, I envisioned, as simply entertainment. Which would grab the viewer and keep them around long enough to learn something. At the end of the day, I refuse to accept that there is nothing you can do from a losing position except wait and pray. This isn't classical we're talking about. I'm thinking rapid at most, blitz ideally.
I don’t know know any openings more than half a dozen ply for each side so I am forever “Nuzzling” my pieces in pretty ways in the hope of finding a good position 🙃
He pins comments that generates lots of replies, which drives up the algorithms to increase the probability of the video getting recommended. You gotta make the comment extra spicy to get pinned.
I honestly love this format. i am a chess fan, but not a chess ultra mega fan because im not smart enough, i want to see magnus' games like most all people do. when you had his games at the end... i skipped to the end. but, putting them at the beginning, and alluding to the fantastic play of other great players in later games was great. i watched to the end this time. again, I'm not very smart, but this tactic might be a great move. your videos are all around awesome and i like what agadmator and you do. you guys are both fun to watch.
Not resigning the game and putting up a fight is shunned upon, while these obvious matchfixing draws arent looked down upon. I rather see games where it's like +10 but the black side still fighting on instead of agreeing to draw on move 8 for no reason other than blatant matchfixing.
The way Fabiano saw that the a pawn was his biggest strength and just traded everything into a winning endgame was just brutal and beautiful. He's a beast.
In my department 5 were inflected 2 week ago.. all had mild symptoms. With little or no medicine... This wave is like a normal Flu a week rest is enough... All have rejoined after a week... Vaccination has really reduced the severity this time .. Precaution dose is given nowdays after 10 this month..
How about showing the Eval bar during these recaps? Small detail, and I realise for the most part these games are generally even, but I'd still like to see it.
I understand the desire of many to see the Evaluation Bar and Clock Times in the game display; however, I feel these would ultimately distract from the story. It's all about what we see (or think we see) on the board, accompanied by the commentator's sometimes frenzied narration.
Kinda sounds like the whole "offering a draw" tool is under attack. Is it possible to revise the rules of chess where draws are concerned so this doesn't happen as often? It kind of feels like the players are gamifying the draws to their advantage or if they cant do what they want its like an act of defiance.
3 points for a win, 1 for a draw is what EVERYBODY has been suggesting, but there are still very few tournaments which adopt that scheme. Magnus and Rapport would have equal points under this system, and Karjakin would be 9th instead of 6th.
This behaviour is one of the things Fischer used to rail against in his lead-up to the world championship match in 1972. The Soviets would instruct certain of their players to draw or lose against others, so as to manipulate the odds of achieving another glorious victory for Mother Russia. In the two years leading up to the match, Fischer whittled the Soviet contenders down to a handful, then dispatched Taimanov AND Petrosian 6-0, then went on to sharpen the stake to a surgical point by destroying Spassky. Russian chess superiority never recovered (well, yes, there were Karpov and Kasparov, but the Great Socialist Horde had been permanently crippled).
@@davidanderson_surrey_bc And then the years of government-sponsored meds finally caught up to him and dropped him off the deep end into looneyville, we know.
@@jacokyle0160 you keep posting this on every comment, I don't think you understand. I tested positive nearly a week before I developed any symptoms, he has only recently tested positive either last night or this morning
@@manawearblack 1. I posted it on three comments that were identical. 2. Your experience seems bizarre. I thought people test positive around the same time the symptoms set in. Maybe you're right and he'll get sick, but probably not, because Dubov's healthy
If magnus now draws the game against caruana he will have (with the forfait win against dubov) 9 points and he will gain 1 Elo point from this tournament iirc. He has a long way to go until 2900...The grind is gonna be insaaane..
@@murraymckechnie2086 oh shit, so he has to win against caruana to not loose any rating right? Otherwise he wins the tournament without loosing a match but he will still loose elo. Kinda funny
at 23:28, what was wrong with Bishop->b2? Black's Knight could never get over there to defend in time, the Bishop stops the A pawn with B-a3 and threatens B-a3, Bxd5 with impunity, and white has all day to do p-h3, and after that, it looks like Q-b6 is winning, threatening, BxP, then promote the C pawn.
Gotham, you should cover the hippopotamus defense. I was stuck at 800 for over a month, even dropping down to 700 at one point. Then I learned the hippo and pushed to 900 in about a week. It's a very simple opening to learn and hard for the opponent to stop. It can be played on both sides too. I love it
Levy!! I have a new steam idea for you. I keep trying to convince my friends to watch your videos, but they refuse to watch it unless you dress up as Batman and always play with the black pieces. They also thought that your favorite piece should be the black knight. (Haha, get it? Dark knight? Batman?) Also quote things from Batman.
@@jacokyle0160 I dunno, probably the fact that Dubov just tested positive for COVID two weeks into one of the most prestigious chess events in the world, where he's been sitting across the table from many of the world's strongest chess players for hours at a time without a mask on. Probably something like that.
If I recall that right, Dubov's test was negative, but one of his team members got a positive result. They asked him to play in a mask and he abandoned the match. I do not think they would have offered him to play had he tested positive.
Dubov’s initial test was a rapid test. The tournament organizers said to either have a negative result of an accurate test or wear a mask. There wasn’t enough time to take a more accurate test before the game, and that accurate test later on had a positive result
@@rometjoearu184 if the person above is right, they were not sure whether he had covid, but there were suspicions. The safest way is not to interact with other players, which he did. He could have played in mask, but the risk would still be there. How would that be more respectful?
That Giri-Rapport game will decide the tourney, because if they draw - even if Magnus loses to Fabi - Magnus will win with the forfeit by Dubov. If Giri wins Magnus still wins; if Rapport wins then Magnus just has to draw Fabi
12:53 Didn't you get to the Lucena Position? I'm not sure if that position after black giving the rook for the pawn is winning, but that is probably the way to go
I’m from the Netherlands, if he stays asymptomatic he’ll be inside for 7 days since his positive test and then he can go outside again, according to the current regulations. If he develops symptoms he’ll be inside for at least 7 days + the time it takes him to be 24 hours without symptoms. So far in most closed events everybody gets tested every day, I’m not familiar with the chess events, but it’s very likely the at least have to do a selftest daily. So everything will probably be all right :)
I think you understood that wrong (going for some dutch here).
This came with a solution for the corona issue in the turnament:If everyone is infected then nobody can get infected so they should continue playing unless they feel symptoms
Their are other ppl in the playing hall other then the players, their are the arbitors, the camera guys etc, none of whom deserve to be exposed to covid
The deeper stockfish 14 nnue goes beyond depth 30 in the position after 30...Rxa4 in game 1, the more it likes it for white. +1.2 at 31, +1.5 at 32, +2.5 at 33, +3.5 at 34, and eventually +4.3 at 40+
"Everyone (except by guy) was playing without masks." Now I feel like I'm totally not into this "in person" chess at all. No more any intentions of going into this "in person" FIDE thing. Just keep the online gaming because science denial in a such scale simply makes me speechless. And when any player flex their "superior chess capabilities" like it being a signature of intelligence, I will simply mention this episode. Congrats Levy and thank you for not being a GM but for being our favourite chess streamer.
Levy, don't pin the anti-vax comments. I know it's meant to shame them (at least, I hope that's why you pinned it...) but unlike insults, this is just going to serve as a beacon for other anti-vaxxers to spread their rhetoric, and it's also not 100% clear that your pin is not a supportive one
Anti-stupidity would be more precise. There is a difference between tested vaccine that has like 200k cases with side-effects in a span of 70 years...and an untested vaccine that has over 2 million cases in under 2 years that every social media deletes and bans for (oh and yeah, they are official numbers, available to the public...)
