Magnus Walker Part One: 'Has the Porsche sub-culture driven classic 911 prices too high'

I recently spent a morning in Los Angeles with Magnus Walker and filmed our conversation together with a tour of his very special Porsche collection, plus his 20,000 sg ft Arts District warehouse.
This is part one in which we discuss the Porsche sub-culture, particularly modded, restomod and hot rod 911s, and how enthusiasm for them amongst owners on this side of the pond as well as stateside has now pushed air-cooled prices ever higher. I ask Magnus why he thinks the 'old guard' are now more accepting of 'outlaw' cars. Is it no more 'them and us'?
He also tells me, somewhat convincingly, that his passion for collecting Stuttgart's finest has never been about the money. So, what IS his motivation?
And we take a look at his daily driver. A choice that may surprise you.
The biggest surprise in this episode though? Magnus says he would NOT want to buy that 930 Turbo from the 1977 London Motor Show that originally inspired his love of the marque. But why?
Part two follows soon. In future episodes we chat about his opinion on Singer, his collaborations with Nike, Pininfarina and Hot Wheels and I probe his business career and ask him 'Are you compelling proof that there really is such a thing as the American dream?'.
Russell

Magnus - talking total sense. The less you say when interviewing him, the more he talks, and the more open the questions are, the more he’ll reveal. Started rather choppy but got some great detail from him, just let him flow - fascinating guy. Good interview - thank you for posting.

Yeah, the interviewer is obviously passionate about the subject, and aren’t we all, but yes. Please let him speak ;-). Not everyone speaks in sound bites. You need to give some people room breath.

@@nickmills8476We wanted a different conversation with Magnus to the norm, to probe different subjects and his more inner thoughts on values, culture, inspiration etc. Hence Russell led the questions at the beginning of the chat to steer things towards answers that we think are unique to our channel. Magnus has rarely talked money, whether the original 930 is on his aspirational list or whether sub-culture drives values. We achieved what we set out to - a casual discussion (not a formal interview) with a different context and different answers.

That 991 Turbo is cool. What a beast that thing. Almost 200,000 miles in LA. Respect.

I’m wondering when Magnus will get into Caymans. Plenty of value coupled with a great driving experience there.

My late father was a lot like Magnus. He was a racing driver, but he couldn’t afford cup cars or a nice pay to drive seat on a team. So ever since the end of the 80’s until the early 2000’s he would buy wrecked or abandoned 911’s and build them into race cars in his garage. Two highlights were a 74 S that he bought for $5,000 and built into a 73’ RS replica. The other was a 1995 993 that he built from two wrecked 993’ for about $15,000 (in the late 90’s). His 993 race car sold in his estate for $50,000 just a few years ago (with no title and not legal for the road).

Great video....share much of Magnus's philosophy and also a Pcar enthusiast for like 40+ years. Now have a 997.2 TS (50K mi) as a daily and a '87 3.2C Targa "for fun". Would like to have a 356 in near future but have to agree with MW that anything under 150hp is a bit like driving a beefy Volkswagen beetle.

Did you ask Magnus how he entered the US and managed to stay? I see your FB page says you entertained Reform, so clearly immigration is something that concerns you?

Yes. It’s all discussed in a forthcoming video. The key word is ‘alien’

@@Porschenomicsif you know, you know...but I'm guessing the vibe of form over substance and marketing bullshit, mixed with a big dollop of self-promotion is just a bit aggravating for some people, perhaps? Objectively, old Porsches used to be a fairly niche hobby until it went mainstream (with prices to match)...perhaps due in significant part to a certain video of self-promotion coupled with the effects of social media? There was visible prickling at "the narrative" which was pretty funny ~10.00 🙄😅

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Marketing hype is 90% of social media. He’s just good at it and that skill served him well in the clothing business and in cars. He has crafted a unique identity and brand that has accumulated a large amount of equity. So, he’s attracted an audience and maintained a high level of success for a long time - that my friend is very difficult to do - requiring talent and hard work.

@@refuztosay9454 sounds like proof of my point. Marketing and self promotion, personified. Why would someone work so hard to promote themselves like that? Complete anathema.

Stop calling them G-Bodies! That's a GM family car. The G-Series refers to the 74 cars only. Every subsequent year is another letter.
