When Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) was a young man, studying law in England, he told a friend that he must try Indian coconut sweet balls (laddus). As Gandhi aged and his dietary disciple increased he turned away from sweet or salty foods and held firm to his vegetarian convictions. His wheat berry porridge was one of his favourite breakfasts. More than anyone else in history, Gandhi's diet reflected his belief system.
