As complex as a Persian carpet and as rough as a hemp sack. Song as frangible as a cobweb, told in mayfly seconds. The timing’s off, the timing’s on. The tuning’s theirs. Harmonics held in check, then folded forward, broken open in teetering arrangements of trumpet, saxophone, euphonium, organ haze, stalking bass, ecstatic guitar, crumbs or crescendos of piano, the ticks of a trap set - in marches and miniatures, ballads and blow outs, primitive folk filigree and pretty pop patterns. An affecting, affectless voice in Tori Kudo, plain, direct; a bare, barely-there whisper in Reiko Kudo, high, unattached. I have examined them live many times, close-up in tiny spaces, and their distance and mystery prevail like a Jōmon pot behind museum glass. In this world but not entirely of it.
It's nice to hear a bit of Bill Wells playing with MHSB. Their CD Gok is well worth a listen although it is only about 35 minutes long. However, the track Banned Announcements is currently being used on a Sharwoods advert on UK television. Tori seems an interesting and likeable chap, thanks for posting.
Someone could tell me which guitar model he is playing from 11m40 to 12m35s on the stairs ? :) thanks for posting this wonderful short documentary :) Love it !
