Magpie grooming elk with tick-damaged fur.

This video shows an example of mutualism between elk and magpies. I have only ever observed this behaviour in mid-February to mid/late March, so presumably the magpies are consuming winter ticks (Dermacentor albipictus) that engorge on mammal hosts at this time. Elk are habitual groomers and so don't suffer the tick damage that moose do, but the thick hair on the back of an elk's neck is difficult/impossible for them to groom as they do the rest of their body. Thus, the benefits of letting a bird land and eat the ticks out of the elk's neck fur are clear, as are the benefits to the magpie: free food!

I see a lot of people being really annoying about the collar on the elk without knowing how or what it's used for. "Why is it so tight? If we can implant our dogs and cats, why can't they do that to the elk, it's so stupid! " The collar isn't going to hurt or impede the animal. It SHOULD NOT be loose because if it were, it would be very easy for it to get snagged on trees or if the animal got attacked by predators, they could grab onto it. It would defeat the purpose of the collar. The collars are there not to only "satisfy human curiosity," they are present to help preserve and conserve wildlife populations. The collars can be programmed to check vitals of the animal, including how much energy they are expending, what's going on, and where it is travelling (specific routes, not pinpoints on a map at intervals). If it's on a female, it can tell if the female's doing something strenuous on say, having a baby. This allows scientists to find it and tag the baby and potentially check on it so that can be tracked. This lets them get a good idea of how well the population is doing. If they do this for ten females and their offspring and half die, then they should be alarmed and look into it. They can determine how easy it is for the animals to find food and mates from the data. They can track their migration routes or areas they congregate. They can use this data to protect areas the animals need or use or if the animal is one that is meant to be culled back, where it is appropriate to hunt. This can help them manage both prey and predator populations based on this. Heads up, chipping your dog or cat costs around $50 USD and it is a one-time fee that ONLY holds the owner information. It is not a GPS tracking device. It does not need to be maintained. It does not tell you the health of the animal. These collars cost anywhere from $800 USD to $2000 USD depending on how much information it can collect and does all this and more.

Awwww what nice friends! I love to see these symbiotic relationships in land animals. I know it's super common with marine life and is actually found everywhere on a small scale, what with us humans' relationship with "good" bacteria and even our cells' intertwining with mitochondria. But there's something so sweet between mammals and birds, many of them seems to really enjoy each others' company and seek each other out. Look how calm and submissive that nice elk is, it can't be comfortable but it understands it's for the best and doesn't take out it's pain upon his bird buddy. And it seems the bird is careful as well, not just to avoid angering the elk but also in a way that, at least to me, conveys some type of empathy. So cool. Thanks for the video!

My favorite symbiotic relationship is between tarantulas and frogs. Tarantula hideouts contain tiny insect infestations, which the frog is welcome to, and the frog gets to live in a safe space under the protection of the mighty arachnid. But we shouldn't ascribe human characteristics to these relationships, like empathy. It comes down to pure survival for both parties. The beneficial partnership is a great big bonus for them.

Ticks can make an animal sick and weak but once the problem is removed they will gain their strength back. Cycle of life. I'm not a DVM but this is what my vet explained to me. One of God's creatures created to help another one. We found a dog long time ago that was infected with about ,75-90 ticks. My mother was an RN and she removed them with tweezers. It was so weak that we had to force it to drink water. We bathed him in Dawn dish detergent and in about 12 hours, he was up and running just like a puppy.

@@ariadne0w1 Oh no! It is not good for the elk with that radiation and a collar constantly around his neck. Instad they could do something real for the elks that would really help them; like to improve the forests with more fruits and nut trees. To have some more forestiers working in forests to keep them well maintained and make some wells for animals. No, they just want to track them with things stuck on their bodies; even birds get it. I saw a video with two birds stuck to each other because of it and the ones who filmed them did not understand what it was and finally just left them there. They probably died, stuck together.
