Today, Craig and Celeste taste a Maha Chanok mango from our backyard.
We will be tasting both mangos grown at our own farm on the west coast of Florida and from other Florida farms (mainly on the east coast). Mangos taste different when grown in different conditions and when picked at different times/ripened differently. Our opinions of a particular mango are just that - opinions on one specific mango, off of a specific tree, growing in a a specific location. We are not evaluating a variety in general and by no means intend to offend anyone by our less than stellar review of what might be your favorite mango.
Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

I totally love Maha Chanok, ( as you can tell by my thumbnail picture ) some people detect a carrot taste to them, I guess every persons palate is different, it's that same thing you see with Carrie, to some people it is their favorite variety, to others they cannot stand it. Maha Chanok, has some interesting heritage, which kind of explains its unique mix of flavors. although MC is a Thai mango, it is a hybrid of a local variety named Nang Klanwan, and a Florida variety, named Sunset, here is where it gets interesting, Sunset, is a hybrid, of Haden, and an Indian mango named Amini. Craig's description of party in your mouth, is how I would describe it. you can detect all those flavors, Indian, American, Thai, all mixed in there. not a boring mango. would I recommend it as an only tree? no. but if you have room for a few trees, I would definitely recommend it.

What other varieties would you guys recommend? I have a Glenn, Ice Cream, Nam Doc Mai, Coconut Cream, Alphonso & Ataulfo (The Ataulfo i set from seed.)

Maybe PPK ( Lemon Meringue ) or one of the new Zill creations, if you have a chance this season try and buy some of these mangoes from nurseries that sell fruit, or back yard sellers, best to try before you buy a tree, as you never know which ones you will like the best. of course if you have a lot of room, by a dozen more, lol. never to many varieties IMO.

Nice vid. I have a tree that is bearing well now in Tampa (2nd year bearing more than a few mangoes, 30+ this season, tree about 10ft tall x 10ft wide, about 7 years since I planted it, so maybe 8 years old in total). I'd say yours in this video is very ripe , maybe overripe, as the flesh around the seed has developed a macerated appearance. With ripeness, I think the complex vanilla/floral bouquet aromas come out more, but they lose any hint of tartness, which doesn't taste right to me for a mango. (Perhaps the spicy and carrot aromas develop when overripe.) I think the perfect time to eat is just before they develop that macerated appearance, when there is still a faint green blush to the skin and they mangoes are just starting to soften up but are still moderately firm. I think they are plenty sweet and comparable to Ataulfo at this stage.

I think its sold in Malaysia sometimes, called rainbow mango, sometimes its really good but its not that consistent. Dependent on many variables i guess like age, ripeness, whether it had been ripened much artificially.

Thanks. I have 3 MC’s and 1 of them will be ready to Fruit next summer. I never tasted one and your wife and your honest on the spot impressions were pretty scary for me. I’m not a Carie person a la Spicy kind of guy. I like simple like PPK Glen B Marvel etc. as soon as I can get my hands on mine and your favorite the Sugarloaf I’ll probably pull my MC’s and use those spaces for Sugarloafs. Mr Zill cut one open for me to taste and my eyes popped out of my head and my blood pressure exploded. It only happened one other time. That was when the office secretary cut open a P Pleasure for me to taste.

Yusuf Amawi Everything I covered died - a little caimito , a little mangosteen, and an olosapo. One Jackfruit and the tips of the ice cream mango had leaf damage, and we lost some banana fruit. I think everything else did fine. Celeste

Thank you for doing this taste test. I love unique fruits! You've proven that the Maha Chanok is certainly that, in terms of tastes and appearance. So....if I were only allowed to plant two mango trees, MC will be one and the second one will probably be PPK.....or maybe Piña Colada....or maybe Coconut Cream....or maybe Orange Sherbet.....or maybe Ceci Love.....or maybe Pickering.......or.......HELP......please!!! ;-)

MC to me is another overrated mango that won't appeal to everyone. The carrot taste for me was prominent..not as bad as Angie, but not good. It is DEFINITELY a mango people need to taste first before planting a tree. They are an attractive and photogenic mango. MC isn't for everyone. Some may like it, I personally don't, but YMMV. Both myself and another person I shared MC last year rated it about a 6. Another good video. 👍👍👍

Steve M I agree - this was the best tasting of all of ours this season. Flavor doesn’t seem as consistent as many other mangos.
