During the anti-Soviet uprising in 1956, revolutionaries cut out the Hammer and Sickle emblem and used the resulting tricolour with a hole in the middle as the symbol of the revolution. thank you brother for mentioning this! @@plasmaplasmajohndoe5012 I saw the same thing in Romania in 1989; the Romanians rose up against Ceausescu and were displaying Romanian flags with the communist symbol cut out of the middle.

It is so strange seeing those flags w/ the holes in them, of course, we all understand the historical context for why this became a symbol in Eastern/Central Europe.
