Dr J. Robert Bradley was asked by Kings Parents to sing there sons last reqeust but the day of the funeral no one could hold a note but sick Mahalia Jackson it's amzaing how much power she put into this song. precious lord
Mahalia almost broke down during the singing of this. A few years previously, Dr King asked Mahalia to sing for his funeral...he knew his time was drawing to an end.
After I watched this for only a few seconds I was sobbing uncontrollably, a ton of memories hit me all at once. I thought about how this young man was shot dead in cold blood for no apparent reason and how Mahalia was literally trying to keep it together crying out unto the most high in this video, pouring out her emotions and frustrations, and disappointments , and still trying to keep her composure as the whole world stood in awe of this amazing woman , i was just a young five year old girl when all this occurred i do recall my beloved mother crying and weeping and suddenly I began crying and weeping and sobbing i could go on and on about this but I guess I better stop here enjoy your day and have a peaceful night
@@keepingitrealandtruthful.5081 what exactly are you speak on ? Furthermore why did you feel the need to tell me something. So lets get something straight Mahalia Jackson was from new Orleans. All my people are from either from there or Baton rouge Louisiana . I'm related to Mahalia by my grandmother's side . So there's o claims that need to be made if she actually apart my family. What you need to do is find something better to do then try to tell me shit that you have know I idea about🙃
Dunno if you guys cares but if you guys are stoned like me atm then you can watch all the new series on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my gf for the last few days :)
THIS RIGHT HERE IS WHY SHE IS THE QUEEN OF GOSPEL MUSIC.... SHE WAS SICK, AND SANG THIS SONG FOR DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. FUNERAL.... OH WHAT A QUEEN...
Mlk jr and Mahalia Jackson were great friends who truly loved one another - : Mahalia would often accompany him to his rallies. It was during one of those rallies where she heard him talk abt a dream he had abt black and white children playing together. Later that same year, she was standing over to the side of MLK at the march on Washington while he was speaking from a prepared speech. Toward the end of the speech he hesitated a little and that's when Mahalia yelled over to him saying, " tell them about your dream Martin, tell them abt your dream". At that point, he glanced over in her direction, placed his prepared notes to one side and began improvising the I Have a Dream portion of his speech. There's an interesting article by Emily Crockett abt this magical moment entitled " The woman who inspired MLK jr.'s I Have a Dream speech.
This is still soooo sad and even today makes me cry - I will never understand how people can act so senseless and brutal towards each other - he was such a great man! May God bless his soul!
@@devoyhenry3282 There is no one that can give you the feeling that Mahalia gives when she's rejoicing for the lord. She's the QUEEN of Gospel for a reason.
most people didn't know about the two funerals..but my great grand mother informed me. I was 10 yrs old when Dr. King Jr was taken from us...I've followed in his path..fighting for Civil Rights...he was 1 of my mentors...my mom was first along with God.
Wow...I'm at a loss for words. Just looking at her and listening to her, it's obvious that she was in another zone completely. She deeply loved Dr. King, and never fully got over this tragic loss. But the power of her voice and how it resonated over that crowd, is just amazing. She is indeed the greatest Gospel Singer of ALL time. If you have more, then please post it. A lot of people aren't aware that such an amazing lady existed...we need to fix that. God Bless you!
Joseph T. Howard wow, that was well said and very true. This clip brought tears to my eyes and my heart overwhelmed. Im an 80's baby and I grow up with learning about her and Dr. King from my parents, NOT THE SCHOOL system. Their was powerful! She took was a great gift. Our people should know more about great legends.
I was working in a hospital in Holland one Christmas day in the '60's. The snow was falling outside as Mahalia was played loud over the wards, singing...Silent Night. The memory still evokes emotion in me.
I remember when I was 13 watching Mahalia Jackson on our black and white tv sing at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s funeral. I've been touched by Mahalia Jackson's singing (my gospel favorite then Aretha) since I was a child.
im 1 minute and 20 seconds Mahalia just took my whole day to another level !! ... I love this woman !! .. God knows i do !! ... The voice seems very clear here ... even seems to bit a bit higher than usual ... I absolutely love that note at :11 -:15 !! Sing it Mahalia !!
😱🙌🏽😱Dear Ms. Halie: I was asked to sing in my former college’s production tomorrow. They didn’t say it was a play or anything they just asked me to sing Precious Lord. Here I am at the sound check & they say, “they’ll call you up during the funeral scene.” I prepare as if Nykole was going to sing then the actress says, “...singing Dr. Kings’s favorite hymn Precious Lord, Sis. MAHALIA JACKSON,” I instantly had to get my emotions together because this will be my 5th time having the honor of portraying you. Learning about you has been sooo great and I honestly wish I could have met you💜💜💜
This will never get old. Mahalia Jackson song just like she song in the inmatation of life movie. She bought me to tears. There's nobody like her in gospel, she didn't change up for nobody. One of the greatest & favorite singers of all times.
Thank you so much for posting this! An historical recording of Mahalia, full of tears and sorrow..."Precious Lord" seems to have been one of the favorite songs of Dr. King....
Mahalia was blessed by God. She followed her direction in life! That brought her an increable wealth..yet $ was not her priority. Singing for America was her love for one another. We sure need it Now!
Not to mention she loved Dr. King like a baby brother, or almost like a son (she was 18 years his senior). It is commonly said that Precious Lord was MLK's favorite song and legend has it that he asked Mahalia, his friend and favorite singer to sing it if he should pass on before she does, at his funeral. So she granted his request. Bless her heart.
@blessedover: Yes, she did sing it twice. I think it was on different days though. The one she sung at the church she was wearing black, with a black and white hat (many of us have seen the picture online). Mahalia only did one verse. As soon as she sings the 2 words, "Precious Lord," you can hear a lady scream in the audience. I think this was the second day, before he was entombed.
250,000 people came out to pay their respect for a soul who brought the gospel of Jesus Christ all around the world and just look at the mother of Gospel trying to hold on and be strong crying out onto the most high god I am almost certain it was most definitely hard to bear the loss of this great man
Just look at the outpouring of support I never, ever in all my life seen so many black people together in unity in a peaceful setting . I am sure this was truly challenging and truly difficult for Miss Jackson too bear she was very close to Dr King according to what I read about their relationship and documentaries I witnessed with my own eyes on television their bond was unbreakable but death came knocking and Dr King answered I was just a little girl back then I remembered seeing my mom broken from the tears and I recall balling and crying my little eyes out with my little five year old self me and my beloved Momma weeping and moaning just like Mary and Martha. I didn't know any better I was just hugging my Momma crying and weeping. but god knows I truly didn't understand what was truly happening but by his grace and tender mercy Jesus knows I know right now lord have mercy Jesus take my hand.
I just grabbed her worlds greatest gospel singer album at the salvation army last weekend. I had never seen it anywhere except on BET in the last 30 YEARS.
